Chapter 72 Being Watched
For the next few days, my daily routine remained basically the same.
I wake up in the afternoon, cook and eat, and then do some chores in the basement.
When the nighttime temperature drops, I go out to water the fields and pick some fruits and vegetables to eat.
In the evening, I first took the big dog outside the gate to relieve itself, and then brought it back to apply medicine to it.
Seven days passed like this, and the big dog's spirits improved more and more.
Even after being discharged from the hospital, he no longer needs to be carried to urinate; although he walks with a slight limp, he is not as slow as before.
When I woke up on the afternoon of the eighth day, I saw that the dog's wound had scabbed over quite well, so there was no need to continue applying medicine.
I took the fish out of the refrigerator and stewed it.
I kept half for myself, and after stewing the other half until tender, I removed the fish bones and mixed it with most of a bowl of noodles.
The food was shared with the big dog and the little melon, and the big dog wolfed it down as if it had never eaten before.
Sometimes I wonder how this big dog survived.
Where has it been hiding for so long in this extremely cold, apocalyptic world?
If it has an owner, it seems as if it has never eaten anything from home.
Forget it, I can't figure it out anyway, so I might as well stop thinking about it.
After watering the vegetable garden in the evening, I got a little hungry again.
So he went back into the kitchen and started making himself a late-night snack.
Just as I went to the back room to find something to eat, I heard a little chicken clucking. It must have been the big dog going out to relieve itself.
I came out of the back room to see how well its leg had recovered.
I saw the big dog walking briskly, and the wound didn't seem to affect its gait much, so it looks like it's about to heal.
I picked up the metal basin and threw potatoes into it, which startled the big dog with a splash.
The big dog turned around and saw me in the kitchen, paused for a moment, then turned back and continued walking out of the yard.
Then I noticed it had become lame...
Instead of walking normally as before, he limped slowly with one leg.
What a good dog! Afraid that I would chase it away, it pretended to be sick to gain my sympathy.
Sometimes, when people are speechless to the extreme, they can laugh.
I stood alone in the kitchen, laughing helplessly. This girl looks like a well-bred young lady, but she'll actually pretend to be sick just to freeload.
However, although it has recovered, it is still very weak, so it is important to ensure it receives adequate nutrition.
After dark, I took my fishing rod and went fishing at the pond with Xiaodi.
It was very dark at night, and the faint moonlight was blocked by the lush trees.
I was a little scared, and perhaps Xiao Di sensed my emotions, so it lay close to me.
A flashlight lay on the ground. I held the fishing rod in one hand and patted Xiaodi's head with the other.
I prayed that the fish would bite soon.
Perhaps because of the hot weather, the fish were active at night, because after only ten minutes, the fishing rod started to move.
I stood up excitedly and pulled hard, catching a really big fish, almost as big as the one Xiaogua caught.
I quickly removed the fishing hook and put the fish in the bucket.
He sat down again and started fishing.
Coming here every day is too scary. I'd rather stay a little longer tonight and catch more fish, and try to avoid coming to this eerie ditch at night in the future.
Luckily, I had my sweet little one to keep me company; she's such a good girl.
I fished for over an hour and caught four fish.
Two big ones and two small ones should be enough for us to eat for a while.
I reeled in my fishing rod and carefully circled the pond to go home.
Little Di clung tightly to my legs, following me step by step as we walked home.
As soon as we got home and opened the windshield, Xiao Gua burst out like a firecracker.
When it saw me and Xiaodi come back together, it jumped around and sniffed us thoroughly.
It sounds like they're saying you two went out and sneaked some good stuff?
I couldn't be bothered with it and went straight to the kitchen to start processing the fish in the bucket.
I finished preparing the four fish in no time and put them all into the freezer.
After taking a shower, I prepared to go back to the darkroom to sleep.
But then I remembered that it would be inconvenient to carry the bucket back, and I forgot to lock the gate.
I took a flashlight and went outside to lock the gate in the yard.
Just as the door was about to close, the flashlight swept outside, and I vaguely saw a faint green light.
"You must have misread it, right?"
I suspect I'm too tired; I feel dizzy and my vision is blurry, and I'm seeing stars.
But I was still a little worried and decided to take another look.
I shone my flashlight on the spot where there had been light and discovered four eyes that were glowing green.
Holy crap, what is that?!
It's a wild beast, isn't it? It's a wild beast, isn't it?!
At first I didn't react, but after I did, I quickly closed the door and started locking it.
My hands were trembling as I tried to lock the door, and it took me ages to finally manage to do so.
My heart was pounding in my chest, and I ran home as fast as my legs could carry me.
If they were wild animals, they could certainly get over my wall.
As I thought about it, I locked the windshield door tightly from the inside, and then locked the main door from the inside as well, which made me feel a little more at ease.
It must be because I was fishing at night, and the smell of fish attracted wild animals.
This is bad, I'm being watched by a wild beast, aren't I?
What could it be?
Tiger? Wolf? Bear? Or maybe a smaller fox or badger?
I prayed that it was a fox or a badger, at least one I could beat.
Despairing, he returned to the dark room, lay on the bed still shaken, and couldn't fall asleep.
Thinking to myself, the extreme cold had just ended, and I'd only had a few days of peace before being targeted by wild animals again.
With so many dogs around here, wouldn't they all become their food?
Xiaodi is my own daughter, whom I've raised since she was a kitten. She's so well-behaved, and the thought of her throat being bitten open by some terrifying wild beast breaks my heart.
The more I thought about it, the less I could sleep, and I even started to feel anxious, so I hid under the covers and cried secretly.
I don't know how long I cried, but I fell asleep when it was just getting light.
The next day, after I got up, I kept thinking about it and how to deal with them.
They searched the basement and found a lot of steel balls and a slingshot.
If all else fails, use a slingshot to shoot them until they're too scared to mess with me.
But I'm also worried that the slingshot isn't powerful enough. If the wild animals hold a grudge, won't I die even faster?
I was distracted all day and didn't feel like cooking fish for the dogs.
I hastily prepared a meal and ate it as is.
Before it got dark, they pulled the cart out to water the vegetables while the setting sun was still warm.
The vegetable garden definitely needs watering; you have to go out and water it every morning and evening.
If I had to choose a time to go out, I would rather choose the hot daytime than go out at night.
As I watered the vegetables, I nervously looked around, my other hand gripping the stun gun tightly.
If any wild animals come near, I'll shock their necks hard with a stun gun.
I didn't see any wild animals until I had watered all the vegetable patches.
However, I didn't dare to linger. I quickly packed up the buckets and hurried home.
Before long, it got dark.
The big dog was about to go outside to pee again, and I was afraid there might be wild animals outside, so I gestured for it to pee inside the yard.
The big dog refused and sat by the gate, insisting on going out, but I still didn't agree. I couldn't allow the life I had just saved to be ruined by other wild animals.
Seeing how determined I was to prevent it from going out, the big dog finally gave in, urinating at the gate before returning to the house.
