Chapter 230 Noodle Soup
On the way back, I was in the same car as the base chief, Taozi, and Brother Liu.
The base chief said that a friendly agreement had been signed with the Eagle Base, which would allow for some positive transactions in the future, and even mutual assistance in times of danger.
The group chatted happily for a while, and everyone was overjoyed.
The car swayed and rattled through the darkness for a long time until the scenery before us became increasingly familiar, and we arrived at the Bai Town base.
The base commander and Taozi said goodbye and went home.
When Brother Liu and I arrived at the door, the lights inside were still on.
Hearing the noise at the door, the door opened, and Mancang rushed out like a little cannonball and jumped into my arms.
"Aunt Cheng! I was so worried about you! Are you alright?"
His eyes were full of worry and tension; I could feel his deep unease.
"It's alright, it's alright, I'm back now."
I comforted Mancang and looked up at Sister Liu.
At this moment, Aunt Liu's eyes were full of tears. She held back her tears and said with a smile, "It's good that you're back, it's good that you're back."
"Quick, I've already kneaded the dough. Come inside and I'll make you something hot to eat."
Aunt Liu pulled me into the house, shouting that she wanted to cook for me.
"No, I was at the Eagle Base just now..."
Every time I finished saying no, Brother Liu would interrupt me.
Brother Liu rubbed his hands together and looked at the stove: "Great! I want to eat too. What delicious food should I make?"
Seeing that Brother Liu wanted to eat, I didn't finish my refusal.
Aunt Liu looked at the dough in the basin with delight: "It's cold, so I'll make you some noodle soup. Hurry up and go inside, I'll bring it in when it's done."
I nodded and went inside with Brother Liu. The car was old and the air conditioning wasn't very good; it had been quite cold on the way here.
Sitting on the warm kang (heated brick bed), with my hands and feet enveloped in heat, felt much more comfortable.
The four dogs were jumping around on the ground, and they were overjoyed to see me.
Tie Dan even lay directly on my lap, snoring softly, refusing to leave.
I know these guys miss me.
Mancang sat next to me, staring blankly at my hands.
I followed his gaze and looked down at my hands, where I saw red marks from rope binding.
I tugged at my sleeve to cover the red mark and said with a smile, "It's nothing, it's nothing."
I didn't know that at that moment, he already had a plan in mind.
A short while later, Aunt Liu brought in a large bowl: "Come and eat, it's ready!"
Brother Liu and I each had a large bowl, while Sister-in-law Liu and Mancang had small bowls.
Seeing my puzzled expression, Aunt Liu explained, "We've already eaten, but we'll have a bite while you eat, otherwise it'll look too tempting."
I smiled and said no, picked up my chopsticks and started eating the noodle soup.
This noodle soup contains cabbage, tomatoes, and chili peppers, paired with chewy noodles and a thick broth, making it very satisfying to eat.
The noodle soup was a little too hot to drink, but it tasted even better when slurped down like that.
After finishing a bowl of noodles, Aunt Liu quickly took the empty bowls to the kitchen. Then, instead of going to sleep, the group sat at the table and started chatting.
Brother Liu took a sip of hot tea and said with emotion, "Oh my, you have no idea how nervous we were when we went there. We didn't even dare to say a word. We were just going to risk our lives."
Aunt Liu was very concerned about how things would unfold. She clenched her fists tightly and asked nervously, "And then what? Did they start fighting?"
Brother Liu tilted his head back, as if he were a great hero, and slowly began to speak: "Then we arrived at the Eagle Base. The Eagle Base is really big, much more impressive than our base. We stood with the base commander in a small square, confronting them. To be honest, we had no confidence at all."
At this point, Brother Liu paused, and Sister-in-law Liu said anxiously, "Don't keep me in suspense, hurry up and tell me."
Brother Liu chuckled and continued, "I stood there for quite a long time. It was freezing cold; my feet were almost numb. Then their base commander's daughter came with a girl. I don't know what they said, but the base commander of the Eagle Base came over to talk to us."
Then Brother Liu smiled mysteriously and looked at Sister Liu: "The matter was resolved in just a few words. This whole thing was thanks to the girl that the base commander's daughter brought along. Guess who it is?"
Before Aunt Liu could speak, Mancang asked anxiously, "Who is it? Who is it?"
"Hehe, of course it's Aunt Cheng!"
Aunt Liu was very surprised: "Ah! Wasn't the girl arrested? How come she went with the base chief's daughter?"
I smiled and said, "What a coincidence! The base commander's daughter is my childhood friend. We've known each other for over ten years, growing up together."
Aunt Liu slapped her thigh: "Oh my god, is it possible for something to happen so coincidentally?"
Brother Liu nodded rapidly, like a chicken pecking at rice: "Yes, yes, what a coincidence! Their base, the base commander isn't bad, but the deputy base commander is really wicked. If the girl hadn't known them, tonight would have been a real disaster."
After saying that, Brother Liu shuddered in fear and took another big gulp of hot tea.
Aunt Liu turned to me curiously: "Why did they arrest you? Just because you helped catch the traitor?"
I thought for a moment and replied, "Pretty much. They mainly want to force me to draw a map of our White Town base. That deputy base commander wants to wipe us out in one fell swoop."
As soon as I said that, the eyes of the three people besides me widened in surprise.
They all shouted in unison, "What!"
I put my index finger to my lips and said, "Shh! Don't tell anyone, it's all over now."
Aunt Liu then asked, "Is everything alright? What about the deputy base commander?"
"He died. He was an old general at the time. Chengcheng held a gun to his head, and the base commander's daughter grabbed Chengcheng's hand and banged his head off. He died instantly."
Brother Liu vividly described the scene, and Sister-in-law Liu and Mancang listened with great interest.
The refugee camp and the Eagle Base were truly terrifying places. After spending a few days there, I was completely exhausted.
They were chatting animatedly, but I kept yawning.
Forget about politeness, I waved my hand and said, "No, no, you three can chat, I need to sleep, I'm just too sleepy."
Aunt Liu then realized, "Oh, right, sister, these past few days have been exhausting. Let's go to sleep, we can talk more later."
Lying on the warm kang (heated brick bed), I soon fell into a deep sleep.
When I woke up in the middle of the night, I was startled to see Mancang staring at me with his big, round eyes in the moonlight.
I whispered, "Why aren't you sleeping? Why are you staring at me? You scared me."
Mancang blinked sheepishly, "I'm keeping an eye on you, in case any bad guys come."
I reached out and patted the blankets covering Mancang, mumbling sleepily, "Go to sleep. The base commander has sent people to keep watch outside our yard, so there won't be any danger."
