Although she didn't have to actually stay by the bed, Meng Qi still felt exhausted. Lying in bed, she wondered if Song Chengze had returned to the palace yesterday. Had he visited Concubine Lian? Since they hadn't discussed this beforehand, was he worried she might cause trouble in the palace again?
Thinking of this, Meng Qi turned over and pressed her face against the pillow. The bright sunlight from outside poured in through the bed curtains and shone into her eyes. She squinted her eyes and suddenly smiled. What was wrong with her? Wasn't she tired and wanted to take a nap? Why did she think of Song Chengze?
Meng Qi was awakened by a loud noise. The serving maid heard Meng Qi calling for help, lifted the curtain and asked, "Princess, have you slept well?"
"Where's Ms. Li?" Meng Qi sat up. "What's going on outside? There seem to be a lot of people."
"I heard it too, but I was in the room the whole time and didn't know what happened. The lady beside you left shortly after you fell asleep."
Meng Qi let the maid help her put on her shoes. "Going out? Didn't you go back to the West Wing?"
The maid finished putting on one and went on to put on the other. "Well, I watched her go out through the hanging flower gate."
Meng Qi frowned. Ms. Li was with her in the main hall yesterday. Although she didn't have to do anything like herself, wasn't she tired after staying up for so long?
"Go and see what happened. Why are there so many people here?" Meng Qi said softly.
The little palace maid agreed. Just as she lifted the door curtain, she heard Fanghua's voice coming from the central hall, "This place is really grand. It's the first time I've seen it. I don't know how fifth brother persuaded father. Didn't you see..." She looked up and saw the little palace maid standing at the door of the west room, bowing to her.
Fanghua thought for a moment and walked over. When she entered, she saw Meng Qi looking at her. She said, "If someone didn't know, they would think you were waiting on me without taking off your clothes last night. You must be so tired. You slept so soundly."
Meng Qi didn't respond. "What's going on outside? There seem to be a lot of people."
"Princess Rui didn't see what happened just now. I have never seen anyone like that before." The speaker was Concubine Jing, the biological mother of the Ninth Prince, a person who was usually nice to everyone but also not close to anyone.
Because the Ninth Prince was born prematurely and was weak, he had to drink medicine before eating, and Jingpin was a noncompetitive person. Therefore, neither the Ninth Prince nor the other princes, nor Jingpin and the other concubines posed a threat. She was one of the few people in the palace who was not gossiped about.
Meng Qi didn't know much about Concubine Jing, and they hadn't met often. She had often refused to attend important events, citing the Ninth Prince's health as an excuse. But she clearly remembered that in her previous life, Concubine Jing was one of the few concubines of Emperor Jing'an who had a happy ending. She eventually followed her son to his fiefdom.
She had only heard of this quiet and cheerful Concubine Jing before, but she had never expected to be able to chat with Fanghua so intimately. As far as she knew, except for Yong'an, the concubines in the palace would not come to the West Wing Hall where Fanghua lived.
Meng Qi bowed to Concubine Jing while thinking.
Concubine Jing smiled and took her hand. "Master Kaiyuan has arrived, bringing with him his most talented disciples. I heard they are all very capable. Normally it's not easy to invite just one of them, but this time they all came together."
Meng Qi understood. She had heard yesterday that Prince Cheng had persuaded the Emperor to invite Master Kaiyuan to examine the Empress. She had never met the Emperor's uncle.
"It's my fault for being too sleepy. I didn't even get to see the face of Master Kaiyuan." Meng Qi said embarrassedly.
"You have never done the job of taking care of the sick before. Although we don't have to do anything, we still have to keep an eye on you all the time. Besides, you have just moved to a new place, so you are not used to it." Jingpin's words were appropriate.
Fanghua twisted her body and snorted coldly, then said to Concubine Jing, "Why don't you have lunch here? I'll ask the kitchen to add some more dishes."
After hearing this, Meng Qi became even more interested in their relationship.
"I'd better go back. I don't know how long Master Kaiyuan can stay. I want to bring the Ninth Prince to let the master take a look. I wonder if he's available."
Jingpin stood up as she spoke. Fanghua said, "Why is he not available? Even though it was Fifth Brother who invited him, it wasn't Father who agreed. Ninth Brother is a prince. Master Kaiyuan can see the Empress, but not Ninth Brother?"
Jingpin looked at Fanghua's angry expression and said, "How can it be the same? You, stop thinking and saying whatever you want. You've forgotten how that girl was dealt with last time."
Watching Concubine Jing lead the servants out of the courtyard, Fanghua turned to look at Meng Qi, "Aren't you curious?"
"What are you curious about? Master Kaiyuan?"
"Yes, everyone was in the main hall just now, just to take a look at Master Kaiyuan."
"I'm curious, but no one called me, and you said I slept too deeply." Meng Qi spread out her hands.
Fanghua glanced at her sideways, "It's a pity that Sixth Brother asked me if you could sleep."
"Is the prince here too?" Meng Qi asked.
Fang Hua looked at the slightly surprised expression on Meng Qi's face and felt a little relieved. "Yes, they came here with Father and Master Kaiyuan."
"Then why didn't you call me when you went out?" Meng Qi said somewhat dissatisfiedly.
Fanghua asked in confusion, "Didn't you tell the lady beside you not to ask anyone to call you, saying that you were tired yesterday? Now you blame others."
When Meng Qi heard this, she was like, "Ms. Li?" She had just told her to have a good rest and not to disturb her unless necessary. Did she not express herself clearly, or did she not understand?
"Are you still going?" Meng Qi walked out.
"No, there's nothing to see at this time. Father forbids anyone from going there."
Meng Qi stopped and asked, "What about your sixth brother? Is he gone?"
Fanghua turned her head and looked at her with a smile, "He didn't leave just now, but I'm afraid he has left now."
