Chapter 183 I Can't Live Without You

Inside the Imperial Household Department, only the eunuchs' thin voices kept ringing out, making Mo Jingnian's eardrums vibrate. In his panic, he looked at the old man who was surrounded by his entourage. At that moment, the old man seemed to sense his prying and immediately gave him a sinister look, a half-smile on his face.

"Heh... So you're that young scholar who was brought into the palace by the Empress?"

"That's right..."

"Young scholar, come with me." Suddenly, a cold voice came from behind. Mo Jingnian turned his thoughts and followed the old man out of the gate of the Imperial Household Department with extreme restraint.

Subsequently, before anyone could inform the emperor, the news had already spread throughout the palace.

As night deepened, the candlelight from the imperial study flickered out the window, and on the smooth stone floor, a tall, slender shadow stood before the window.

A gentle breeze drifted in through the half-closed window, casting the flickering candlelight in the warm pavilion. It illuminated Mu Beichen, making him appear dashing and elegant. With a raised eyebrow, his dark robe danced gracefully alongside the jade beaded curtain, creating a dreamlike scene.

"Little Qian'er, I can't live without you..."

A clear, slightly chilly voice, carrying a hint of worry, suddenly echoed in the empty room, breaking the stillness of the night.

After a long silence, all that answered him was the cool breeze. At that moment, he was the only one in the entire imperial study talking to himself.

He clenched the letter in his right palm, his short breaths causing his body to tremble slightly. After hesitating for a long time, he had no choice but to turn around. His gaze shifted slightly and finally landed on the mountain of red annotations on the desk, his eyes filled with complex emotions.

With his long, slender, and fair fingers, Mu Beichen gently turned the pages of imperial edicts. The words of the ministers advising him to depose the empress were particularly glaring. Mu Beichen thought about how, in the month since he entered the palace and ascended the throne, people in the court had been submitting memorials with similar content. His thoughts were in turmoil and he could not express them in words.

He walked straight through a beaded curtain, the beads jingling behind him. Before Mu Beichen could even touch the door, several chaotic footsteps suddenly came from outside.

The moment the knock sounded, Mu Beichen pushed the door open, glanced up, and saw a young eunuch staggering and falling to the ground in fright. His voice was calm and indifferent as he asked, "What is it?"

After a slight hesitation, the young eunuch noticed the other's indifferent gaze and quickly straightened his posture and knelt down. "Your Majesty, news has recently come from Fengyi Palace that the Empress, due to her irritable mood, bestowed all the precious treasures presented as tribute from foreign lands upon us servants and even burned Your Majesty's calligraphy..." Before he could finish speaking, the man before him had already strolled outside the door, his tall figure standing under the bright moonlight, his robes fluttering in the evening breeze.

"Fine, if this can bring peace to the harem, then let her do whatever she wants." Mu Beichen sighed, his deep voice filled with helplessness: "If it's not enough to squander, then move some things from the treasury over as well."

In his panic, the young eunuch slightly raised his head. Moonlight slanted across a corner of the palace wall, and Mu Beichen's figure gradually disappeared into the night. He hesitated for a moment, then quickly added, "But Your Majesty, the Empress brought back a man of unknown origin yesterday, and he is currently in the palace..."

The voice, though not loud, pierced Mu Beichen's eardrums like a thunderclap. He turned around abruptly, the flower bushes swaying as his black robes brushed against them.

In a moment of astonishment, he turned around and slammed his palm down hard. A large patch of flowers by the roadside instantly collapsed, the blossoms and leaves falling and rustling softly.

"What man?"
