The cool, watery moonlight outside the window moved quietly until it disappeared, and a ray of morning light took its place, shining on the window frame.
Liuli's eyelashes fluttered, her eyes slowly opened, and she sighed languidly. She lay motionless on the bed, blinked for a while, and then slowly sat up.
Liuli sat on the edge of the bed and yawned widely. She put on her shoes, stood up, stretched, and walked to the round table with her eyes half-closed, intending to pour herself a glass of water to moisten her mouth. Then she saw a letter on the table.
The drowsiness in her eyes vanished instantly, her eyes widened, and her expression changed.
The envelope had a neatly written line that read "To be opened by Liuli".
Liuli recognized the handwriting. Many years ago, she had seen Shichan copy Buddhist scriptures, and he wrote in the same handwriting. Even after so many years, she still remembered it.
Because of this, she realized something, and a hint of tension and fear quietly appeared on her little face.
At this moment, who could know how afraid she was that her suspicions would come true?
Liuli's hand was still outstretched forward, but she didn't look at the teapot and teacup in front of her. Instead, she turned her head to look at the letter on the corner of the table, her eyes filled with fear, as if she had seen some kind of ferocious demon.
"No, no..."
She murmured to herself, silently praying to Heaven and all the gods and Buddhas. This letter was not a farewell letter from Shi Chan; it was merely a love letter Shi Chan had written to her on a whim…
She even thought that as long as the letter wasn't a farewell letter from Shi Chan, she would be willing to pay any price.
Liuli stared at the letter with fear for a long time before finally reaching out with her right hand. Her fingertips trembled so much that she could barely hold the letter.
She took a deep breath, opened the seal, and took out a folded piece of Xuan paper.
Liuli unconsciously opened the envelope, which quietly fell to the ground. With trembling hands, she unfolded the Xuan paper, and the words that came into view shattered the pitiful glimmer of hope in her heart, casting a shadow of despair over her eyes.
The first line on this Xuan paper contains only four characters: "Liuli, I'm sorry."
Liuli's hands trembled so violently that she could barely see the words on the Xuan paper. Coupled with the tears that blurred her vision, she could no longer make out the neat little characters.
Liuli held the Xuan paper in her left hand and wiped away the tears welling up in her eyes haphazardly with her right hand. She tried to steady her left hand so that she could continue reading.
“Liuli, I have been a disciple of Bodhi Temple since childhood, and I have been practicing diligently. My purpose is not to ascend to the Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss or to achieve immortality, but to help all suffering beings in the world escape the sea of suffering and be free from any calamities.”
“Liuli, I think you can understand me. You know my grand ambition, you know my wish, and you must also know how uneasy I would feel if I ignored the demonic calamity outside and allowed the demons to harm the righteous disciples and the common people.”
"Liuli, I only ask that you grant me one year. I will definitely return after one year. No matter how things develop outside, or whether we can overcome the demonic calamity, I will come back."
"When I return, I hope you will marry me, okay?"
Tears streamed down her cheeks, dripping onto the rice paper and blurring the delicate characters on it. As Liuli opened her left hand and the rice paper floated down, her body slid down limply and collapsed onto the table.
