Chapter 29: They haven't consummated their marriage yet?
Aunt Zhou was taken aback for a moment. "Hmm, I know a little. How did you know that?"
Du Wanchun smiled and said, "Mother, have you forgotten? I asked about your sachet last time."
Aunt Zhou suddenly realized, "Oh, I see. What's wrong, Wanchun?"
Du Wanchun thought for a moment and replied, "Mother, I have a good idea."
“Go ahead,” said Aunt Zhou.
Du Wanchun replied, "We can make incense and sell it."
Aunt Zhou asked in confusion, "Incense? Does anyone buy it? The people living around here are all farmers, so they probably don't need incense."
Du Wanchun looked up at Cheng'an County and said, "Mother, we can sell in Cheng'an County and Qingzhou Prefecture. There are many high-ranking officials and nobles there who use incense every day."
Aunt Zhou frowned slightly, her face clearly showing concern.
Seeing this, Du Wanchun quickly said, "Mother, don't worry, we can try selling in the county first. If it doesn't sell well, we won't sell it anymore."
Upon hearing this, Aunt Zhou thought it made some sense and nodded, saying, "Alright, let's give it a try first."
After discussing it, the mother-in-law and daughter-in-law decided that after they sold some more radishes and duck eggs, they would make some balm and perfume to sell at the county market.
Looking at her clever daughter-in-law, Aunt Zhou was happy and couldn't help but sigh, "Wanchun, you're so smart, how could your father and stepmother say you're stupid? They're really blind."
Du Wanchun laughed and said, "My stepmother would love for me to be stupid."
Aunt Zhou raised an eyebrow and said, "If I see her again in the future, I will definitely slap her a few times, otherwise I won't feel satisfied."
Du Wanchun carried a basket of duck eggs into the house. "Mother, don't get your hands dirty if you hit her."
Aunt Zhou followed behind her, then suddenly remembered the voice and asked softly, "Wanchun, your mother died young, is there something she hasn't told you yet?"
Du Wanchun asked her, "What is it?"
Aunt Zhou pulled her aside and whispered, "Um... sharing a room..."
Du Wanchun was stunned, her face turning bright red instantly. Although she was married, she was still a virgin, and no one had ever told her about this since she was a child.
Not to mention it so openly and honestly.
Seeing her reaction, Aunt Zhou immediately understood, "I knew it. Your stepmother must not have told you how she treated you."
Du Wanchun nodded. "Indeed, she didn't say, but, Mother, I..."
Aunt Zhou, holding her hand, continued in a low voice, "I know my own son. His leg is crippled, but his back isn't. I don't have anything else to teach you, just remember to call for me if you can't take it anymore."
What if... I can't take it anymore...?
Du Wanchun looked at Aunt Zhou in surprise.
Aunt Zhou blinked and said, "Ruiyuan, don't look down on him now because of his bad legs. He's always been very healthy since he was a child, stronger than most men. Strong men are the most demanding, so if you can't take it anymore, remember to call for your mother. Don't try to tough it out."
Du Wanchun's cheeks flushed even more, and her ears burned. "Mother, my husband and I..."
She hesitated, then remained silent.
Aunt Zhou immediately understood, frowned, and said, "You haven't consummated your marriage yet?"
Du Wanchun nodded, blushing.
Aunt Zhou was very surprised. She had thought that Du Wanchun was just reserved and didn't say anything usually, but she didn't expect that they hadn't consummated their marriage at all. She quickly asked, "Wanchun, do you not want to be with Ruiyuan?"
Du Wanchun quickly shook her head, "No."
After hearing this, Aunt Zhou asked, "Is it because Ruiyuan is unwilling?"
Du Wanchun did not reply this time.
Aunt Zhou immediately understood. "That child must have been afraid of being a burden to you, which is why he didn't want to consummate the marriage. But now that he can stand up, he might change his mind."
Du Wanchun's heart pounded as she listened, especially when she thought of the way Zhou Ruiyuan looked when he changed clothes that night; her heart felt like it was about to jump out of her chest.
Aunt Zhou pulled her aside and said with a smile, "Wanchun, don't be too nervous. Ruiyuan is a caring person."
Du Wanchun nodded. She knew that Zhou Ruiyuan had always been very good to her since she entered the family.
Aunt Zhou then whispered a few more words in her ear, which were even bolder than the previous ones.
Du Wanchun almost covered her face when she heard this, then ran into the house with the duck eggs in her arms.
Aunt Zhou watched her retreating figure with a smile on her face.
As night fell, Du Wanchun hesitated to go inside, still thinking about what Aunt Zhou had said.
Zhou Ruiyuan pushed a chair to find her, "Wife, it's getting late, you should rest early."
