Chapter 10 We finally arrived at the educated youth settlement

Xie Yan, who was suspected of being ill, was also feeling quite unwell. He wiped the sweat from his forehead and smiled at Yu Yuehe, who was helping him with his luggage, saying, "Brother, thanks! I'm fine, I can still manage!"

What else can he say besides that he can persevere?

He'd seen plenty of these kinds of stories about educated youth going to the countryside and ending up in villages; they were common in novels. There were always people who couldn't hold out and wanted to ride in an oxcart, only to be scolded by the cart driver or other villagers. He didn't want to be scolded! Besides, he didn't want to leave a bad impression on others right after arriving!

How is he supposed to face people in this village after this?!

Xie Yan was inwardly crying, but outwardly smiling!

Seeing Xie Yan's expression, Yu Yuehe didn't say anything more and turned to move her luggage!

Seeing that Yuehe was finally no longer looking at him, Xie Yan breathed a sigh of relief!

He was really exhausted. He had been relying on water to get through the past two days on the train and hadn't eaten much. Plus, he was carsick the whole way, and now all he wanted to do was find a place to sleep.

If Yu Yuehe had kept an eye on him any longer, Xie Yan might not have been able to hold on!

The thought of having to walk a long way later made his legs tremble, and he silently took out two White Rabbit milk candies from his pocket (actually, from his spatial storage) and put them in his mouth.

He needs to conserve his energy, otherwise he definitely won't be able to reach the stream team later.

The sweet, milky aroma filled her mouth. Whether it was psychological or not, Xie Yan felt as if she had gained some strength, and her heart, which had been pounding in her chest, seemed to have calmed down!

Sure enough, the road conditions were exactly as Xie Yan had imagined: a bumpy, potholed road, winding through one mountain after another, making Xie Yan almost despair. When would they finally arrive? This mountain road felt longer than his life!

Xie Yan felt like his throat was on fire! His feet hurt so much that he didn't dare to step on the ground. He was really walking with one deep and one shallow step. He was only able to keep going because of his willpower.

When people are extremely tired, their brains stop thinking. If you gave Xie Yan a pillow right now, he could fall asleep on the spot!

Looking at the group of people dawdling along, especially that pretty boy, he was a disgrace to men. His unsteady gait was worse than that of the female educated youth! Yu Yuehe shook his head helplessly and said gruffly, "Let's rest here for a while before we go!"

Yu Yuehe looked away, feeling incredibly annoyed. What a bunch of young masters and misses! They've had to rest so many times along the way!

Judging from the current situation, it's uncertain whether we'll even reach the village by dark. Sigh! What sins did he commit to deserve being the one to fetch people? In this terrible state, when will we ever get back to the village?

The words "rest on the spot" floated into Xie Yan's ears like celestial music. He sat down directly on the ground, supporting himself with his hands, and breathed heavily!

At this moment, Xie Yan didn't care about his image at all. He didn't care about the dirt on the ground! All he wanted to do was rest!

The best thing would be to stay here tonight, rest for the night, and leave tomorrow!

Wang Hongmei and the other two found a relatively clean place to sit down. They were all exhausted. Yuzhen, the youngest of them, was only fifteen years old, and her eyes were red, clearly from secretly wiping away tears.

But the worst off was Wang Hongmei. She was wearing small leather shoes with a slight heel, and her feet were in excruciating pain. She felt that her feet must have broken open, and any slight movement made her wince in pain. She didn't dare to move at all!

Xie Yan stuffed two more White Rabbit candies into his mouth. Just as he caught his breath, he heard Yu Yuehe's emotionless voice, "Alright, let's go. If we don't leave now, we'll have to walk in the dark!"

It's like a death knell!

Xie Yan struggled to his feet, and the moment his foot touched the ground, he gasped in pain. It hurt so much! He took a couple of slow steps before he got used to it.

Xie Yan had adapted, but Wang Hongmei, who was in front of her, wouldn't have it. Her feet were blistered and painful with every movement. Her eyes were red as she shouted, "When are we finally going to get there?! We've climbed over one mountain after another, why do you all live so far away?! Knowing it's far, why can't you take one more bus?! Are you deliberately bullying us educated youth?!"

Yu Yuehe's face darkened instantly, and she looked coldly at Wang Hongmei, "If you can't even handle this little bit of hardship, then don't come to the countryside. Our conditions in the countryside are what they are, and you still complain about how far we live? If we didn't live on the mountain, clearing land and farming, what would you eat in the city? Food?"

"You should be grateful that I didn't make you carry your luggage back yourself, and I even found another car to take you. Why didn't you suggest finding a sedan chair to carry you back!"

"Since you're so spoiled, you should stay in your city and be a proper young lady. What are you doing in our countryside!"

Wang Hongmei was, after all, a girl, and one who had been pampered and spoiled before. She was so badly criticized by Yu Yuehe that she burst into tears!

Yu Yuehe was even more annoyed now. He was already irritable because he was hungry at mealtime, and now he had to deal with this bunch of troublemakers. It was bad enough that they were so annoying, but they started crying as soon as he said something! How much could he have walked in the time it took to cry like that! It was so annoying! When was he going to get to eat today?!

Several girls began to comfort Wang Hongmei. Xie Yan looked at the endless road and the setting sun, and winked at Gu Bin, "Hurry up and resolve this, it's getting dark!"

Gu Bin was exhausted and hungry at the moment, and just wanted to get to the village as soon as possible. Although he was also dissatisfied with what Yuehe said, he had to bow his head when he was under someone else's roof. He had just arrived and did not want to leave others with the impression that he was a troublesome educated youth. After all, he did not know how long he would stay here!

He saw Xie Yan's actions and realized it was getting dark. He stepped forward, pulled Wang Hongmei a few steps away, and whispered, "Stop crying! Look at the sky! If we don't leave now, we'll have to travel in the dark. We're in the mountains; who knows what might happen at night? I've heard there are wild boars, wolves, and other ferocious beasts in these mountains!"

Upon hearing the words "mountains," "night," and "wild beasts," Wang Hongmei trembled with fear and dared not cry.

He stammered, "Really? Really?"

Gu Bin nodded firmly.

Wang Hongmei glanced at the sky, sobbing slightly. It was indeed getting late, so she quickly nodded obediently. She knew the difference between being tired and dying.

Seeing that things had quieted down, Xie Yan said to Yu Yuehe, "Brother Dahe, let's go! It's getting late!" Yu Yuehe said that everyone called him Brother Dahe.

Yu Yuehe nodded with a gloomy expression, drove the oxcart away, not caring whether the people behind him could keep up!

Seeing the ox panting heavily from exhaustion, he felt heartbroken.

His ox is really exhausted today, pulling so much stuff! I'll definitely ask my second uncle to give it a couple more handfuls of beans when we get back!

The rest of the journey was eerily quiet. Not a single person uttered a sound. Everyone held their breath and followed the oxcart forward!
