Even so, Chen Xiong still waved to him.
Meng Zhili quickly stepped forward and extended his hand. Chen Xiong's slightly wrinkled hand rested on his wrist, paused, and his expression turned serious.
"Your family must have spent a lot of money to get this young man to this age, right? He's got a very precious life."
"We spent a lot of money in the early years," Meng Zhili replied respectfully, looking somewhat reserved.
Withdrawing his hand, Chen Xiong called out, "Xiao Liu."
A short while later, a boy of about fourteen or fifteen years old ran out from the inner room.
"Master, what do you need now? I'm telling you, you can't eat anymore, or that little devil Tang Wan will beat me up again when she finds out I bought you snacks..."
As Chen Liu was speaking, he was caught off guard and met Meng Wan's ambiguous smile. Chen Liu swallowed hard and stiffly turned around.
With his shoulder held down, Chen Liu, his back to Tang Wan, looked like he was about to cry. He turned around slowly, his face now displaying a fawning expression.
"Ah, who is so beautiful that I can't take my eyes off them? It's my peerless fairy, Miss Tang Wan, who is so beautiful that fish sink and geese fall from the sky and the moon hides its face in shame."
The conversation changed so quickly that Meng Zhili suppressed a smile, while Meng Wan was speechless and reached out to pinch his earlobe.
"Ahhh, I was wrong, Sister Wanwan, I was wrong, I was wrong!" Chen Liu howled, making it seem as if Meng Wan had done something inhumane to him.
In reality, Meng Wan didn't exert any force at all...
"Alright, I'll go deaf if you keep yelling." Meng Wan patted his head. "I won't settle the score with you about the snacks for now."
Upon hearing this, Chen Liu, who had been covering his head and pretending to be aggrieved, immediately put on a smile.
Chen Xiong ignored the two's playful banter, acting as if it were commonplace. He beckoned, and Chen Liu immediately straightened up, walked to his side, and bowed slightly in greeting.
"Xiao Liu, go and prepare the things."
"Yes." Chen Liu, who had been grinning, immediately became serious and went to do his job without delay.
Chen Xiong was about to get up when Meng Wan immediately stepped forward to help him. Playing and joking are fine, but proper etiquette and respect are absolutely essential.
Meng Zhili saw everything, then lowered his eyes, a hint of disappointment flashing in them as if he were thinking of someone.
"Second Brother." Meng Wan helped Chen Xiong into the room, but when she turned around, she found that Meng Zhili was still standing there.
Coming to her senses, Meng Zhili composed herself, smiled at her, and followed her.
After passing through the rooms and arriving at the courtyard, Chen Liu was already waiting at the door of one of the rooms. Upon seeing Chen Xiong, he took Meng Wan's place and helped him into the inner room.
A faint medicinal scent filled the room; it wasn't bitter at all, but rather soothing and comforting. Meng Zhili liked the smell very much; his nose twitched slightly, as if he were deep in thought.
Meng Wan glanced at him, but didn't say anything.
"Sit down, put your hand on my arm."
Chen Xiong's tone was completely different from before. Meng Wan and Chen Liu also stopped fooling around, each standing to one side, behaving properly and without any presumption.
The room was quiet, with only a faint fragrance in the air. Chen Xiong asked several questions, which Meng Zhili answered one by one. Sometimes, she would suddenly ask Chen Liu a question, and if Chen Liu couldn't answer, Meng Wan would answer it.
The atmosphere inexplicably became somewhat serious, and Chen Liu's expression gradually became uneasy. In contrast, Meng Wan remained calm and composed, sometimes even raising her eyebrows at Chen Liu with a provocative air.
Meng Zhili saw their subtle actions but only smiled slightly and remained silent.
"Sixth grade."
"Eh?" Chen Liu was called upon, feeling flustered, thinking there would be another question.
"Look at you, so pathetic. Learn from your sister Tang Wan. She was half a year younger than you and could answer questions fluently." As Chen Xiong said this, Meng Wan smiled smugly at Chen Liu, who was furious but could not refute her, so he could only glare at her resentfully.
"Go back and copy down all the questions you didn't answer today, then come back to me tomorrow."
"Yes." Chen Liu replied weakly, like a wilted eggplant, but he didn't dare to refute.
"Alright, take this with him and go to the front yard to get the medicine."
Chen Liu took the prescription, glanced at it, then looked at Meng Zhili, agreed, and led him out.
The door creaked shut, and at Chen Xiong's prompting, Meng Wan sat down in the spot where Meng Zhili had been sitting.
"When did you get a second brother? Is seeing a doctor just an excuse to make friends?" Chen Xiong didn't miss Meng Zhili's subtle tapping of his finger. It seemed unintentional, but it perfectly matched the number of medicinal herbs Chen Liuxu had mentioned.
“The illness isn’t difficult to treat, but given his current condition, he won’t live past 25. We can only bring him here to recuperate.” Meng Wan showed no guilt at being exposed. She pushed a neatly folded piece of paper in front of Chen Xiong and skillfully picked up the tea leaves to brew tea.
Every single detail, every single point, clearly shows that they've studied this technique on purpose.
"Let's put that aside for now and tell me what exactly happened." Chen Xiong opened the note, glanced at it, and set it aside. He recognized Meng Wan's handwriting, and with just one glance, Chen Xiong roughly knew what had happened.
Meng Wan brewed another cup of tea and served it to Chen Xiong before giving him a brief account of what had happened recently.
"It's good that you left the Tang family, but why don't you come here? You can choose any room you want, do whatever you want, and no one will stop you. Tell me, why did you go to the Meng family to suffer?"
Chen Xiong frowned, while Meng Wan calmly shook her head. "It's not bitter."
"You silly child, such a big thing happened and you didn't even tell me."
