Chapter 9 A Desperate Farewell

He spoke, revealing a set of bright white teeth, and looked very serious! He counted the number of people again. After confirming that everything was correct, he led them outside.

The forty of them followed the commune leader, who was like a sheep, and started riding a bus. The smell on the bus was absolutely awful! The swaying bus made Xie Yan's motion sickness even worse, and his face turned as pale as paper. Luckily, he managed to get a window seat, with his entire head sticking out of the window.

Thanks to the cool breeze outside, Xie Yan managed to suppress the urge to vomit!

Looking at the pedestrians and trees rushing by outside, Xie Yan couldn't help but feel fortunate that it was the 1970s and there were no cars on the street. Otherwise, he would have been courting death!

As Xie Yan was lost in thought, he heard someone vomit in the car. His face turned pale, his scalp tingled, and he thought to himself, "It's over! It's over!"

Sure enough, Xie Yan started feeling nauseous again! He clenched his fists tightly, desperately suppressing the feeling, telling himself he couldn't throw up! Absolutely not! Xie Yan, you have to be strong, just a little longer, we'll be there! We'll be there soon~

If he really threw up, Xie Yan believed he would be absolutely disgusted to death!

This is no exaggeration. Xie Yan is a person with a strange obsession with cleanliness. When he was in school, one of his classmates had a cold and fever and vomited right there in the classroom!

All the other students ran to comfort the student with the cold, but Xie Yan, just by smelling that odor, turned and ran outside!

It's not that he's cold-hearted.

Xie Yan went to the big tree outside the classroom and started gagging. She only stopped when she was completely exhausted, and tears streamed down her face.

Later, Xie Yan started avoiding that spot. It wasn't that he was being difficult; just thinking about that scene made him feel nauseous and want to vomit!

Once, he caught a cold and was lying at home when he suddenly felt like vomiting. Xie Yan ran outside as fast as he could, and only started vomiting when he got to the toilet. That was definitely the fastest Xie Yan had ever run in his life!

After vomiting, he washed himself under the tap for a long time before he felt a little better! The unpleasant smell on his body was gone.

After the bus arrived at its destination and stopped, Xie Yan quickly ran off the bus, put down his luggage, and started vomiting while hugging a big tree next to him. Fortunately, he hadn't eaten much on the way, and he dry-heaved for a long time without vomiting anything!

Having shared the hardships of the train journey with Gu Bin, seeing Xie Yan looking so uncomfortable, Gu Bin came over and patted Xie Yan's back. "Are you alright? Do you want some water? I have some boiled water here!"

Xie Yan waved his hand weakly, unable to speak. He leaned against a big tree and rested for a while before recovering.

Xie Yan looked at the azure sky and really wanted to cry! For the first eighteen years of his life, he lived a peaceful and law-abiding life. He was a good person! He helped old ladies cross the street, helped children carry their things, and did many good deeds. Why did he have to get carsick?!

What did he do wrong? Why is he being punished like this?

Once everyone had rested and recovered, the person in charge who brought them there divided them up again, assigning them to brigades under the commune. Each brigade had five people, and the Big Stone Commune had eight brigades. In addition to Xie Yan and Gu Bin, there were three women on Xie Yan's side.

Zhang Hua was assigned to another brigade, while Xie Yan, Gu Bin, and three other women were assigned to Xiliu Brigade. Xiliu Brigade was said to be named after a stream that ran through the village.

The person who came to pick them up from the Xiliu Brigade was Yu Yuehe, the brigade leader's nephew.

When Yu Yuehe saw that all the educated youth who came this time were listless and not energetic at all, they were obviously not cut out for work. There were even three female educated youths among them. He sighed deeply!

Yu Yuehe looked down on these educated youths. Not only were they bad at their work, but they also caused a lot of trouble! They complained about everything in their village, as if they, as city people, were superior. It was really annoying!

Moreover, they only came once a year, and the brigade's grain was not enough for the brigade itself, so they had to share it with the educated youth. The villagers had a lot of complaints about the educated youth.

After all, nobody likes someone who looks down on others!

This also led to a situation where no one was willing to take on the job of educated youth sent to the countryside.

If it weren't for his uncle being the brigade leader, he wouldn't have wanted to come and pick up these educated youth! Picking up these educated youth only earns six work points, while he could earn at least eight work points for a day's work!

Yu Yuehe took a roll call to confirm that all the educated youth assigned to their brigade were here, and then led them outside.

They didn't care whether they could keep up or not.

Xie Yan only learned the names of the other people when the roll call was being taken. The female educated youth with long braids was called Wang Hongmei, and the short-haired, baby-faced girl was called Yuzhen. When Xie Yan heard Yuzhen, he glanced at the baby-faced female educated youth in surprise.

This name sounds like the name of a female protagonist in a novel! Or maybe it's from a novel she read in her past life, about the love between her grandparents and their grandparents, and her grandmother's name was Yuzhen or something like that! There was also a tall and thin female educated youth named Shen Lijuan.

These women were carrying quite a lot of things, and Gu Bin, in a very gentlemanly manner, helped Yu Zhen, who had the most luggage, carry a large bag.

Yuzhen, whose burden had been greatly relieved, quickly thanked Gu Bin.

The remaining two female educated youths also had a lot of luggage. They both looked at Xie Yan, but Xie Yan picked up his things and left without even glancing at them.

Wang Hongmei stomped her foot angrily and muttered under her breath, "What a clueless person." In her opinion, she was the prettiest among them, and Xie Yan would definitely help her. She was very popular at school, and many people would rush to help her carry things.

This thank-you banquet is clearly the kind of thing that will never find a wife!

Gu Bin, who was passing by, overheard this and laughed, saying, "Did you see his pale face? We came together. He didn't eat much on the train, and you still want him to help you carry things? Aren't you afraid he'll collapse and won't be able to get up? Then you'll have to take him to the hospital!"

"It might cost a lot of money!"

Wang Hongmei glared at Gu Bin, then angrily dragged her luggage away.

This person is so annoying. Not only did he not help me with my luggage, but he also made sarcastic remarks.

Hmph! If she didn't have so much stuff, she wouldn't have even considered asking Xie Yan, that sickly-looking guy, for help!

Shen Lijuan glanced at Wang Hongmei, who was struggling to move forward, and said nothing, silently quickening her pace.

Xie Yan, who had already reached the oxcart, shakily placed his luggage on it. Yu Yuehe, seeing his struggle, hesitated for a moment but couldn't resist. She snatched the luggage from his hands and put it on the oxcart, asking, "Can you even keep going with this body?"

After speaking, she looked Xie Yan up and down, noticing his pale face and sweat-drenched forehead, and wondered if he was ill. The luggage wasn't heavy at all! How come it weighed hundreds of pounds in his hands?
