Chapter 342 Learning the Truth of the Past
When Prince Rong saw his wife and daughter, whom he had wanted to burn to death, return together, a hint of disappointment flashed across his face. He immediately put on a fake smile and walked over, saying, "Madam, Xiang'er, it's so good that you're alright."
Princess Rong looked up and saw Prince Rong, but there was no joy in her eyes; instead, there was hatred in them.
She had overheard the entire conversation between Prince Rong and General An when she arrived.
Although Prince Rong feigned grief at the loss of his wife and daughter, she noticed the upturned corners of his mouth and the unintentional hint of joy in his expression.
She never imagined that the person she had shared a bed with for over ten years would commit such a heinous act.
"Madam, what's wrong?" Prince Rong noticed the strange look in her eyes and asked her.
Princess Rong withdrew her gaze and looked at the man in black kneeling on the ground, asking, "Your Highness, isn't this Rong Fu, who is by your side?"
Prince Rong quickly said, "Yes, but Rong Fu seems to be possessed by an evil spirit; he keeps talking nonsense."
He said he wanted to send someone to take Rongfu away.
However, Princess Rong stopped her, saying, "I don't think he's possessed. He seems to be saying things I don't know."
She slowly stepped forward, and before Prince Rong could speak, she coldly asked Rong Fu, "What exactly did you see in that abandoned house last night?"
Rongfu, with his head down, slowly looked up at Princess Rong when he heard her voice. His pupils then contracted, and he retreated in panic. "Princess, don't come looking for me! It wasn't me who wanted to harm you, it was the Prince! He sent me to set fire to your and the eldest young lady's courtyard. He wanted to burn you both to death!"
Princess Rong paused, her face darkening, and a sharp pain shot through her heart as if it were being cut by a knife.
She slowly turned her head to look at Prince Rong, and her heart sank instantly.
So it really was him who wanted to kill him.
General An was furious. He strode over, grabbed Prince Rong, and said, "So, it really was you! You're so heartless that you could even do that to your own daughter."
Wei Xiang'er, who was standing to the side, also took a few steps back. "Father, you actually want to kill me too?"
Wei Xiang'er is only fourteen years old this year. Although she is a young lady from the Rong Prince's Mansion, she is kind and clever, and is a good little maid.
Du Wanchun took her hand and said, "Miss Xiang'er, don't rush, take another look."
With Du Wanchun's comforting words, Wei Xiang'er felt much better and nodded.
The old king was not very surprised; he was quite happy to watch the show.
He even went so far as to ask Prince Rong, "Brother, did you really do this?"
Prince Rong lay on the ground, looked up at them, rolled his eyes, and explained, "Father-in-law, Your Majesty, Xiang'er, I really didn't do this. How can you assume that I would kill my own daughter just because of what he said? I'm not that heartless."
As Prince Rong spoke, he began to act out the roles of a good husband and a good father again.
"When I saw these ruins today, I thought to myself, if Madam and Xiang'er were no longer here, I wouldn't want to live either."
"Seeing you all doing well makes me happier than if I were alive myself."
Du Wanchun almost vomited from disgust after hearing what he said.
Princess Rong shared the same sentiment. She turned to Rong Fu and continued, "The Prince said he didn't order you to start the fire. Tell me, why did you set fire to us?"
Rongfu is now in a daze, his mind filled with images of the ghosts from last night.
He dared not lie, and said to himself, "No, it was the prince who sent me. Everything was arranged by the prince. He ordered me to kill. He killed Miss Qiu before, and now he ordered me to kill the princess. If you want to take my life, don't come to me, go to him."
Princess Rong lowered her voice and asked, "Who is Miss Qiu?"
Prince Rong interrupted, "He's talking nonsense, Madam. There has never been a Miss Qiu in our manor."
Princess Rong had no affection left for her husband at this point. He was even willing to harm his own daughter, so there was no need for her to show him any mercy.
She said coldly to Rongfu on the ground, "If you don't want to be haunted by evil spirits again, you'd better tell me what happened back then. Otherwise, not only me, but that Miss Qiu won't let you off the hook either."
That advice really did work.
Rongfu was so frightened that he trembled. He stared blankly ahead and said, "Miss Qiu used to be a singer from Xuan Yue Kingdom. The prince fell in love with her at first sight and took her to his mansion. He raised her for three years. Later, because he wanted to marry the princess, he sent me to strangle her and then bury her in that small courtyard."
Princess Rong was shocked to hear this. She never imagined that her entry into the mansion would lead to someone's death.
She slowly turned her head to look at Prince Rong, "If you didn't want to keep that woman, you could have just sent her out of the manor. Why did you have to send someone to kill her?"
Prince Rong clenched his fists, trying to argue his way out of it.
Rongfu continued, "That's because the woman was pregnant. She said she would tell the princess about it and ruin the prince's reputation. In a fit of anger, the prince decided to kill her."
"What?!" Princess Rong's face turned pale instantly. She really didn't expect that her husband had been so vicious from the beginning, not even caring about his own child.
Her body trembled slightly.
