Chapter 47: Great News!
Old Chen sat down, picked up his bowl, and said, "Yes, I think Second Aunt's family is getting better and better."
Jiang Qiuju snorted coldly and said, "I guess your second aunt has hooked up with a man, otherwise how could she get meat?!"
No sooner had she finished speaking than Chen Tieniu slammed his hand on the table and roared, "Enough!"
Jiang Qiuju was startled and looked at him with a surprised expression. "You, you dare to yell at me?!"
Ever since Chen Tieniu was frightened by the vegetables in the field last time, he has changed completely and is no longer timid and submissive.
He picked up the bowl of porridge that had been in front of Jiang Qiuju and dumped it on her head, saying sternly, "If you don't like the food, get out!"
Jiang Qiuju was so shocked that she quickly got up, wiping the porridge off her face as she said, "Chen Tieniu, have you gone mad!"
Chen Tieniu glared at her with wide eyes, "Say that again!"
Jiang Qiuju was a bully who preyed on the weak. Seeing Chen Tieniu's terrifying gaze, she immediately gritted her teeth and obediently sat down, not daring to say another word.
The aroma of meat wafting from next door filled her with a strange fragrance, and looking at the mess on her own table, her heart ached as if stabbed with needles; she felt unbearably miserable.
They completely forgot about the times when they used to complain about how their family ate meat and how it was disgusting to the Zhou family next door.
In the Zhou family courtyard.
Aunt Zhou placed the cooked pig's trotters on the table and called them to eat, "Wanchun, Ruiyuan, Zhao'er, Feng'er, come and eat!"
Du Wanchun was tidying up the incense sticks she had just made in the backyard when she heard the sound. She quickly wiped her hands and went to the kitchen to help serve the rice.
Zhou Ruiyuan, who was inside the house, took the initiative and brought the food to the table for her.
Ever since his legs got better, he often took the initiative to do the work with Du Wanchun, afraid that she would get tired.
However, Du Wanchun was not pretentious; she would always volunteer to do what she could on a daily basis.
After she was seated, Aunt Zhou and Zhou Ruiyuan each put a large pig's trotter on her plate.
The braised pig's trotters were stewed until very tender; each bite was rich but not greasy, and had a sweet taste.
Although Aunt Zhou's cooking skills were average, for someone who hadn't eaten meat in a long time, these pig's trotters were a true delicacy.
Du Wanchun ate two or three pieces in a row.
Seeing that she enjoyed the food, Aunt Zhou felt satisfied and gave her another piece, afraid that she wouldn't have enough. "Come on, eat more."
"Thank you, Mother." Du Wanchun thanked her and put a piece on Zhou Da Niang's plate as well.
The family was enjoying their meal when, not long after, a guest suddenly arrived at their home.
Is Miss Du home?
Upon hearing the sound, Du Wanchun quickly got up and walked outside. "Who's looking for me?"
It turned out to be Steward Liu from the Fang family.
When Butler Liu saw Du Wanchun, he quickly smiled and said, "Miss Du, hello."
Du Wanchun was startled and quickly welcomed him into the house. "Steward Liu, what brings you here?"
As Steward Liu walked inside, he replied, "I have some great news to tell you, Miss."
Du Wanchun asked with a puzzled look, "What great news is it?"
"Butler Liu!" Aunt Zhou hurried over and fussed over to Zhou Zhao and the others, asking them to get chairs and pour water.
Butler Liu took the water, sat down, and said slowly, "Didn't you sell a few bottles of perfume to those ladies last time, Miss?"
Du Wanchun nodded.
Butler Liu continued, "Our master really likes the fragrant dew and incense that you sell, so he wants to do a business deal with you, a business that's sure to make a profit."
Du Wanchun sat to the side, puzzled, and asked him, "What kind of business is it?"
Butler Liu took a sip of water and replied, "Our master has taken a liking to your skills and wants to invite you to work at our Fang family's incense shop. We'll open a shop that only sells incense to you, and then we'll pay you a monthly wage. What do you think?"
Du Wanchun listened, her brows furrowing slightly.
Steward Liu held up five fingers and said, "The wages are fifty taels a month."
A monthly wage of fifty taels was not a small amount for an ordinary farming family.
Normally, Aunt Zhou would have agreed immediately, but she didn't speak when she saw Du Wanchun.
Du Wanchun did the math in her head and felt increasingly that something was wrong with the fifty taels.
