Chapter 52 The most beautiful thing about rainy days is not rainy days.
Time seems to pass in the blink of an eye; before you know it, another day has gone by.
Back on the desolate planet, time seemed to drag on endlessly, an almost unbearable ordeal. But in Luofu, it felt incredibly short. Perhaps happiness can swallow up the unpleasant memories; she was almost forgetting the feeling of only being able to eat compressed food, and even those painful memories were slowly fading.
Or is it that she has a particularly strong ability to adapt? Just as I was thinking this, I was suddenly called out by Bai Xuan.
"Chen Mi, tell me what we need to pay attention to when the star rafts meet."
Shen Mi stood up, opened his notes, and answered fluently.
After listening, Bai Xuan nodded and gestured for Chen Mi to sit down: "That's very well said, but there's one thing I need everyone to remember: when you actually pilot your starship and interact with others, they won't give you time to flip through your notes."
After saying that, he gave Chen Mi a meaningful look.
Shen Mi lowered her head in embarrassment. She knew Bai Xuan was calling on her. Although she had answered the question, Bai Xuan was still unhappy with her daydreaming.
Knowing he was in the wrong, Shen Mi dared not let his mind wander any longer, and thus began to concentrate on the lesson.
Therefore, Shen Mi naturally did not expect that Dan Heng would suddenly appear, and that he would appear only twenty meters away from her.
—I'll wait for you after school not far from the gate.
When Shen Mi received this message, he was sitting in his room listening to Bai Xuan explain the important points of the Star Chariot.
Unlike the driving test in the real world, Xingcha needs to memorize many more regulations, and there are many things she doesn't understand.
As she was writing furiously, her pocket trembled, but since she was in class, Shen Mi ignored it. Besides, she had just been scolded for daydreaming, so she didn't dare to open it.
She only checked her phone properly during her free time.
When Danheng's profile picture appeared, her heart skipped a beat, then raced. She clicked on it impatiently, and after seeing what he said, all she could think about was seeing him as soon as possible.
I couldn't wait even half a minute longer. But there were still two classes left before school ended.
Unfortunately, it was the afternoon when I had my first test, which required specialized equipment. Shen Mi's desire to skip class was completely extinguished.
All she can do now is study hard for the exam and wait patiently.
Shen Mi picked up the book again and carefully reviewed the marked test points. He sat obediently in the chair and stared at the ten-line content on one page for more than ten minutes. Finally, he slumped on the table in despair and sighed heavily.
I can't concentrate on it, I really can't.
She was about to give up; her heart had already flown over the walls and was heading towards someone whose name she couldn't reveal.
After standing there in a daze for ten minutes, Bai Xuan finally led them to another room when the exam began.
Before entering the room, one must turn off their phone to prevent cheating. Shen Mi quickly sent a message to Dan Heng, briefly explaining the reason, then turned off the phone and put it in the storage box by the door.
The test began. Shen Mi typed his name, quickly scanned the questions, and kept his hands busy, thinking that he should finish quickly and leave.
I scanned through the questions one by one, and when I got to the middle part, I found myself getting into the swing of things, and before I knew it, I had lost track of time.
She only snapped out of her daze when she heard someone exclaim in surprise beside her.
"—It's raining!"
Shen Mi looked up at the window and saw that the sky was covered with dark clouds, the gray sky framed in a square shape, and the wind was blowing through the leaves, rustling softly. She was right next to the window, so close, yet she hadn't noticed anything.
Shen Mi pushed the door open a crack, and the wind, carrying rain, blew in, landing in specks on her face. The rain was icy cold, and Shen Mi's brows furrowed involuntarily.
...Danheng, did you bring an umbrella?
The seeds of worry quickly took root in her heart. The test questions became unfamiliar, like words she had never encountered before, and she gradually lost focus on them. Even though she knew that Dan Heng wouldn't be foolish enough to stand somewhere and let the rain soak her, Chen Mi's mind was still filled with wild thoughts.
Fortunately, there were only ten questions left. Shen Mi quickly finished them and submitted them immediately. Her score was 99 points. She only got one question wrong. According to the standards of the Immortal Ship Star Chariot driving test, as long as you score more than 90 points, you are considered qualified. That means she can move on to the next stage.
But at this moment, Shen Mi felt no joy at passing through; she just wanted to leave quickly so as not to keep Dan Heng waiting.
Bai Xuan was sitting at the front, supervising the remaining people. From the very beginning, he had been watching Shen Mi, who looked very serious as if something bad had happened. Bai Xuan suddenly had a bad feeling. Could it be that he hadn't passed?
To be honest, among these five or six trainees, he was most optimistic about Shen Mi, not only because of Jing Yuan, but also because she did have some talent in piloting the Star Chariot.
If you can't even pass the first hurdle, no matter how talented you are, it's useless. But this is just a test, so as long as everything goes well on the actual exam day, it's fine.
He still had complete confidence in Shen Mi.
As Shen Mi walked over looking dejected, Bai Xuan was about to say something to comfort her when she heard her say, "Ninety-nine points."
Ninety-nine points? Bai Xuan had barely realized it and before she could even feel happy, she heard her say, "Master, I have something urgent to attend to. Can I leave now?"
Although Bai Xuan had seen many ups and downs and should have remained calm upon hearing this number, the joy of not having misjudged the person still overwhelmed her.
Bai Xuan agreed without hesitation: "Okay."
As soon as he finished speaking, Shen Mi, having received approval, plunged headfirst into the rain without looking back.
Bai Xuan was stroking his beard, in a state of "I knew I hadn't misjudged him," when he saw Shen Mi rushing into the heavy rain alone. He hurriedly shouted from behind, "There's an umbrella at the door!"
However, Shen Mi ran too fast, and Bai Xuan was unsure whether she had heard her.
The fine, dense rain pattered on her, instantly turning her light pink solid-color top into a gray-pink polka dot pattern.
When she first came out, the rain wasn't too heavy. She heard Bai Xuan calling from behind. She hesitated for half a second, then decisively gave up looking for an umbrella and turned to run towards the door. But in that instant, the sky seemed to open up, and water poured down continuously. The drizzle quickly became dense and poured down.
As the rain fell from the eaves, Shen Mi tried to contact Dan Heng to ask where he was. He searched his entire body but couldn't find his phone. Only then did he realize that he had left it in the storage box in his haste to come out.
After hesitating for a moment, Shen Mi decided to brave the heavy rain and rush back to get it.
A loud clap of thunder sounded in her ear, as if waking her up and pulling her out of her daze, as if saying, "Why are you running outside in this heavy rain?"
Right now, the streets and alleys are gloomy, dark clouds loom over the city, and the entire Luofu area is shrouded in a gray curtain.
Large raindrops pounded on the eaves, leaves, and floor tiles, creating a chaotic yet unified rhythm, like a sudden symphony.
Many pedestrians hurriedly opened their umbrellas on the road. Some people did not have time to dodge and decisively chose to hide under the eaves of a shop, just like Chen Mi. The wet corners of their clothes clung to their legs, and their steps became hurried.
The street vendors hurriedly gathered up their tarpaulins, and the sizzling oil in the pans hissed as the rainwater splashed through the puddles. Car wheels drove through the water, kicking up waves that rippled through the air like ink wash paintings before crashing down, blurring the paper and obscuring the view ahead.
Rainwater slid down the eaves, meandering through the cracks in the street, carrying away dust, fallen leaves, and scraps of paper, washing away the dirt and creating a shallow stream. The air was damp, cold, and crisp, mixed with the smell of earth and rain; the stark contrast of the crispness evoked memories of a dry evening deep in my mind.
At that moment, right behind Shen Mi stood a middle-aged man with a full beard who looked to be in his early thirties, staring intently at Shen Mi, who was less than a meter away from him.
But if you look closely, his fair and delicate skin, the natural blush at the corners of his eyes, and his upright posture make him look nothing like an "uncle."
Several minutes earlier, Dan Heng had seen Shen Mi running out of the door from across the street. He instinctively wanted to call out to her, but for some reason, the words fell heavily back down his throat.
His gaze was fixed on her figure, and he followed closely behind her, even through the traffic blocking their path, watching her look around curiously, the drizzle blooming like tiny flowers on her body.
My own heart, too, quietly blossomed.
As he walked through the eaves of the street, Dan Heng opened his umbrella and slowed his pace. The gentle breeze and sweet rain seemed to obey his command, turning into a torrential downpour the moment he opened the umbrella.
Watching her in the heavy rain, she looked like a fleeing little animal, nimbly slipping into shelter, then like a hamster that had lost its pine cone, frantically searching its pockets, as if it had even circled around in a panic.
Dan Heng chuckled and quickened his pace. He looked up at the umbrella in his hand, which was trembling from the rain. As soon as his gaze returned to that direction, he saw the pink figure, who seemed to be gathering her strength to rush out.
Dan Heng exclaimed in surprise. The next second, thunder roared as if warning him. Shen Mi stopped and stood obediently under the eaves.
Dan Heng breathed a sigh of relief and quickened his pace considerably. He strode across the crowd and came up behind Chen Mi.
Rain pattered from the eaves, and rain fell in torrents outside the eaves; the sound of the dripping rain seemed to echo the melody of his heart at that moment, so intense, so loud…
Seeing her only two meters away from him, Danheng felt a surge of emotions, as if a thousand thoughts were about to spill from his mouth.
How have you been lately?
Have you encountered any unhappy things?
How is your stay in Luofu? Do you like it here? Have you been to Lin Yuan Realm? That's my hometown.
Are you getting used to staying at Jingyuan's house?
I saw everything you sent me, I didn't mean to ignore you...
Many times, when I pick up my phone and see the messages you sent me, I think of your face and your smile, as if they are deeply engraved in my mind.
I'm doing well, don't worry. This is what I most want to say, but also what I'm afraid to say. I'm afraid that if I reply, you'll start chatting with me about everything under the sun, telling me about every place in Luofu that makes you happy.
This peaceful and stable life is something I cannot give you. Perhaps forever, I am destined to be a wanderer.
A bitter feeling welled up in Danheng's heart, as if he had drunk a whole pot of berberine in one gulp.
But when I saw her, it felt like everything was alright.
He raised his hand and patted the person in front of him on the shoulder. His warm palm briefly touched the damp clothes, startling the person in front of him. She then turned her head and saw the familiar red at the corner of his eye. Her heart was pounding so hard it felt like it was going to jump out of her chest.
"Chen Mi, it's been a long time."
Dan Heng smiled as he spoke, his thick fake beard obscuring most of his smile, but the upward curve of his lips was still visible in silence.
