At the airport, Meng Wan scrolled through her phone, utterly bored. Only when people gradually emerged from the exit gate did she put her phone away and glance inside. Fortunately, she didn't have to wait long before she saw the person she wanted to pick up.
"Why are you here?" Yan Nian's eyes lit up, and he seemed to have lost much of his fatigue. He quickened his pace and ran straight towards Meng Wan.
Yao Qinglin seemed used to it. He took Yan Nian's suitcase, greeted Meng Wan from a distance, and then went out.
“I wanted to come, so I came.” She naturally opened her arms, and Yan Nian naturally wrapped his arms around her. He buried his face in her shoulders and neck and sighed deeply.
"Looks like it's going to be a tough battle. I could see your dark circles from afar."
“Talking to a bunch of old men who only know how to condescendingly judge so-called young people makes me want to punch them in the face every minute.”
"Shall I buy you a wooden fish?"
Meng Wan's seemingly random remark made both of them burst out laughing.
Yan Nian straightened up, cupped her face in his hands and shook it, "Then you should buy another cassock, I'll just convert to Buddhism."
"Alright, arrange it for our Young Master Yan tomorrow."
Yan Nian ruffled her hair, his eyes full of doting affection.
Have you eaten?
Meng Wan shook her head, "I went to the old folks' place this morning, and came straight here after I finished my work."
"Let's go eat." Meng Wan nodded, and the two intertwined their fingers as they walked out of the airport.
After the two finished eating, it was still early.
"Where are you planning to go?" Yan Nian got his driver's license as soon as he turned 18.
"I don't have anything to do today. Are you going to visit your aunt? I'll come with you."
Meng Wan was distracted because the seatbelt was on backwards. She tried to fasten it several times but couldn't. Yan Nian reached out and patiently straightened it out. With a 'click,' it was fastened successfully.
The car started, and everything happened naturally, as if I had done it countless times before.
On the familiar suburban streets, both of them fell silent.
"Young Master, Miss Meng." The housekeeper was waiting at the door. Yan Nian asked about her recent situation and then let her go about her business.
Meng Wan glanced at the woman on the hospital bed and skillfully massaged her. Yan Nian didn't disturb her; he simply poured a glass of water and placed it on the cabinet next to Meng Wan before sitting down on the other side to join in the massage.
"That's about enough. The old man just had acupuncture not long ago, and the next time will be a month later." Meng Wan put Jiang Yu's arm back under the covers, tucked the blanket around her, and then got up.
"Okay." As soon as Yan Nian entered the room, his mood plummeted. Meng Wan didn't say anything, but simply patted him on the shoulder.
Yan Nian grabbed her fingers and played with them for a moment, forcing a smile. Meng Wan didn't say anything, just ruffled his hair and went out.
Only Yan Nian and the sleeping Jiang Yu remained in the room. He didn't speak, but just sat silently, holding Jiang Yu's hand and staring blankly out the window until the last rays of the setting sun faded and the room fell into darkness.
"Two years... I never thought I'd stick with it for two years. Managing a company is such a tiring thing. I'm sorry for causing you so much worry in the past."
The voice was deep, yet it was heard with perfect clarity in the dark and silent environment, including that long sigh.
On the way back, Meng Wan recounted the events of the past two days.
"For Elder Chen and Lawyer Xu to accept them as apprentices, they must be promising talents. Are you planning to cultivate them into new connections?"
"We have to find them a successor, so as not to waste their talents."
What should we do tomorrow?
"We need to take Meng Zhiyao to see Qian Yixuan."
Upon hearing the name, Yan Nian pursed his lips but said nothing.
Although he was annoyed by the people who had their eyes on him, Yan Nian wouldn't interfere with Meng Wan's social circle. No matter what Meng Wan did, he would be her staunch supporter, but the downside was that sometimes he had to secretly hide his bitter feelings.
"Shall I come pick you up?"
"No need, Qian Yixuan will come to pick me up tomorrow."
"Oh." Upon hearing this news, Yan Nian's mood immediately sombered.
Meng Wan naturally noticed Yan Nian's change in mood immediately, and simply chuckled.
"What are you laughing at? Are you already looking forward to seeing each other tomorrow?" The words weren't aggressive, but rather full of grievance, and even carried a hint of jealousy.
"Yeah, maybe we'll go to the amusement park? Or have dinner together? Come to think of it, it's been almost half a year since we last saw each other, but he always sends me postcards and little gifts wherever he goes..."
"I'll bring you some when I go on my business trip! It's just that this one is a bit special, so it's not ready yet!" Just as they came to a traffic light, Yan Nian stepped on the brake, staring intently at Meng Wan with a serious look in his eyes.
Meng Wan was charmed by Yan Nian's appearance, so she cupped his face in her hands and shook it, her face beaming with a bright smile.
"I know, I know," Meng Wan said reassuringly.
She knew perfectly well; she was just teasing Yan Nian on purpose.
"By the way, help me find a house. It doesn't need to be too big, just enough to accommodate a family of seven, a regular one."
"Finally not going to wrong yourself? You've never really suffered much, yet you insist on making yourself suffer." Yan Nian's words were tinged with heartache.
Meng Wan met Yan Nian, who was a year older than her, when she was five years old. They knew each other's lives and habits very well.
Meng Wan simply smiled and did not refute.
On the other side, the tavern opened for business as usual. Ji Sheng was sitting in his usual private room, looking through the glass window at Lan Xing talking with Meng Zhilian below.
Meng Zhilian was tuning his guitar when Lan Xing walked over. He simply nodded, his expression neither cold nor enthusiastic.
"Your performance fee for tonight has been transferred to your card. Please confirm and sign your name."
"Okay." Meng Zhilian quickly signed his name after confirming. His handwriting was flamboyant, but not bad; on the contrary, it was full of personality.
"To be honest, I'm really going to miss you."
Lan Xing's unintentional remark caused Meng Zhilian to pause for a moment, but he quickly returned to normal, so the carefree Lan Xing did not notice.
"The new one isn't bad, but I still feel like something's missing." Lan Xing stroked his chin, frowning as he pondered something.
“Ah Hao is pretty good too, he’ll get better after a couple more tries.” Meng Zhilian lowered his eyes, his tone flat.
Lanxing didn't refute, "I wish you a bright future and all the best. You can always come back to the tavern for a limited-time rerun whenever you have time."
Meng Zhilian smiled and said, "Okay, thank you for these past few days."
"Hey, stop talking about this!" Lan Xing grinned and patted his shoulder. "What's the relationship between Wanwan and me? Don't worry, if you ever can't make it in the future, just come back. I, Lan Xing, will protect you."
Meng Zhilian smiled and was about to respond when Lan Xing continued talking to herself.
"But Wanwan has always had a good eye. As long as you do as she says, you won't go too wrong."
Meng Zhilian suppressed his smile and simply nodded.
"Ah Xing! Didn't you say a new batch of wine arrived? Give me a bottle."
Ji Sheng's voice rang out, and the two looked in the direction of the voice. They saw Ji Sheng walk over and naturally put his hand on Lan Xing's shoulder.
