Chapter 176 One Hundred and Seventy-Six

After having breakfast at Cao's house, Xu Jiang felt refreshed both physically and mentally, and full of energy.

Uncle Cao and Aunt Cao packed up their things and brought Lu Zhen and Xu Jiang to the bookstore.

Zeng Zhui also arrived and was asking Guards Xue and Zhu about what happened yesterday.

As soon as Xu Jiang saw him, she knew that Master Lin also knew about it.

As she helped Aunt Cao get out of the car, she called out, "Wenfeng is here."

Lu Zhen, who was riding with Uncle Cao, waved at him and called out crisply, "Senior Brother."

Zeng rushed forward, lifted him off the horse, and carried him around twice before saying to Xu Jiang, "I heard there was a fire this morning, so the teacher asked me to come and take a look."

I think Lou Jing sent someone to inform him. It's good to know so that Master Lin can be more vigilant.

"I'm sorry to have worried you."

"I'm glad you're okay."

Zeng Zhui put down the dizzy Lu Zhen and greeted Uncle Cao and Aunt Cao.

Aunt Cao warmly took out steamed buns and distributed them to him and several guards. They took them without hesitation and started to eat them.

Xu Jiang asked Xue and Zhu, "Did anything happen last night?"

Guard Zhu shook his head, "No, it was quiet all night long."

Guard Xue said, "The situation is tense right now, no one dares to come and cause trouble."

"Thank you both for your hard work, but we dare not let our guard down yet. We will have to keep watch for a few more nights." Every failure makes one wiser, and Xu Jiang dared not take it lightly again.

He was just worried that they wouldn't be able to handle it, so he added, "Since Mr. Lou has sent someone else to accompany you, why don't you go back and rest, and come back before the market closes."

The two looked at each other and agreed.

They haven't been home for a long time.

Xu Jiang then said to Guard Zhu, "I've asked Shopkeeper Zhao in the West Market, and he's said Uncle Jackal is eating now. We can bring him back in a few days."

"That's good. Otherwise, I don't know how I'd explain this to its owner." Guard Zhu smiled. "It's done great service this time, but it's also suffered greatly. I'll have to reward it well when we bring it back."

Xu Jiang nodded, "Of course, a few large bones are definitely necessary."

After seeing the two off and arranging the carriages and horses, Xu Jiang took Uncle Cao and Aunt Cao to see the backyard.

When Aunt Cao saw that the donkey shed was burned down to only the frames, she couldn't help but scold the arsonist.

She was cursing when she saw Lu Zhen staring at her, so she stopped and said, "My dear, you are not allowed to learn this."

"Oh." Lu Zhen nodded.

Yin Yin couldn't help laughing.

Uncle Cao frowned and checked around, and when he saw that there was indeed no major damage, his expression relaxed a little.

"The inside and outside of the back wall and the walls of the carved room need to be repainted. The burned eaves don't need to be replaced; just apply tung oil to prevent decay and insect damage."

"good."

Uncle Cao shook the remaining pillars of the donkey shed and suggested, "The donkey shed has already burned down. Why not pull out the piles and rebuild it with stone bricks and green tiles? They'll be windproof, rainproof, non-flammable, and easy to clean."

She and Lou Yunchun had buried the pile themselves, and Xu Jiang was reluctant to abandon it. "Can these pillars be used as beams for the shed?"

After a careful inspection, Uncle Cao nodded and said, "It can still be used after scraping off the surface."

Xu Jiang said, "Then let's keep it as a beam."

"Yes, it can save some money."

The two of them drew up the dimensions of the donkey shed, then went into the bookstore to draw sketches and list materials. Aunt Cao couldn't sit still, so she helped Xu Jiang tidy up the yard, and Yin Yin and Lu Zhen also went to help.

Liang Mo arrived late. After exchanging a few pleasantries with Zeng Zhui, he sorted the books, arranged the shelves, and swept the floor as usual.

We can't let the work fail because of a small accident.

Xu Jiang saw that he was alone and asked, "Where is the donkey?"

"It was injured and it would be hard to find a place to take it, so I left it at home and will send it back when the donkey shed is repaired."

"This is really a case of a rat falling into a rice jar."

Liang Mo laughed when he heard this.

Uncle Cao put away the blueprints and the list of materials, then stood up and said to Xu Jiang, "I'll go to the East Market to find Xu San and have him buy all the materials."

Xu Jiang hurriedly untied her purse and took out five taels of silver and handed it to him. "Take this first. If it's not enough, come back to me."

"Okay." Uncle Cao accepted it and then asked, "Does the boss have a good start date?"

Zeng Zhui, who was just entering the room, overheard what was happening and continued, "The day after tomorrow will be fine."

Xu Jiang stood up and took out the almanac to check. It was indeed a good day. She asked curiously, "You still remember the date?"

"It wasn't me, it was Master Lin who looked at it. The school was just about to move." Zeng Zhui looked at Uncle Cao, "I also asked Uncle Cao to help look at it."

"Then let's do it the day after tomorrow." Master Lin thought the date would be good.

Uncle Cao nodded. "Okay, then we'll set it for the day after tomorrow. I'll have Xu San bring the materials over tomorrow."

After the matter was settled, Uncle Cao said goodbye to Aunt Cao and Lu Zhen, then went to the East Market to look for craftsmen.

After he left, Xu Jiang asked Zeng, "Why did the school change its door for no reason?"

Zeng Zhui was stunned for a moment before realizing that he had let the cat out of the bag again.

Xu Jiang noticed that he looked strange, so she asked in a low voice, "Did something happen?"

They were all shrewd people. When Zeng Zhui saw that he could no longer hide the truth, he had to confess.

"The teacher has impeached quite a few officials in the court these days, and those who hold grudges are secretly trying to trip us up and stir up trouble. The other day, someone got drunk and acted mad, trying to break into the school with an axe. Luckily, the guards stopped them, and no harm was done; they only managed to break down the door."

"Are Hong Chu and the teacher okay?" Xu Jiang's face was full of worry.

"It's all okay. The teacher wasn't here at the time, and I was guarding the little hoe, so no one could hurt her. Besides, she's a strong-willed person. When that man came to her house, she had oil burning in the pot. When the oil was poured in, the man was scalded and screamed, and he sobered up." After saying this, Zeng Zhui's face was full of pride.
