Chapter 2 The Scoundrel

On the day of Jiang Caiyun's wedding, Chen Mei got up early and went to Jiang Cheng's room. When she opened the door, she found that there was no one in the room. Only a window that she had never known was open. It was obvious that Jiang Cheng had run away in the middle of the night.

"Jiang Maocai! Jiang Maocai! That little bastard Jiang Cheng ran away!" Chen Mei panicked when she saw the empty house, and quickly ran to the main house to wake Jiang Maocai up.

"What?" Jiang Maocai was confused by Chen Mei's slap.

"Useless thing! Your son ran away!" Chen Mei was furious when she saw Jiang Maocai's dazed look. "How dare Jiang Cheng, that little bitch, run away? I raised him for so many years, but he's still an ungrateful person!"

Jiang Caiyun was woken up by her mother early in the morning and walked out of the house. As soon as Chen Mei saw her daughter, she rushed over.

"My daughter! What should I do? I can't push you into the fire pit!" Chen Mei hugged her daughter and kept scolding her.

Jiang Caiyun listened to her mother's incoherent talk and realized that Jiang Cheng had run away. He didn't want to marry for someone else, so he ran away!

"Mom, what should I do? I don't want to marry Song Tingzhi!" Jiang Caiyun usually thought that Jiang Cheng would protect her and nothing would happen. But now that disaster was imminent, she panicked.

"Don't be afraid! We'll have a while! Mom will find a way!" Chen Mei looked at her daughter's heartbroken expression, and she loathed Jiang Cheng even more, wishing she could tear him into pieces. "By the way, you need to leave now. Let your father take you to your second uncle's house. Cover your head and leave now!"

Chen Mei didn't care about anything else and pushed Jiang Caiyun out of the house. They had to leave quickly before dawn!

"Jiang Maocai! Take Caiyun away!"

"Then what are you going to do?" Jiang Maocai put on his clothes and walked out.

"I'm fine! As long as Caiyun doesn't marry him! I'm a woman, I don't believe the Song family will do anything to me!" Chen Mei pushed her husband and daughter and asked them to set off quickly.

At the time of Si, the sounds of gongs and drums welcoming the bride resounded throughout Taohua Village. Every household came out to take a look, and the little kids even ran directly to the wedding procession to ask for food. After all, apart from the festivals, there was only delicious food at this time every year.

Soon, the wedding procession arrived at the Jiang family's door. Matchmaker Wang Da Niang knocked on the door and said, "The groom is here to pick up his new bride! Open the door quickly!"

"Come in." Chen Mei welcomed Aunt Wang and Song Tingzhi in, and left the rest outside.

"Ms. Jiang, where is your daughter? Let her out quickly. It will be unlucky if the auspicious time is missed." Aunt Wang waved her hand with the silk cloth and sat on the stool.

Song Tingzhi was wearing a bright red groom's suit. He had a sturdy figure and a handsome appearance. He didn't look like a farmer's boy at all. There was a scar between his eyebrows, which might have been got during a hunting trip. He looked a bit fierce, which was in line with his identity as a hunter and butcher.

"Alas..." Chen Mei wiped the corners of her eyes with her sleeves. "I feel sad just talking about this. Yesterday, Caiyun and her father went to her second uncle's house. They thought they were going to get married today, so they asked her second uncle to come home to share in the good fortune. Unexpectedly, she caught a cold on the way. Aunt Wang, you know Caiyun. She has been spoiled by me since she was a child. She is in poor health. This illness means she won't be able to come back."

"Yes, yes...but your daughter Jiang is getting married today. This was arranged with the Song family years ago. What...are you doing? There are so many people watching outside." Aunt Wang agreed at first, then suddenly reacted and glanced at Song Tingzhi.

This is because you don’t want your daughter to marry him!

"Aunt Chen, my family gave the betrothal gifts years ago. Now that the bride is gone, you have to give our Song family an explanation." Song Tingzhi is not a fool. Seeing Chen Mei like this, he knows in his heart that she just doesn't want to get married because her father is sick and the family is burdened with heavy responsibilities.

Although he was not willing to get married now and was just following his parents' orders, he had to take back the betrothal gift his family had given.

"Xiao Song, although this betrothal gift was given before the New Year, our family can't afford it now! Why not give it to your family later?"

"Aunt Shen, either give it to the person or return the betrothal gift today. Otherwise, we'll let everyone judge." Song Tingzhi's voice suddenly dropped when he heard this. If he didn't return it today, he might not be able to return it in the future.

"What do you mean? We won't steal the money!" Chen Mei cursed, "I already said we don't have any money!"

"Aunt, please give me some face now. If it doesn't work, we can go to the county government office to seek justice." Song Tingzhi's face suddenly darkened, and he said in a rough voice, "Either you pay me back today, or I will move all the things in this house out!"

"You! How dare you!" Chen Mei didn't expect this to happen. She stood up and pointed at Song Tingzhi's nose and cursed.

"See if I dare!"

"Alright, alright, calm down." Aunt Wang saw that the two were about to fight and hurried out to mediate. "Chen Mei, you too, actually accepted the betrothal gifts, but you don't want to marry your daughter off. How can this be? Besides, the Song family gave quite a bit of betrothal gifts back then!"

The Song family was determined to find a good girl for Song Tingzhi, and after much searching, they decided that Jiang Caiyun was the most suitable. As for a boy, the probability of a boy getting pregnant was lower, so most families preferred girls. The betrothal gift to the Jiang family was ten taels of silver, plus some fabrics and furniture, which shows how determined the Song family was.

"Auntie Wang, it's not that I don't want to give it to you, it's just that I can't take it out now." Chen Mei gave most of the money to her younger brother Shen Song. There is no money left at home now!

"Then I'll ask my brother to move the things." As long as all the things were moved away and then sold, we could get some money back, and that would be enough to pay for Dad's medicine.

"you!"
