"Hey, did you see the video I sent you? Oh my god, I'm dying of laughter! These two, one with a white face and the other with a black face, they're absolutely hilarious!" Lan Xing's voice on the other end of the phone was filled with undisguised joy.
"I saw it." Meng Wan sat in the car, her tone somewhat indulgent. "Is the banquet over?"
"No, I ran out as soon as I finished watching the excitement. Are you back yet?"
"It's on its way."
"How is Auntie?" Lan Xing had already changed out of her dress and went straight upstairs after greeting the guests. Meng Zhilian was singing, but the moment Lan Xing came in, his eyes followed her unconsciously until she disappeared from sight.
"Still the same as always."
Lan Xing sighed, unsure of what to say.
How's my third brother doing lately?
Lan Xing glanced down and said, "He's doing alright, steadily attracting customers. Don't worry, even if he's not your brother, he's still an employee in my shop, so I won't let anyone bully him."
"How's the search for a new resident singer going?"
"It's not that easy to find someone who is both handsome and sings well. And when I finally found one, you poached him from me."
"I'll keep an eye on it and send it to you later."
"At least you have a conscience."
Meng Wan chuckled. "I'm hanging up now. See you tomorrow."
"Okay, see you tomorrow."
The car drove slowly until it was confirmed that it could not enter the alley before stopping.
"Let's stop here. Remember to register the overtime slip when we get back." Meng Wan got out of the car and casually sent a message to Meng Zhili. He didn't reply, but she didn't care. It was as if she was just doing her job.
She put her phone away and walked into the alley alone. Just as she arrived, she saw Meng Zhili standing under a streetlamp talking to someone, with a car blocking their way.
"Brother." Meng Wan assumed it was Meng Zhili's friend, which explained why Meng Zhili hadn't replied to her message. Without thinking much of it, she waved and called out to him.
"Wanwan." Meng Zhili saw her, and the man who heard the voice also turned his head, just in time to meet Meng Wan's gaze.
"Good evening, my... sister." Tang Qi's voice was somewhat alluring in the darkness, but Meng Wan felt a chill run down her spine.
She rubbed her arms, not stopping. "Tang Qi, what are you doing here? Also, my surname is Meng now, your sister isn't here."
"How cold-hearted. We've been together for 17 years." Tang Qi wasn't angry. He leaned against the car with a smile on his face, but it didn't reach his eyes.
Meng Wan ignored him and silently rolled her eyes. When it comes to cold-bloodedness, ruthlessness, and cruelty, who can compare to this young master of the Tang family?
Just as he walked over, a dark figure darted out. Meng Zhili's expression changed, and before he could utter the word "evening," a hand was raised.
"Tyrannosaurus Rex, sit down!" Meng Wan pursed her lips, showing no sign of panic.
"Woof!" The Tyrannosaurus Rex obediently sat down before it could pounce on Meng Wan, sticking out its tongue and wagging its tail vigorously, looking extremely excited.
"Tch, not fun." A slightly childish voice rang out, and Meng Wan realized that Tang Li was also there. When she came over earlier, she was blocked by the car and could only see Tang Qi and Meng Zhili's heads.
"Tang Li!" Meng Wan's voice was somewhat weak.
Tang Li came out. "Tang Wan, it's been a long time."
With an innocent smile, anyone who sees him would think he's a well-behaved child.
What are you doing here?
"I'll take you back." Tang Li had already guessed that Tang Qi would come looking for Meng Wan, so he hid in the car early on. Tang Qi was naturally unwilling, but making a scene would only attract attention, so he had no choice but to bring him along.
"Take me back?" Meng Wan asked as if she had heard a joke. She walked to Meng Zhili's side, gave him a look, and indicated that he didn't need to worry.
Tang Qi saw this and his smile faded.
"Yeah, this place is dirty, dilapidated, and small. Why would you live here? Are you out of your mind?" Tang Li was young, but incredibly precocious. Coupled with the extreme educational methods of the Tang family, it would be strange if he didn't go astray.
"I told you before you went abroad that if I ever hear you say these things again, I'll cancel all your game cards!"
"Tang Wan!"
"My name is Meng Wan!"
The two stared at each other, neither willing to give in. A Tyrannosaurus Rex circled around them, and just as war seemed imminent, they both looked at Tang Qi.
"Tang Qi! Keep your brother in check!"
"Tang Qi! Control your sister!"
"I'm not his sister!" Despite their bickering, Meng Wan quickly refuted Tang Li's words.
Tang Qi glanced at Meng Zhili, a glance that sent a chill down Meng Zhili's spine, like prey being targeted by a hunter. He pursed his lips and looked back, but Tang Qi had already turned his gaze to Meng Wan.
"I've bought you a manor abroad. Come with me to Country Y the day after tomorrow." Tang Qi's words brooked no argument.
"I'll politely decline." Meng Wan took a step back. She was joking; she had finally escaped the wolf's den of the Tang family, why would she jump into a fire pit?
“Then come with me to the US.” Tang Li was unwilling to be left out.
Meng Wan bent down to look Tang Li in the eye and smiled slightly at him, "Little brat, take your dog back to the car."
Tang Li was indignant, his big eyes full of accusation. When he was abroad, wasn't he constantly being chased and coaxed by the villa's butlers? Only Tang Wan dared to treat him like this. If it weren't for the fact that she could delete his game account, he would have already had a Tyrannosaurus Rex bite her!
Meng Wan ignored Tang Li's inner turmoil. She straightened up, her eyes bright and lively as she looked at Tang Qi.
"It's getting late, you two young masters of the Tang family should head back soon. After all, your sister is in the Tang family, her name is Tang Zhiyi, and mine is Meng Wan." Meng Wan emphasized the two surnames, making each word clear and distinct.
"Let's go home, bro."
“Okay.” Meng Wan turned her back, and Meng Zhili immediately followed. He glanced back at Tang Qi, but his expression was obscured by the backlight. He could only see a child and a dog standing next to the tall figure.
"Don't look, let's go." Meng Wan quickened her pace, a vague sense of foreboding creeping in.
Meng Zhili received the signal and quickened her pace, but the next second, barking echoed in the alley. The faster Meng Wan walked, the louder the dogs barked, and even the dogs near the alley started barking.
Many people opened their windows and started cursing loudly. The elderly people living here generally have low moral character and used all sorts of foul language.
"Tang Qi, you're getting more and more of a scoundrel!" Meng Wan gritted her teeth and squeezed out these words.
"Wanwan..."
Meng Wan didn't reply to Meng Zhili. Instead, she stopped and took three deep breaths before turning around.
"Aren't you going to keep up!" Meng Wan's words were hardly a friendly response, but Tang Qi still had a smile on his face, as if he had expected Meng Wan to stop.
The barking miraculously stopped, and the alley returned to peace.
