Chapter 46 Finally, we got to eat meat!
Passersby didn't care, and it wasn't until around dusk that the villagers dragged her out and took her back in an oxcart.
Liu slowly woke up in the oxcart, and when she saw that she had arrived at her own door, she immediately rolled off the cart.
She crawled and knelt all the way home, eager to find water to wash herself, only to find Du Dajiang rolling around with another woman as soon as she opened the door.
"Ah! Du Dajiang! What are you doing?!" Liu was so angry that she trembled all over when she saw the scene in front of her.
Du Dajiang quickly grabbed his clothes and put them on, looking displeased. "Didn't you leave? Why did you come back?"
Pointing at the woman on the bed, Liu demanded angrily, "Who is this woman? What are you doing?!"
The woman on the bed slowly dressed, raising her eyebrows and smiling, "Sister Liu, can't you see that? Aren't you the one who knows best?"
Before Du Wanchunniang died, Liu secretly slept with Du Dajiang in order to marry him. This was something everyone in the village knew.
Now, Liu is also watching her husband sleep with other women.
It's truly a case of what goes around comes around.
Liu was devastated and strode forward towards the woman, yelling, "You bitch! I'll beat you to death!"
Seeing that he smelled terrible, the woman quickly hid behind Du Dajiang and said in a sweet voice, "Brother Du, please save me!"
Du Dajiang looked at Liu with disgust and slapped her hard across the face.
The slap left Liu completely disoriented, causing her to fall to the ground.
Liu covered her face and burst into tears, crying, "Du Dajiang, I've been with you for several years and given you a daughter, how could you treat me like this?!"
Du Dajiang pointed at her angrily and said, "You still have the nerve to mention a daughter? I brought you into the family hoping you would give me a son, but you gave me a daughter instead! Since you can't have children, don't blame me for finding other women to have them!"
Du Dajiang had said the same thing to Du Wanchun's mother when he was with Liu Shi.
Du Wanchun's mother was already in poor health at the time, and upon hearing this, she coughed up blood.
Now it's Liu's turn to vomit blood.
Liu clutched her chest and cursed angrily, "You two adulterers, just you wait! I won't just leave like this. I'll stay here even if it kills me!"
Seeing her being so unreasonable, Du Dajiang was too lazy to pay any more attention to her. "You can stay here if you want, but don't expect me to give you a bite to eat!"
Liu refused to believe he really wouldn't give it, and lay down on the ground, refusing to leave the Du family. "Fine, I'll stick with you to the death!"
Du Dajiang, holding the woman on the bed, kicked her away and walked towards the next room.
The two rooms are not very soundproof.
Liu lay on the ground, listening to the sounds coming from next door, her teeth itching with hatred.
While the Du family was in turmoil, the Zhou family was gathered together counting their silver.
Looking at the ingots of silver, Aunt Zhou's eyes gleamed. "Madam Fang is such a good person. If it weren't for her, we might not have been able to sell our fragrant dew."
Du Wanchun nodded and said, "Yes, Madam Fang is indeed a worldly person."
Aunt Zhou held her hand and said, "However, the most important thing is to thank you, Wanchun."
Du Wanchun quickly shook her head, "Why thank me? These fragrant dews were all made by you, Mother. Without your skill, Madam Fang might not have liked them."
"Of course I want to thank you. If it weren't for you, I wouldn't have thought I could make perfume," said Aunt Zhou, her face full of gratitude.
Du Wanchun smiled and said, "It's nothing. The main thing is that Mother trusts me. If Mother didn't trust me, she wouldn't have actually made the fragrant dew with me."
Aunt Zhou sighed deeply, smiling while her eyes glistened with tears, "You're such a good child."
The three Zhou brothers, watching the mother-in-law and daughter-in-law flattering each other, all laughed.
The next morning, Aunt Zhou took the money and bought half a pig, cotton, cloth, some pots and pans for daily use, and salt in the next village.
She made two new quilts out of cotton, and then made a new set of clothes for each of the children.
Aunt Zhou made a light green pleated ruqun (a type of traditional Chinese dress) for Du Wanchun.
The fabric this time is much better than the pale yellow one from last time.
After Du Wanchun put on the new clothes, she looked completely refreshed, and her fair face looked even healthier than usual.
She had never worn such fine clothes in the Du family before. Even the better fabrics were gray-purple linen dresses, which were not only ugly but also rough and uncomfortable to wear.
The skirt that Aunt Zhou made for her had layers upon layers, making it light and airy when walking. When the spring breeze blew, the skirt would sway gently like flowing water.
She liked it more and more as she looked at it, and walked around the yard several times.
Many villagers passing by would stop and turn around to look at her, muttering that the girl was really pretty.
Inside the house, Aunt Zhou was delighted to hear this, thinking that when she earned more money, she would buy her daughter-in-law a decent piece of jewelry.
At noon, Aunt Zhou divided up the half pig she had just bought.
She hung large chunks of pork in the woodshed to smoke and make cured pork, and then stewed the pig's trotters and bones into soup.
She gave the rest of the silver to Du Wanchun.
Du Wanchun kept the silver, intending to save some more to build a new house for her family.
Soon, the aroma of meat wafted from the Zhou family's residence.
Chen Tieniu from the Chen family next door smelled the aroma of meat and was quite surprised. He pulled his wife aside and asked, "Jiang Qiuju, can you smell the aroma of meat?"
Jiang Qiuju nodded. "I can smell it! Who's eating meat here?!"
Changliu Village is not a poor village, but not many people can afford to eat meat regularly.
The Chen family is considered wealthy, but recently the vegetables in their fields haven't been growing well, the chickens are gone, the piglets are gone, and they haven't eaten meat for almost half a month.
Jiang Qiuju's mouth watered at the smell of the meat; she hadn't been able to eat anything good at home lately because her hands had been clumsy.
"I guess the Meng family in the village is eating meat." Chen Tieniu served her a bowl of plain porridge.
"Dad, Mom, it's Auntie's family next door eating meat," said Old Chen as he walked in from outside.
Jiang Qiuju was immediately stunned, "Her family can eat meat now?"
