36 Crisis
◎"Wife-kun."◎
Jiang Yan had been leaving early and returning late lately, always smelling faintly of cooking oil. She seemed to be aware of this, and fearing disturbing Cui Huaifeng, she would always shower before going to bed.
One day, Jiang Yan got up early again and was about to go out when Cui Huaifeng couldn't help but ask, "What's going on recently? Is there anything I can help with?"
Jiang Yan smiled, walked back to the bed, leaned over and kissed Cui Huaifeng, "I'm sorry to have worried you, but it's nothing. But you'll know tonight."
Cui Huaifeng smiled helplessly and said, "It's so mysterious. Fine, then I'll be waiting for you."
The sun sets in the west, covering the landscape in orange. Jiang Yan returns home early, carrying a lot of things in his hands, mostly food.
After entering the yard, Zheng Pu took it and placed it near the stove.
Jiang Yan met Cui Huaifeng's curious gaze and revealed the mystery: "I'll cook today."
Zheng Pu and Cui Huaifeng looked at each other, their eyes slightly widened, quite surprised.
Jiang Yan had already rolled up her sleeves and walked towards the stove. "I recently went to a restaurant to learn cooking skills, but I only learned two or three dishes. Today I asked my husband to come and test my results."
Cui Huaifeng blinked and said, "Okay."
Zheng Pu walked over to watch with some concern. Jiang Yan cleaned and cut the fruits and vegetables skillfully. He was not so experienced in handling meat, so he asked Zheng Pu for help. After preparing the ingredients, he heated the oil in a wok and started cooking. Overall, he looked quite capable.
About an hour later, the hot meal emerged from the oven. Winter melon and pork rib soup, scrambled eggs with tomatoes, and stir-fried spinach. The soups were rich, fragrant, and refreshing, each dish laid out on the table. A bamboo basket nearby held juicy, washed peaches and cherries.
Jiang Yan carefully held a bowl of steaming noodle soup, walked towards Cui Huaifeng who was sitting at the table, and gently put it down, "The last dish is here."
The bowl contains chewy white noodles, two green spinach leaves, and a fried egg. It is a bowl of longevity noodles.
Cui Huaifeng was stunned. He was puzzled by the arrangement of today's dinner, but when he saw this bowl of noodles, he vaguely remembered something.
Jiang Yan sat down next to Cui Huaifeng, his eyes soft, "You forgot, today is your birthday."
Cui Huaifeng was momentarily lost in thought. It had been so long since he'd celebrated his birthday. When he was little, his mother and father would celebrate together, but it was so long ago, so long ago that even the memories were hazy. Ever since his mother took a concubine, it wasn't just his birthday he'd missed. Only after meeting Jiang Yan had this day dedicated to celebrating his birth come alive again.
However, it has been several years since Jiang Yan went to the border. He has no intention of spending this time without her, and no longer pays special attention to this special day. He just treats it as an ordinary day. He almost forgot that today is his birthday.
Not to mention that a gentleman should stay away from the kitchen. Let alone Jiang Yan being a prince, even girls from ordinary families rarely cook.
Cui Huaifeng lowered his head and looked at the longevity noodles made with love by his lover, feeling both moved and happy.
Jiang Yan said expectantly, "Huai Feng, try it and see how it tastes."
Cui Huaifeng picked up his chopsticks and tasted each one carefully. He nodded and said sincerely, "They are all good."
"Ah, won't you praise me more?" Jiang Yan opened his eyes wide, trying to look watery. It might look funny to others, but Jiang Yan was good-looking, with black and bright eyes, and this action had a unique flavor to it.
Cui Huaifeng stroked his lips and chuckled, "That... is really delicious, my wife."
Jiang Yan's smile froze, then his eyes lit up and he asked excitedly, "What did you call me just now?"
"nothing."
"You just mentioned 'wife-lord', I heard it!" Jiang Yan said happily while holding his hand.
"Really?" Cui Huaifeng smiled faintly.
"Say a few more words, I want to hear it."
"Eat." Cui Huaifeng ignored Jiang Yan's coquettish behavior and put a piece of golden scrambled egg into Jiang Yan's bowl.
Jiang Yan raised her eyebrows, picked up the scrambled eggs, and ate them with a secret sense of satisfaction. She had only eaten a piece of ordinary-tasting egg, but she felt extremely happy.
Cui Huaifeng curled the corners of his lips slightly.
After the meal, Jiang Yan said goodbye to Cui Huaifeng reluctantly. She was obviously going next door to deal with the documents that had piled up due to her recent cooking lessons, but she acted as if she was going on a long journey.
"Okay, go ahead." Cui Huaifeng pulled apart Jiang Yan who was wrapped around him like an octopus.
"Okay." Jiang Yan went back to the next room dejectedly.
——
There was a lot of official business piled up, including several urgent ones, and Jiang Yan worked on them until late at night.
The moon was dark, the wind was strong, and the sky was covered with thick clouds. Two people, like ghosts in the night, quietly approached the back of the main house where Cui Huaifeng was.
The clouds slowly drifted away, revealing the moon hidden behind them. The moonlight illuminated the faces of the two men, who turned out to be the two hooligans who had clashed with Jiang Yan a few days ago.
The two had been traveling for years, and aside from the government, they had only suffered losses, and even injuries, at Jiang Yan's hands. They harbored resentment, waiting for an opportunity to strike, hoping for revenge against Jiang Yan. After scouting the area for days, they knew the addresses of these three men, and today was the day to take them down!
Gao Cheng raised the torch and threw it towards the house until he saw the flames, then he hurried away.
——
Next door, Jiang Yan finally finished his official business and stretched out his body to stretch his muscles.
She stood up and patted Zhu Jin's shoulder. "You've worked hard today. It's all over. Go back and rest."
Zhu Jin said respectfully, "Thank you for your understanding, Master."
Jiang Yan and Zhu Jin went out together, and the unusual light attracted Jiang Yan's attention.
She looked for the source of light, and found it was the main house. The house was already ablaze with flames, and the bright flames deeply stung Jiang Yan's eyes.
Jiang Yan screamed in pain, "Huai Feng!"
