Jiang Cheng clenched the silver in his hand. Three taels and two hundred coins were enough for him to live on his own for a while after leaving home. He also had some skills to make money, so living would not be a problem.
It's no wonder that Jiang Cheng wants to escape. Although the Song family is a big family in Xinghua Village, the relationship between the branches is not harmonious. Song Tingzhi is the son of the eldest branch of the Song family. He has a younger sister and a younger brother to support. Now that his father is ill, the family is in a difficult situation. So Chen Mei doesn't want Jiang Caiyun to marry him, because she would only suffer if she marries him. Moreover, although Song Tingzhi is good-looking, he is a butcher and his reputation is not very good. Butchers kill animals and are always stained with blood, which is unlucky. At the beginning, Chen Mei saw that the Song family was well-off and butchers had a promising future. But now that Song Tao is ill and the eldest branch is gradually declining, Chen Mei has other plans.
For several days in a row, Jiang Cheng got up early every day and kept the house in tidy order, so that Chen Mei could not find any fault, which made Chen Mei angry but had no place to vent.
Until the day before Jiang Caiyun's wedding, Chen Mei changed his usual behavior and asked Jiang Cheng to have a good rest in the house, saying that Jiang Caiyun was getting married, and he, as her brother, would take her out tomorrow, so he should stay in the house and have a good rest today, and go out to see her off in the best possible manner tomorrow.
"I understand." Jiang Cheng responded from inside the house. This day had finally come.
These past few days, Jiang Cheng has been working hard every day to keep the house in order, just so that he can return to his room early to prepare for his escape plan. He wants to make sure Chen Mei and the others get everything they deserve.
In the evening, Jiang Cheng was lying on the bed when he heard the door being locked with a "click".
"What are you doing?" Jiang Cheng pretended to be angry and ran to the door and knocked.
"Nothing, you're getting married tomorrow. Just take a good rest today." Chen Mei thought Jiang Cheng couldn't escape, so she told the truth, "The Song family is well-off, so marrying into their family would be a good deal for you."
"You...are going too far!" Jiang Cheng knocked on the door even harder.
"Just stay here. Someone will come to pick you up tomorrow morning." After saying that, Chen Mei took the key and left.
Hearing the footsteps slowly receding, Jiang Cheng gathered his breath and returned to the bedside. He stuffed the purse and jade pendant wrapped in cloth on the bed into his arms and walked to the wardrobe. He took down all the boxes on the wardrobe one by one, revealing a window at the back that was large enough for one person to pass through.
Jiang Cheng looked at the window and smiled. Chen Mei married him with Jiang Caiyun when he was nine years old. Although she usually asked him to do rough work, she rarely stepped into his room. Besides, she usually blocked the window with something, so he never knew that there was a window in his room.
Jiang Cheng turned around, took another look at the room where he had lived for eighteen years, and then climbed out of the window without looking back.
Late at night, Jiang Cheng ran through the woods near Taohua Village, feeling waves of fear. Although he had escaped, Taohua Village was far from the town. If he were to walk, it would probably take him a whole day and night. Moreover, Shuang'er had hardly left the house and didn't even know everyone in Taohua Village, so how could he get to the town?
The early spring night was still freezing cold, and Jiang Cheng wrapped himself tightly in his patched linen clothes, not knowing what to do.
He escaped, but his future fate became even more uncertain.
"Awooo——" A wolf's howl pulled Jiang Cheng out of his thoughts. There was a wolf!
Jiang Cheng heard from the elders in the village that Taohua Village is backed by a mountain range with many wild animals. Many years ago, someone went into the mountain to hunt out of arrogance and never came back.
Jiang Cheng listened to the wolf howls one after another, not knowing what to do. He could only walk helplessly in the woods, hoping to find a place to take shelter.
Jiang Cheng was walking in the woods when he suddenly saw a fenced-off wooden house in front of him. He hurried over, walked to the door and knocked a few times.
"Is anyone there?" Jiang Cheng knocked a few times, but the courtyard was pitch black and there was no movement.
The wolf howls seemed to be even louder at this moment, making people panic. Jiang Cheng didn't care about anything else and pushed open the wooden door and went in.
"Sorry to bother you." Jiang Cheng said sorry softly as he walked. Driven by fear, he finally reached the front of the wooden house.
Jiang Cheng knocked a few times, and seeing no one was there, he pushed the door open and went in. There was a bed, a table, and basic living utensils in the room, but no one was there, and there was a thin layer of dust on the table, it felt like no one had been there for a while.
Jiang Cheng breathed a sigh of relief. It was best if no one was there. He wondered where the owner of the cabin had gone. He wondered if he had been eaten by a wolf. Thinking of this, Jiang Cheng grew even more frightened. He curled up, got into bed, and fell into an uneasy sleep.
Let’s leave tomorrow!
