Chapter 96 I'm not afraid of being impolite
"Let's go then, get in my car."
I said to everyone.
"No, let's go apply for another car. Otherwise, you'll have to drive us back tonight, and it's not safe for you to go back by yourself."
Brother Liu refused to ride in my car and walked towards the base center.
"Do we need to trade for the base's vehicles? Are they expensive?"
"The car doesn't need to be changed, but the oil does."
Brother Liu spoke up to explain.
I quickly caught up with Brother Liu.
"Brother Liu, you only need to ask to borrow the car, you don't need to change the oil, I specially brought oil with me."
Upon hearing this, Brother Liu's eyebrows shot up with joy.
"That's great, otherwise this oil is quite expensive."
I didn't go inside the base center. A little while later, Brother Liu came out with the key.
I took the diesel can off the car and handed it to Brother Liu.
"Wow, so much oil, girl."
The older brother weighed the oil can in his hand, only filled it with 1/3 of it, and then gave the rest back to me.
"You don't need to return it to me, you can keep it for later use."
"That won't do. You must take it back quickly. This oil is very precious."
Brother Liu refused to accept the oil drum no matter what I said, but I couldn't leave a bunch of people waiting, so I took the oil drum and everyone got in the car to set off.
Brother Wang and Brother Liu followed Brother Liu into a car, with Taozi following slowly behind them.
"Taozi, go ride in the girl's car, we can't find anyone else here."
I don't know if there was really no room left, but Brother Liu ushered Taozi into my car.
Taozi got into my car, and I drove slowly in front.
Brother Liu was driving behind me.
Taozi and I were silent for a while, then he suddenly asked me softly, "Sister, were you crying just now?"
I felt embarrassed and didn't want to answer, so I pretended not to hear and continued driving attentively.
"Why was a wall suddenly added to the courtyard? Did something happen a few days ago?"
Seeing that I didn't speak, Taozi didn't shut up, but asked another question.
"Why are you so curious? It's very impolite to ask about other people's privacy, kid."
If I don't say something, this child might ask something else.
"I'm not afraid of being rude, I'm afraid you'll be bullied."
Taozi was silent for a while, then suddenly blurted out this sentence.
The sudden concern surprised and embarrassed me, unlike the concern I felt for Sister Liu.
"I wasn't bullied..."
Not knowing what to say, I could only reply with this sentence in a soft voice.
Taozi didn't respond to my question, probably because he felt that his question was a bit too sensitive.
After a moment of silence, seemingly uncomfortable with the overly quiet atmosphere, Taozi changed the subject: "Sister, do you know that this year I harvested a huge amount of grain and vegetables all by myself? I'm pretty amazing, aren't I?"
"That's pretty impressive."
I was focused on driving and didn't have time to say anything to him; I just went along with what he said.
"You're pretty amazing, I know you've been living alone this year too."
Taozi turned his head to the side, his eyes crinkling into crescent moons as he smiled, revealing a row of white teeth, and said this.
I felt encouraged by him, and I raised my eyebrows and nodded heavily.
“That makes sense, we’re both equally good.”
"Let me tell you, these past few days..."
And so, Taozi continued to share his life with me, and after more than 10 minutes we arrived in the town.
When we reached the center of the town, Brother Liu's car honked its horn.
I parked the car and then got out.
At this point, Brother Liu and the others also got off the bus.
"Look there, the construction isn't finished yet, isn't it all bricks?"
I looked in the direction Brother Liu was pointing, and sure enough, there was a large area of bricks.
Then a few people went to move bricks, and I went back to the car to get a few pairs of gloves that I had left in the car.
These are spare gloves I kept from when I went to the lumberyard to move wood blocks.
"Carry this with you, don't hurt your hands."
"Oh, no need. Save the gloves for more important occasions."
I handed out the gloves one by one, but everyone waved their hands in refusal.
"Use them quickly, I have plenty at home. I'll get you a few after the courtyard wall is finished."
As soon as I mentioned that there were others at home, everyone took the gloves and put them on.
The five of us moved bricks together, and in no time we had moved a lot of bricks.
"Is this enough, Brother Liu?"
I figured we had enough bricks, so I asked them if we should stop.
"There are two cars and a lot of people, so we'll help you move some more. You can find a place to park them when you get home, and use them whenever you want."
Brother Liu didn't stop and kept moving bricks; it seems he wanted to stock up on more bricks for me.
There are so many good people in the world who always think of me.
My heart warmed, and I mustered all my energy to continue moving bricks.
After both trucks had carried a lot of bricks, they finally stopped and drove home.
It was almost noon when I got home, and I was really worried that I wouldn't be able to finish building the courtyard wall today.
Everyone had been helping to move bricks for quite a while, so I decided to let them go inside and rest for a bit, since it was time to prepare lunch.
"Brother, let's go inside and rest for a while, then we can eat before we get back to work."
As I spoke, I took out my keys and opened the door.
"Oh dear, it's getting late. If we don't get going soon, we might not have enough time. Let's work for a bit first, no rush to eat."
After Brother Liu finished speaking, he called to Taozi and the others to move bricks under the car.
"Then you guys unload the truck first, I'll go cook. Once the food is ready, we'll eat first, and then we'll get back to work."
After thinking about it for a bit, I still think it's better to cook first.
"Okay, then bring us the tools before you start cooking."
I immediately obeyed and went to find the tools for building the wall.
I found a bunch of shovels, trowels, and other miscellaneous tools.
Suddenly I remembered a big problem: I moved the bricks but didn't have any cement. I only had a little bit left after I finished building the pigsty last time.
"Oh my god, Brother Liu, I think I forgot to buy cement."
I'm in a terrible mood. I feel so confused that I could forget something so important.
Brother Liu grinned: "Hehe, if you forgot, would I not remind you? I brought it with me when I borrowed the car."
When I looked into Brother Liu's car, I saw that there were indeed several bags of cement piled up inside.
"This is wonderful, absolutely wonderful! Brother Liu is truly reliable."
I immediately went from sadness to joy and praised Brother Liu profusely.
"It's nothing, it's nothing."
Brother Liu felt a little embarrassed by my praise and started scratching his head again.
"Once we finish building the courtyard wall, we can discuss it together and calculate the labor costs and cement costs together."
I can't take advantage of Brother Liu; the fact that he's helping me with the work is already a great help.
After saying that, he turned around and went back inside to cook.
Take out a dried rabbit, wash it with water, and chop it into small pieces with a large axe. Peel and chop three or four large potatoes for later use.
Light the stove, pour in some oil, and sauté chopped green onions, ginger, and garlic until fragrant.
Stir-fry the rabbit meat chunks in a pot until fragrant, then add potatoes and stir-fry together, along with some light soy sauce, fermented soybean paste, and other spices.
Once it's almost cooked, add two large ladles of water, along with appropriate amounts of salt and thirteen-spice powder, and simmer.
Place a steamer basket on top of the stew, along with several large steamed buns from yesterday and a large bowl of braised pork.
