Chapter 7 My Aunt's Chicken Was Bitten to Death
After Mrs. Jiang left, Aunt Zhou tidied up the house again, reheated the food, and the family happily ate together.
"Come on, Wanchun, eat more." Aunt Zhou put all the scrambled eggs on her plate.
Du Wanchun was deeply moved. Since her mother died, no one had ever treated her so well.
She quickly handed the egg to Aunt Zhou again, this time not calling her "aunt" but "mother," saying, "Mother, come and eat the egg."
Seeing how sensible she was, Aunt Zhou felt very gratified, and her eyes immediately welled up with tears.
However, this was quickly broken by Zhou Zhao and Zhou Feng.
“Sister-in-law, Mother, stop arguing. Be careful that those two big ducks think we don’t have enough to eat, and they’ll keep having more than we can eat.”
Zhou Feng was honest and kind, while Zhou Zhao was lively and cheerful. Especially after her hearing improved, she always spoke with a smile, which soon made everyone laugh.
Before long, the whole courtyard was filled with the laughter of their family.
For the first time in three years, the Zhou family, mother and her three children, had laughed so happily.
Meanwhile, things were in complete chaos at Chen Tieniu's house next door. Jiang Shi, having been upset by Zhou Da Niang, kept cursing at Chen Tieniu and Chen Lao Da.
"Look at your good second sister! She actually tried to chase me away with a turd today. She's getting more and more unruly. They say the eldest sister-in-law is like a mother. Your parents are gone, so am I not her mother? Is this how she treats her mother?!"
Then he scolded Old Chen, "And you, all you do is farm all day. When you have free time, come with me to see the Wang family's daughter at the village entrance! Get married as soon as possible."
Chen Tieniu and Chen Laoda didn't dare to offend her at all, so they could only nod repeatedly.
After finishing her rant, Jiang was still not satisfied. She got up, glanced at the next room, and said, "Those two ducks from the Zhou family are really lucky. I clearly used double the amount of medicine, how come they not only didn't die, but also laid eggs."
She began to hesitate, "Could it be because those two ducks weren't poisoned at all?"
Chen Tieniu advised, "Wife, you should stop doing such underhanded things. You'll be punished for it!"
Jiang stood with her hands on her hips, furious. "Retribution? What retribution! A married woman shouldn't come back to take things from her parents' home!"
Chen Tieniu frowned and said, "My dear wife, Second Sister didn't take anything from us. That little shabby house was one you didn't want in the first place, and the backyard was cleared by them themselves. If anyone is taking anything, it's us who took a piece of her land."
The land they were talking about was bought by Aunt Zhou after she sold most of her belongings when she first came to Changliu Village.
Chen Tieniu and Jiang insisted that this was their Chen family's land, and that it had been forcibly taken away.
Jiang wouldn't listen, "Are you worried about your sister?"
Chen Tieniu lowered his head, not daring to speak.
Jiang snorted coldly and said, "When she was enjoying herself in the capital, why didn't she think of you? Now you feel sorry for her, that's just being pathetic."
Chen Tieniu turned to the side, not daring to breathe.
Jiang kicked the table, stood up fiercely, and said, "If I can't poison you the first time, I'll poison you a second time!"
She found the rat poison in the house and went to the backyard. This time, she increased the dosage; the ducklings would die within an hour of eating it.
After administering the medicine, Jiang did nothing all afternoon but wait to see the ducks lying dead next door. She waited and waited, and as it was getting dark, she couldn't stand it any longer and went to the backyard to see if the two ducks were dead.
However, she had only just reached the backyard gate when she heard Old Chen running up, panting, "Mom, something terrible has happened! Our chickens... our chickens..."
"What's wrong with our chickens?" Jiang's face turned pale, and she quickly pulled Chen Laoda aside to ask.
Old Chen's face was extremely grim. He pointed to the backyard and said, "Mother, all our chickens have been killed by weasels!"
"What?" Mrs. Jiang thought she had misheard.
Old Chen repeated himself, "Mom, just now all our chickens were killed by weasels!"
This time, Jiang heard it clearly. Her legs went weak, and she ran to the backyard, leaning against the wall. There she saw that all the old hens in the yard were lying motionless on the ground with their necks crooked.
There were originally a few eggs in the henhouse, but they have all turned into eggshells.
"Oh my goodness! All my chickens are gone?! How could there be a weasel in broad daylight?!" Jiang slapped her thick thigh and cried loudly.
The Chen family owns land and usually has no worries about food and clothing, but without these old hens, they would have fewer eggs to eat or sell.
If we can't sell the eggs, we'll lose a lot of money.
Jiang became increasingly heartbroken. She walked into the flock of chickens, kicking the dead chickens as she cursed, "Damn weasel! You steal food, fine, but why did you kill all my chickens! Don't let me catch you, or I'll skin you alive and dry you into a dried meat."
"Mother, what should we do?" Old Chen walked into the flock of chickens, picked up a dead chicken, plucked the feathers off it, and sighed, "It's so badly damaged that there's not a single good piece of meat left, it's inedible."
Jiang knocked the chicken out of his hand, saying, "If you don't want to eat it, then don't. Our Chen family isn't short of chickens."
After she finished speaking, she shouted at the top of her lungs towards Chen Tieniu behind her, "Old Chen! You have to buy me a mousetrap today, I'm going to catch that weasel!"
Chen Tieniu was startled by her shout and nodded repeatedly, saying, "Okay, wife of the child."
Jiang was holding her waist, panting heavily, and looked as if she had been skinned alive, making it difficult for her to stand.
At this moment, Chen Laoda suddenly remembered something and looked towards the backyard of the Zhou family next door, saying, "Mother, we've been attacked by weasels. How is Second Aunt doing?"
