Chapter 2 The Scoundrel

"Sister Chen, are you really going to let the boy from the Song family move all the things in the house? Wouldn't that make the whole village laugh at you? In my opinion, you should just return the betrothal gifts, and the two families should part ways and live their own lives from now on." Aunt Wang advised again.

Chen Mei thought about it and decided it was okay. "I only have eight taels right now, so I can only give you this much. And don't even think about taking anything from the house!"

"Okay." Song Tingzhi nodded. At least he got back eight taels of silver, which was enough money for his father's medicine.

After taking the silver, Song Tingzhi hurried back regardless of other people's comments.

"Tingzhi, why did you come back alone? Where is your bride?" As soon as Song Tingzhi arrived home, his mother Xu Sanniang came to greet him.

After Song Tingzhi briefly told his mother what had happened today, he gave the silver to Xu Sanniang and said, "Mom, it's okay. I'll go up the mountain tonight. Although the money for Dad's medicine is enough now, there will be more later. I'll go hunt some game and sell it back."

"It's your parents who have delayed you." Xu Sanniang touched the corners of her eyes sadly, not knowing what to say for a moment.

"Mom, this only means that Miss Jiang and I are not destined to be together. I can't blame anyone else." Song Tingzhi looked at his mother, not knowing what to say to comfort her.

"Brother!" "Brother." Song Tingzhi's sister Song Qian and brother Song Yu walked out of the house.

"Brother! Where's the new sister-in-law?" Song Yu blinked, hugged his brother's legs, and looked at his brother. Song Qian also looked at him, but she was old and could not get close to her brother so recklessly.

"We'll have a new sister-in-law soon." Song Tingzhi squatted down and touched Song Yu's head, then said to him, "My eldest brother is going hunting in the mountains tonight. You guys have to listen to mother at home, okay?"

"Um!"

Xu Sanniang wiped her tears and said, "Tingzhi, be careful, don't get hurt."

"I understand, mother."

On the mountain...

Jiang Cheng slept an uneasy but peaceful night in the cabin. He couldn't see anything during the night. Now that it was daytime, Jiang Cheng looked at the messy furnishings in the house and decided to clean it up as a reward for staying overnight.

Jiang Cheng folded the quilt, wiped the dust off the table, and put the stools in order before going out. He found that the situation outside was even worse, sighed, picked up the broom and continued to clean.

He first scooped out the leaves floating in the water tank, and then covered it with a lid; then he went to the wooden rack, placed the dustpans on it one by one, and wiped off the dust; then he went to the small room next door to wash the dishes and chopsticks again, placed them one by one, and washed the rags again. After everything was done, he went out.

After Jiang Cheng finished cleaning up, he realized it was already noon. He was done with his work and felt hungry. He walked back to the house and took out the small cloth bag he had brought with him. Inside was a few multi-grain cakes. Although it was empty, it was enough to fill his stomach.

After finishing a piece of multi-grain cake, Jiang Cheng was full. He sat on the bed, but he didn't know where to go.

The world is so big, but I have no place to stay.

Jiang Cheng's tears streamed down his cheeks as he thought about this. Although he had escaped from the Jiang family, he had no place to live and no means of livelihood. As a young man, without anyone to rely on, it was difficult for him to survive in this world.

Jiang Cheng was in the house lamenting about life and thinking about his future, and he didn't notice that the sky outside was gradually getting dark.

After Song Tingzhi settled the house, he went to see his father lying in bed. He found that his complexion had improved a lot, so he packed up the things he needed and went up the mountain.

Song Tingzhi walked for half an hour and picked up a wild rabbit for dinner. He carried the rabbit all the way back to his wooden house on the mountain.

But as soon as he reached the door, Song Tingzhi stopped and carefully observed the furnishings of his courtyard.

He remembered the water jar was uncovered when he left, and he clearly remembered the dustpan on the wooden rack being left haphazardly. On weekdays, if Song Tingzhi finished hunting early, he would return home. If it was too late, he would sleep here and return the next day. So for Song Tingzhi, the cabin on the mountain was just a place to sleep, so much so that he didn't usually pay much attention to cleaning it. But now the water jar was covered and the dustpan was neatly arranged.

Is there a thief in the house?

Song Tingzhi frowned, quietly pushed open the door and walked in. He stopped at the door and heard faint crying sounds.

"Who's in there?"
