Chapter 97 Rabbit Stew with Potatoes
Cover the pot, wait for several tens of minutes, then lift the lid and you'll have staple food, stewed meat, and steamed meat all in one pot.
Before stewing the rabbit, go to the yard to check on the work being done.
They were moving sand and cement around in the middle of the yard.
I first went to the east room to set up the large floor table that I had just bought for free a few days ago, and then I prepared to go to the west wing to move some chairs.
Taozi came over to help when we were moving chairs.
"Sister, let me do these physical tasks."
Taozi's work style seems a bit exaggerated; he carries two heavy chairs in each hand and brings four chairs at once.
"Is there anything else we need to move, sister?"
As if she had just warmed up, she gestured as if she was preparing to continue helping me move things.
"No need, you can move it all in one trip."
To be honest, he really did move everything in one trip.
Taozi smiled but didn't say anything. He went back to the yard and helped Brother Liu and the others with their work.
I set out bowls and chopsticks in the room. The kang (heated brick bed) is already getting warm, and the east room is cozy. It won't be cold when we eat later.
After the rabbit meat had been stewing for more than 20 minutes, I started preparing the stir-fried vegetables.
Let's just make a simple stir-fry of celery and pork.
The fire on the small stove was burning brightly. The meat was stir-fried until fragrant, and then celery was added and stir-fried. No need to add many seasonings, the original flavor of the vegetables was delicious.
When it's almost cooked, toss it in the pan a few times. The small flames will leap out along the edge of the pan, which means it's definitely cooked with a wok hei (wok aroma), and it will smell delicious.
The celery and pork stir-fry filled a whole plate. Every time I cook a dish and pour it onto a plate, it's just the right amount of meat, and it feels so comforting.
At this moment, the lid of the large pot was lifted, and white steam immediately filled the entire room, making everything misty.
Using a rag as a base, I carried the bowl of steamed buns and the large bowl of braised pork to the stove.
Pick up the steamer basket and stir-fry the rabbit stew with potatoes in the pot for a few seconds with a spatula.
The rabbit meat and potatoes have a rich, savory sauce flavor and a unique caramelized aroma.
After stir-frying, the broth becomes thicker.
I found a small bowl and scooped it full with big spoons.
There was some left in the pot, so I took out a large porcelain bowl and put it in the bowl.
The whole pot of rabbit stew with potatoes is placed on the heated kang (a traditional heated brick bed) so it won't get cold. We eat the meat in the large porcelain bowl first, and then go to the kang to get more after we finish it.
A large bowl of stewed rabbit with potatoes, braised pork, stir-fried celery with pork, and a small plate of cold pickled vegetables were all served.
I went to the windshield door and shouted into the yard, "Dinner's ready! Everyone come and eat and rest for a while."
I turned on the hot water in the bathroom and filled the sink with hot water.
The men chatted as they went to the bathroom to wash their hands.
"What dish did you make? It smells so good."
Brother Liu smelled the fragrance and asked me.
"I made rabbit stew with potatoes and braised pork. Eat more later."
I handed Brother Liu a towel with a smile while answering his questions.
"Sister, you're amazing! Your cooking smells so good!"
Taozi also came over with a smile, extending his hand for a towel, and bowed slightly to praise me.
This kid is quite tall. He called me "sister" while also having to bend down to talk to me.
I smiled and handed Taozi a towel. After everyone had washed their hands, I invited them inside for dinner.
Seeing the table laden with a sumptuous spread, though not many in variety, the portions were generous, and both dishes were large meat dishes, they became quite polite with me.
"Hey, why make such a hearty dish? Leave some for yourself, girl. We're fine with whatever we eat."
Brother Wang swallowed hard, his eyes fixed on the food as he politely greeted me.
"What's the point of leaving anything behind? The more people there are, the better the food tastes. Come on, sit down and eat."
He invited everyone to sit down, and the older brothers didn't stand on ceremony and started eating heartily.
"Mmm! This braised pork is so authentic, the meat smells amazing."
With his mouth full of steamed buns, Brother Liu praised indistinctly.
"Taozi, why are you eating so delicately today? You're not usually like this."
Brother Liu chuckled and joked with Taozi, glancing in my direction.
I kind of understood what Brother Liu meant, but I didn't know what to say, so I pretended not to understand.
"You should eat as much of this rabbit stew with potatoes as you like. There's still a big pot of it on the kang (heated brick bed)."
I urged everyone to eat more.
Just then, the door to the breeding shed started creaking, probably because something had happened to the mother wolf.
I quickly put down my bowl and chopsticks and ran to the breeding room.
Open the door and you'll see the mother wolf standing there anxiously looking out.
As soon as it saw me, it anxiously circled around me.
Several dogs that were sleeping by the kitchen stove also came over curiously to take a look.
The mother wolf circled me once, and seeing that I was unharmed, she glanced at the east room a few times, as if relieved, and then slowly climbed back onto the mat.
I then understood what the mother wolf meant. She probably heard men's voices again, and many men at that, and thought I was in danger again.
"Let's go out for a walk, I've been cooped up all day."
I patted the mother wolf's head and pointed outside.
It seems that every wolf is very perceptive; they understood my actions just by looking at them.
The mother wolf slowly stood up and walked towards the east room, her large belly protruding.
"Oh dear, this dog..."
Liu Erge looked at the mother wolf as she entered the house, somewhat puzzled, perhaps because he thought the dog looked rather unusual.
After thinking for a moment, he said, "It's a husky, isn't it?"
"What? That wolf?"
Brother Liu, still chewing on meat, spoke indistinctly.
"Oh, girl, you keep wolves as pets?"
Brother Liu got so excited that he spat out crumbs of steamed bun from his mouth.
“It’s not my baby. She came to my house to rest during her pregnancy. She will go back after giving birth and finishing her postpartum confinement.”
The mother wolf sat close to my legs. Afraid that Liu Erge's voice would be too loud and frighten her, I stroked her head to comfort her while answering him.
"This girl is amazing."
After hearing this, Brother Liu gave a thumbs up.
"You need to get to know all the people eating here. If you run into them on the mountain, don't bite them."
I lowered my head slightly, stroked the mother wolf, and whispered to her, though I was also saying it to everyone else.
Let the mother wolf get acquainted with them, so that not only will the wolves not attack them in the future, but hopefully the people at the White Town base will also refrain from attacking the wolf pack when they encounter Sang Biao's wolf pack.
"I've never seen a wolf in the mountains before. If I hadn't seen one here twice, I probably would never have seen one in my life."
Brother Liu picked up where I left off.
Taozi put the bones that everyone had gnawed on on the ground. Xiaogua and the mother wolf bent down, picked up a few pieces, and chewed them up and swallowed them.
Little Di wouldn't stoop to eating these things; it doesn't have a big appetite to begin with, and I usually feed it enough to fill its stomach.
Seeing that they had almost finished eating, there was only a little bit of rabbit stew with potatoes left on the kang (heated brick bed), and all the other dishes and steamed buns were gone.
The remaining bit was deliberately left because everyone felt it wouldn't be good to eat everything without leaving anything.
"After we've eaten our fill, we should work hard for the girls. They've treated us to such a lavish meal, so we can't let them down."
Brother Liu stretched and walked out while talking.
