Chapter 257 They Came to the Door
The two walked to the small square, also known as "May Fourth Square," chatting and laughing.
On the west side of the square, there is a high platform where Sumi's father, Mancang, and some other high-ranking officials stand.
A large number of residents had already gathered in the middle of the square, and more residents were coming from all directions to this side.
Sumi took my hand and walked quickly to the vicinity of the platform. Then she stepped onto it, and I followed her with difficulty.
Mancang was dressed very formally today, standing there in a sharp suit. This young man had already grown very tall and had a robust and muscular build.
Looking at him now, he not only looks like an adult, but he is also a handsome and dashing man.
He stood with the other executives, listening respectfully to Sumi's father.
Sumi and I stood quietly in a corner, waiting for them to finish speaking.
As soon as the group of people dispersed, Sumi led me to rush forward.
"Full warehouse! Look who's here!"
She slapped Mancang on the shoulder and spoke loudly.
Mancang was startled, turned around and saw me. His expression immediately changed from serious to surprised.
"Aunt Cheng! You're here!"
Mancang was very happy and called my name a little loudly, but then realized that the occasion was inappropriate and lowered his voice.
I was completely confused and didn't know what I was supposed to do today, but I still smiled and talked to Mancang.
"Yes, you look great in this outfit today."
I turned around and greeted Sumi's dad, chatted for a few more minutes, and when most of the residents had arrived, the meeting began. Sumi and I sat quietly to the side.
Sumi's father stood up and said, "Thank you to all the residents for choosing Eagle Base. The development of Eagle Base over the years is inseparable from everyone's joint efforts."
After he finished speaking, he paused briefly, and enthusiastic applause erupted from the audience.
Sure enough, the leader would pause after each sentence, and applause would be given during the pause.
It's a rule that has remained unchanged since ancient times.
"Now that I am getting old, I am no longer able to manage the Eagle Base. From now on, I will appoint Su Mancang as the base director and Su Mi as the deputy base director. I hope that the two of them will work diligently during their tenure, put the residents first, and lead the Eagle Base to grow stronger."
This news surprised me somewhat.
I stared wide-eyed and turned to look at Sumi. Sumi pouted and smiled happily.
As applause erupted from the audience, I whispered in Sumi's ear, "What the hell? Why did they make Mancang the base commander? You should have been the one!"
Sumi turned around and whispered in my ear, "Oh, being the base commander is so stressful and tiring. I just want to lie down and eat delicious food every day. Let Mancang be the commander. Mancang is kind and won't drive me away."
After she finished speaking, she blinked and joined in the clapping.
I stared at her for two seconds, then realized, "That's right, Sumi has always been like this, she just wants to be a hands-off manager."
It's likely that Sumi's father chose the full warehouse because he was worried that Sumi would be too tired.
No wonder Sumi wanted to take Mancang away back then. Sumi's father probably had been planning this for a long time, wanting to adopt a reliable child as his godson.
Okay, now I really do have powerful backers.
There are two bases in the vicinity.
The base leaders are Mancang and Taozi, and the deputy base leader is my best friend Sumi.
What do I have to worry about? I can just relax and live a peaceful life now.
Mancang stood up and said in a strong voice that he would definitely do his job well and live up to everyone's expectations, and then the meeting ended.
As the group walked, they chatted in hushed tones, and I listened intently.
"This Mancangxing, although he is a bit young, is reliable."
“Our old base commander had this idea a long time ago, and I guessed it long ago.”
"Hopefully, Mancang can handle things as well as the old base commander."
"Mancang is now in charge of many things, and he's much more efficient and decisive than he was at the old base!"
The group dispersed as they chatted.
Sumi's father looked at Mancang with firm eyes, patted him on the shoulder, and said, "I believe in you. Do a good job!"
Su Mi leaned closer to me and suddenly explained, "Oh, right, don't mind what my dad said about Su Mancang. He added the surname to him to make everyone believe him. You're not angry, are you?"
I was taken aback when Sumi said that.
Actually, I didn't care much at all, since Mancang had long been treated as a godson by Sumi's father.
"Oh, it's alright. As long as Mancang is happy, that's what matters most."
I smiled easily and didn't take it to heart.
After Sumi's dad turned and left, Sumi and I waited for Mancang, thinking we'd celebrate with him later.
Mancang stood in the middle of the stage looking this way, and was about to walk over when an uninvited guest suddenly interrupted our conversation.
"Tiedan'er? Is it really you? Tiedan'er!"
A slightly aged voice came from below the stage.
The man was dressed in somewhat shabby clothes, leaning on a cane, looking up at Mancang on the stage.
Mancang's face, which had been full of joy, slowly turned into hatred and loathing the moment she saw the man.
"I don't know you."
After a few seconds, Mancang calmly said these five words and then walked in my direction.
But the man clearly didn't want to let him off easily.
"Come here quickly! Tie Dan'er, Tie Dan'er has made something of himself now, he's the new base commander of the Eagle Base!"
The man shouted loudly at the scattering crowd behind him, and several people rushed out from inside.
I recognized two of them; they were the ones who came to my house with this man to demand my return years ago.
Another boy, about the same age as Mancang, wearing a slicked-back short-sleeved shirt, followed them out.
Behind the boy was a hunched woman: "Oh dear, wait a minute, my little darling, quickly put your clothes on, or you'll catch a cold."
The boy impatiently shoved the woman aside, strode to the front of the stage, and jumped up.
"It really is you, cousin. You've really made something of yourself now."
Mancang seemed frozen in place. He looked at me with his back to the person, but his eyes were empty, as if he wasn't even looking at me.
"Why aren't you saying anything? Cousin, now that you're successful, you can't forget about us, can you? My dad raised you!"
So this must be the cousin that Mancang mentioned urinating on his face.
As he spoke, he poked Mancang's shoulder, and Mancang frowned.
Sumi was unaware of the situation and looked back and forth with a puzzled expression.
When Mancang's third uncle saw that his son had spoken to Mancang, he also spoke up with a fawning expression.
"Yes, Tiedan'er, I've forgiven you for what happened back then, but we're family after all. We're having a tough time now, so you have to lend a hand."
Mancang's expression grew increasingly displeased. He suddenly turned around and stared at his third uncle, saying, "You forgave me back then? Did I need your forgiveness?"
With a cold snort, he grabbed me and Su Mi and left.
