The room was heated by an underfloor heating system, filling it with warm, cozy air. However, perhaps because of her period, Xingxing still felt a bit cold. She wrapped herself tightly in her cloak and didn't want to move. Even her meals were fed to her bite by bite by Zhu Lin.
After she finished eating, Zhu Lin took a handkerchief and wiped her mouth, then helped her up to sit in the inner room. Immediately, palace servants came to clean up the leftovers in the side room.
Xingxing went back to the inner room and immediately climbed into bed and snuggled under the covers. It was still more comfortable under the covers. Although she didn't have abdominal pain during her period, she was still quite sensitive to cold and felt lazy.
"Don't lie down right after eating, sit for a while before you sleep." Zhu Lin coaxed her to talk, worried that she might have indigestion.
"It's so cold, I need to build up some weight so I won't feel cold. I just want to lie down." Xingxing felt like she had no bones in her body, so she slumped against the headboard and didn't want to move.
"Be careful not to hurt your neck, sit up straight." Zhu Lin brought over a pillow and placed it behind her back for her to lean on.
Xingxing held his slender fingers and squeezed his palm. She tilted her head back and said softly, "Brother Lin, give me a kiss, kiss me here."
She pointed to her lips, her large eyes revealing a hint of cunning.
Zhu Lin looked down at her, his peach blossom eyes filled with a hint of a smile. He put one arm around her shoulder and supported himself on the headboard with the other, slowly leaning down. Their faces drew closer and closer, and just as their lips were about to touch.
"Princess, Prince Consort," Qingyan called out loudly as she entered from outside. However, she did not go directly into the inner room because the princess had not allowed her in. Instead, she stood at the door of the side room and continued to loudly relay the message, "Princess, His Majesty said that it is late at night and that anyone who should not remain in the palace should leave immediately. Princess, please also make your own arrangements as soon as possible."
In an instant, all the romantic atmosphere vanished. Xingxing snorted and blinked, her long eyelashes gently brushing against someone's face. The other person blinked back, their equally long and curled eyelashes lightly brushing against Xingxing's eyebrows and eyes.
Xingxing pursed her lips and chuckled, like a kitten that had just stolen some cream. Zhu Lin's eyes darkened, and he quickly touched her lips before leaving. He straightened up and said in an ambiguous tone, "Perhaps I should marry you after the New Year."
Before Xingxing could react, he moved swiftly, and in an instant, the window opened and closed, and Zhu Lin's figure disappeared. Xingxing jumped off the bed and leaned out the window to look.
But all they saw was a white blur that swiftly swept past the palace wall and disappeared in an instant.
At this moment, Qingyan peeked in and, by the light of the luminous pearl, noticed that the princess's two fair feet were standing on the ground. She immediately became anxious and said, "Princess, why aren't you wearing shoes? Even if the room is heated by the underfloor heating, the ground is still very cold. You should go back to bed quickly, don't catch a cold, my ancestor."
Qingyan suddenly picked her up and carried her to the bed, covering her with a blanket. Then she hurriedly closed the window. In just a short while, the wind blew the snowflakes in, and a few snowflakes stuck to Qingyan's head.
"Qingyan, why is Father still having people watching me? It's like I'm under house arrest. Do I have any freedom left?" Xingxing protested softly.
"Princess, there's a whole group of guards outside, aren't they all His Majesty's men? If you just call one of them over for questioning, you'll find out that the Prince Consort has sneaked into the palace again late at night. Besides, it's really against the rules for a man and a woman to be alone together, and it has a bad influence," Qingyan earnestly advised.
"Go out, I'm going to sleep." Xingxing didn't want to listen to her nagging, so she sent her away. Not to mention in the palace, even unmarried men and women in peasant families couldn't be alone. If people found out, they would be bombarded with gossip.
Her status was so high that no one in the palace dared to gossip about her behind her back, but that would still have a bad influence. It seemed that the marriage should be put on the agenda as soon as possible.
In the Hall of Diligent Governance, the emperor put down the memorial he had just finished reviewing, glanced at the black-clad guard, who was the emperor's most trusted confidant. It was he who discovered that the imperial son-in-law had secretly entered the palace again and reported it to the emperor.
"Has Zhu Lin left the palace yet?" the emperor asked.
"Your Majesty, Young Master Zhu has already left," the guard replied respectfully.
"Keep an eye on him. Don't let him stay in the princess's palace for too long. These two little brats have no sense of propriety at all if we don't stop them." The emperor snorted.
On the rooftop, Zhu Lin heard the emperor's words clearly. Tsk, this future father-in-law is really difficult to deal with. To guard against him, even the most skilled and trusted bodyguard has been dispatched.
But did the emperor think that this would stop him?
They underestimated him. He was just feinting, circling outside the palace walls before returning. Now he's crouching on the roof of the Hall of Diligent Governance, and none of the guards, including the one with the best martial arts skills, could detect his arrival.
To avoid making the emperor too proud, and also for his father-in-law's safety, Zhu Lin deliberately made a noise when he left, alerting the group of secret guards and even the emperor to the presence of someone on the roof.
"Who goes there?" An Yi moved in a flash in front of the emperor, assuming a protective stance.
The emperor's face darkened. The palace's defenses were far too weak. Anyone could sneak in, and the group of self-proclaimed highly skilled guards were completely unaware. What a bunch of good-for-nothings.
Just as the emperor was enraged, An Er entered and said, "Your Majesty, that man was the imperial son-in-law."
They must tell the Emperor that the visitor is the Imperial Son-in-Law. Only that extraordinary man cannot be stopped by them; no one else can escape their eyes. If it were anyone else, they would have been captured or killed long ago.
Sure enough, when the emperor heard that the person who had been eavesdropping was Zhu Lin, his anger subsided by half, but he was still very frustrated. Why was it that none of the secret guards he had painstakingly trained could defeat that brat?
"Send more people. We can't let Zhu Lin enter the palace too easily. If we don't teach this brat a lesson, he thinks my palace is an inn, coming and going as he pleases. He's infuriating me!" The emperor lost even the will to review memorials.
