Chapter 7
"You...what did you say? Who?" Theresa's voice was clearly filled with disbelief and shock.
"Your granddaughter, her name is Ivory." David answered helplessly. He actually didn't want to let Theresa know that he had a daughter so early. After all, Theresa resolutely exiled herself from the United States, leaving the ten-year-old David alone to face the attacks of a huge family. He was resentful and hated her.
"Ivory? God, I have a granddaughter? How old is she? Who did you give birth to her with? I remember you were not married." Theresa continued to ask excitedly.
"She's five years old. Her mother is Chinese, a very nice person, and I'm going to marry her soon."
"Ivory needs brain surgery? What's wrong with her? What happened?" Theresa suddenly remembered what David had asked her for. She was an expert in brain surgery, so that meant that there was something wrong with little Ivory's brain and she needed surgery.
"Ivory was hit on the head by a bad classmate in kindergarten. She suffered a mild concussion and blood clots in her brain. The doctor suggested that I perform a craniotomy as soon as possible to remove the blood clots..." David explained.
"Oh my God, that kid is such a bad boy, so brutal. How could he hit his classmate on the head?" Theresa was indignant. Then she sighed and said to David, "I gave up the scalpel not entirely because of your father, but also because I injured the nerves in my hand in that accident. Now I can no longer perform such high-precision surgery. But I can recommend a doctor to you. He is a student of my mentor Mr. Bourne. His name is Strange. He is a rising star in neurosurgery. There will be no problem if you ask him to perform the surgery."
David was silent for a while, and said hoarsely to the other end of the phone: "Thank you...mum." Only when you become a parent will you know how difficult it is to be a parent, and only then will you understand your parents' good intentions. David could now understand the "cruel" Theresa.
Theresa burst into tears on the other end of the phone, covered her mouth tightly to prevent the sound of her crying from reaching the other end of the phone, and then suppressed her emotions and said softly, "You're welcome, David my baby."
David, my baby, was what Teresa called David when he was a child. When David suddenly heard this, he could hardly control his grief.
After hanging up the phone, Theresa still couldn't control the emotions surging in her heart, so she sat next to the phone and cried.
"Oh, dear Teresa, what's wrong with you?" A slightly fat woman walked in from outside, saw Teresa crying, and walked over quickly with concern.
"I'm fine, Dolores, I'm fine." Theresa shook the hand of this caring neighbor and smiled through her tears: "My son has forgiven me, and I have a lovely five-year-old granddaughter. I'm just so happy. Don't worry about me, Dolores."
Dolores and Theresa have been neighbors for so many years, so of course she knew some things about Theresa. Hearing Theresa say this, Dolores was very surprised and said, "Oh my God, congratulations, your granddaughter is amazing. Girls are more caring than boys."
"No, aren't your Ugo and Chris also good kids?" The favorite topic of conversation for middle-aged women is their own children, and they must praise them a lot. Dolores was indeed very happy.
David, thanks to Theresa's introduction, quickly booked a trip to the United States. Unfortunately, the case in which Fu Chanwei raped a disabled girl would soon go to trial, and Fu Chanwei could not leave at all, so this time David was the only one taking Ivory to the United States.
Originally, Grandma Fu was going to go too, but she had a heart disease and was not suitable for long-distance flights, so she did not go to the United States with us.
The night before departure, Chunxi was still in the hospital, and David and Chanwei were with her. They slept on a narrow single bed next to her. Fu Chanwei leaned tightly in David's arms and played with David's hand: "After Chunxi's surgery is over, I will come to the United States to find you. Let's go meet your mother." Fu Chanwei said.
David tilted his head slightly and looked at Fu Chanwei: "How do you know..."
Fu Chanwei smiled and said, "I heard you making a phone call in the fire escape that day. I thought it was your lover at first, but later I found out it was your mother."
David pinched Fu Chanwei's nose: "I don't have a lover, only you, oh, Ivory is half my lover."
Fu Chanwei gently hit David's arm: "Seriously, let me go to the United States to meet your mother once."
David curled his lips and said, "Teresa is not in the United States. She is in Portugal. She left the United States and moved to Portugal after my father had an accident. Her mother, my grandmother, is Portuguese."
"Then let's go to Portugal to meet your mother." Fu Chanwei still didn't give up. There must be some conflicts between David and Theresa. Fu Chanwei knew it, but she still hoped to meet David's closest family and get their recognition and blessings.
"Okay, after Ivory finishes the surgery, I'll take you two to see her." David agreed.
The two chatted and gradually fell asleep.
The next day, Fu Chanwei woke up early to prepare some things for Chunxi to go to the United States. David had already booked a private plane to take Chunxi to seek medical treatment. We have already made arrangements with the United States and found Dr. Strange, who was recommended by Theresa.
Doctor.Strange? It's really strange...
When Fu Chanwei was about to finish packing, Chunxi woke up, but after waking up she didn't look for her parents the first time. Instead, she sat on the bed in a daze.
Fu Chanwei was surprised. She walked over and sat beside the bed, hugging Chunxi's shoulders: "What's wrong, baby?"
Chunxi looked in the direction where her mother's voice came from with lifeless eyes, and was horrified to find that it was not because she woke up in the middle of the night and it was dark and she could not see, but that she really could not see anything. Chunxi was so frightened that she couldn't help but burst into tears: "Mom...Mom...Dad...I can't see, I can't see with my eyes."
As soon as David entered the ward, he heard the terrified cry. He walked over quickly and hugged Chunxi: "Baby, don't be afraid. It's okay. It's just that your eyes are tired and need to rest for a few days. Daddy promises you that everything will be fine soon."
After the doctor David called examined Chunxi, he sighed and said to David, "We have to hurry up. It seems that the blood clots have compressed the optic nerve. If we don't perform the surgery quickly, it may cause permanent damage to the child's vision."
Time was urgent, so David and Fu Chanwei discussed it and decided not to wait any longer and take the child on a plane to the United States for surgery immediately. Dr. Strange also explained the situation clearly so that the doctor could prepare in advance.
It was not Xiao Chunxi’s first time to take a plane, but long-distance flights were still very new to her. Unfortunately, she couldn’t see it for the time being. On the plane, David played various music for Chunxi and chatted with her. Since he couldn't see the food and couldn't eat himself, David got to experience the joy of feeding his child.
After arriving in New York, I immediately went to Dr. Strange's hospital. Theresa told me that Dr. Strange was a doctor with a very unique personality and great abilities, but he was also rather arrogant and could easily make people angry.
After Chunxi arrived, she quickly completed the required examinations and was pushed into the operating room. David was not allowed to go in and could only wait outside. Waiting anxiously.
Chunxi inside was also very scared. A young lady with a very nice and gentle voice pushed her in. She held her hand and told her not to be afraid, and then kept chatting with her. Chunxi also learned that the young lady's name was Rachel, and that she was the assistant of Dr. Strange, who would perform surgery on her.
"Why did you talk to her for so long? Anyway, she's going to have her brain opened soon." A man's voice came, and Chunxi sensitively recognized it as the voice of the male doctor.
"Brother Strange, thank you." Xiao Chunxi, who had changed her clothes and was lying on the operating table, said. Strange was stunned for a moment when he heard it: "Thank me for what?"
"Thank you for performing the surgery on me. My eyes will get better." Xiao Chunxi expressed her gratitude sincerely in her innocent voice.
"Okay..." Dr. Strange was rarely shy and then asked the anesthesiologist to give Xiao Chunxi anesthesia.
"She's really super cute, isn't she?" Rachel stood next to Strange who was organizing surgical equipment.
"And then?" Strange replied with pretended impatience.
"Then you should take the surgery more seriously and not be so casual like before," said Rachel, who would dance awkwardly while performing high-precision surgery.
"Okay, then I'll be thoughtful enough to tie a bow on her when I sew up the wound later, okay?" Fortunately, David was not there. If David was there, he would probably beat up Dr. Strange after hearing that this doctor was so unreliable.
Although he is not reliable in words, his skills are reliable after all. The operation was completed perfectly, the compressed nerves have been corrected, and there will definitely not be any sequelae.
David, who had been anxious outside for 7 or 8 hours, finally felt relieved after hearing the answer. As long as there would be no sequelae. But Strange told David that even if the operation was successful, Chunxi's eyes would not be able to see immediately and would have to be wrapped with gauze for protection for a period of time. Although the nerves had been corrected, the eyeballs had still suffered some damage during the period of compression and could not be used immediately.
David really didn't care how long the bandage would have to be wrapped for. As long as Chunxi could recover, he would be satisfied.
After the operation, Chunxi had to stay in the hospital for five days for observation and could only leave after the stitches were removed. On the fourth day of Chunxi's hospitalization, Fu Chanwei also arrived in the United States, planning to fly directly to Portugal to find Theresa after Chunxi was discharged from the hospital the next day.
Fu Chanwei's work just happened to come to an end, so she might as well stay there for a few more days to accompany Theresa.
After being with David for such a long time, Fu Chanwei still wasn't used to David's habit of calling his parents by their first names...
The author has something to say:
Because I know that two of the people in my group who are following my writings are high school students, one is in his second year and the other is in his third year, which is the most critical time. I could have stayed up a little later yesterday since today is a holiday and the two kids have to go back to school tomorrow. They said they will be waiting for my early morning update tonight, so I put it up earlier. Everyone must remember that novels are just entertainment, and studying and working are the most important.
