After washing up, Li Susu was about to say goodnight to Meng Wan when she saw Meng Wan standing in the yard making a phone call through the living room door.
It wasn't that Meng Wan liked feeding mosquitoes, it's just that the signal inside the house was bad, so she had to come outside to swat them. Even so, the video was still choppy.
"It must be very tiring."
Yan Nian's voice eased Meng Wan's tired nerves a little.
"A bit, it's not quite what I expected. But the people here are very welcoming. I'm staying with a student's family. She lives with her grandmother and is a very lovely girl. She's definitely different from the boys."
Meng Wan didn't just brush it off because she was tired; instead, she earnestly shared her experiences and feelings from the day with Yan Nian.
Yan Qing chuckled, "Tang Li and Meng Zhiyao must be jealous when they hear this, right?"
"I just messaged them, and the two little ones got together again today, insisting on coming over, and Mom scolded them."
"Zhiyao is much more cheerful now than when we first met."
Yan Nian sat in his office. The building had already darkened, but his office was the only one with the lights still on.
There was nothing he could do; with his girlfriend away, his love-struck mind couldn't sleep, so he could only numb himself with work.
Of course, he would never say this to Meng Wan.
"Yeah, so has my boyfriend been behaving well today? Don't tell me you're at the office right now."
Despite the use of interjections and the gentle tone of her voice, Yan Nian felt a chill run down her spine and unconsciously sat up straight.
"I couldn't sleep, so I just wanted to finish what I was doing. I'll go back in a bit." Yan Nian didn't dare to lie.
Meng Wan sighed, "Even children are more well-behaved than you, Yan Nian!"
"Yes, Teacher Wanwan, I was wrong."
Meng Wan looked helpless and resigned.
"Wanwan, how come it's only the first day..." Yan Nian's voice was almost overflowing with grievance.
Meng Wan was wearing headphones and felt a little itchy in her ears.
Her eyes were gentle, and she lowered her gaze slightly. "Yes, it's only the first day."
"Teacher." Just as Meng Wan finished speaking, Li Susu's voice suddenly came from behind.
Meng Wan took off one earphone. "Su Su, what's wrong? Why aren't you asleep yet?"
“A chair,” Li Susu pointed to the plastic stool she had brought over.
"Thank you." Meng Wan rubbed her head, but when she touched it, it was still wet.
"Is your hair still not dry?"
"Dry it?" Li Susu didn't quite understand.
She's drying herself right now, isn't she?
For no apparent reason, Meng Wan understood what Su Su hadn't said.
"Teacher, I'm leaving." Li Susu waved, and Meng Wan nodded without saying anything more.
"Wanwan, is that the child you were talking about?"
"Yes, he's nine years old."
The two chatted for a while longer. Meng Wan was worried that talking too late would disturb the sleeping elderly man, and Yan Nian understood, so he reluctantly hung up the phone.
Looking at the photo of the two of them on my desk, I've lost count of how many times I've sighed today.
Holding her phone, whose screen had gone dark, Meng Wan sat in the courtyard, looked up at the sky, and saw a sky full of stars she had never seen in the city.
After a while, she took the stool back to her room, found something, and knocked on Li Susu's door again.
"Susu, are you asleep?"
"No." Li Susu opened the door. The room was dark, with only the desk lamp illuminating it.
"Teacher, what's wrong?" Li Susu made way for Meng Wan, indicating that she could sit on her bed.
"Are you still reading so late?"
"Yes, I'm learning to write my teacher's name." Li Susu handed the paper to Meng Wan a little shyly.
The words "Meng Wan" were written densely on the paper. It was clear that she had written each stroke carefully, and her handwriting was quite immature. Some radicals were written larger, and some side characters were written smaller. The writing was crooked and uneven, but you could see that she had put a lot of effort into it.
"It doesn't look very good yet." Li Susu scratched her head.
Meng Wan patted her head and, with her consent, picked up the pencil that was only half-broken.
Each stroke and hook reveals a sharp and individualistic style.
"It looks great."
Li Susu blinked, her tone full of admiration. Teacher Wang had the best handwriting of everyone she knew, but it still couldn't compare to Meng Wan's two light strokes.
Meng Wan didn't speak, but instead listed out the strokes of her name one by one in order.
"Practice the basics first, and you'll be able to write beautifully no matter what you do in the future."
"Mmm." Li Susu nodded, her eyes full of anticipation. She took the pen, wanting to write, but Meng Wan shook her head.
"It's late. If children don't get enough sleep, they won't grow tall."
"You won't grow taller? Really?"
Meng Wan nodded. "I'm a teacher, you know."
In a child's eyes, a teacher is someone who knows everything, and their credibility is even higher than that of a parent.
Moreover, in Li Susu's eyes, Meng Wan is now an all-around beautiful and gentle angel, so she naturally listens to everything she says.
"Then I'll go to sleep now." She climbed into bed, afraid that if she stayed up even a second later, she would never grow taller.
"Don't rush, make sure your hair is dry first. Sleeping with wet hair will cause headaches."
"Then I'll go sit in the yard for a while. It's windy at night, so it'll dry quickly."
Li Susu tried to get out of bed, but Meng Wan stopped her.
"It's not this one to dry, it's this one." Meng Wan picked up the hair dryer she had brought.
Li Susu looked puzzled. "What is this?"
"This is called a hair dryer. After washing your hair, blow-dry it and it will dry quickly."
