Fu Hong sat waiting in the shop outside. When she finally saw Qin Shi and the others come out, she immediately got up to greet them and asked with a smile, "Have you finished talking?"
"Yes." Qin Shi nodded. "Thank you for your help today, Sister Hong."
Fu Hong smiled dismissively, "We've known each other for so many years, why are you being so polite with me?"
As she spoke, she glanced at Xing Zhaozhao, who was following behind and seemed to look rather unwell, and asked worriedly, "How did the talk go?"
Qin Shi nodded with a satisfied smile: "Hmm, not bad."
Fu Hong: "??" Really? But something feels off to her.
"You..." Fu Hong hesitated for a moment, wanting to ask what they had talked about inside.
Before she could finish speaking, her phone, which was on the table beside her, suddenly rang.
She glanced at it; it was an unfamiliar local number. She answered casually, "Hello? Who is this?"
An unfamiliar male voice came through the phone: "Is this Ms. Fu Hong?"
Fu Hong frowned slightly: "Yes, I am. Who are you?"
"Hello, this is Lanyuan Police Station."
Fu Hong frowned even more, and asked in confusion, "Police station? What do you want with me?"
Upon hearing the words "police station," Qin Shi and Xing Zhaozhao, who were standing nearby, also looked over curiously.
"What is it?" Qin Shi asked.
Fu Hong shook her head blankly, also completely unaware.
Xing Zhaozhao thought of something, turned her head and exchanged a knowing glance with Gao Mingcheng.
"Excuse me, do you have a younger sister named Fu Lan who went missing in 1971?" the police officer on the other end of the phone asked.
Fu Hong's heart clenched instantly, and her voice trembled slightly as she asked, "Yes, you've found our Xiao Lan?"
Upon hearing this, Qin Shi looked at Fu Hong and became nervous.
The police officer on the other end of the phone gave a vague answer: "It should be."
Fu Hong grew impatient and raised her voice, asking, "What do you mean by 'it should be'? If it is, it is; if it isn't, it isn't. Can't you just give me a straight answer?"
"I'm sorry, we really can't confirm it at the moment. Although our investigation suggests that it should be her, we still need you to come over for a kinship test to make a final confirmation," the police officer said.
"A kinship test?" Fu Hong suddenly had a bad feeling, her voice trembling, "Is she already...?"
There was a moment of silence on the other end of the phone before the police officer's somber voice came through: "I am very sorry, please accept my condolences."
Fu Hong covered her mouth, unable to hold back her sobs: "No, Xiao Lan can't just be gone like this. She must still be alive and well somewhere. You must have made a mistake. The one you found isn't my sister. I don't believe it..."
Qin Shi's eyes also reddened. He walked over, gently patted her shoulder, and comforted her.
“I know you may not be able to accept this, but we have found the people who were involved in her trafficking back then, and it is almost certain that it is them…” the police officer said.
Fu Hong was shocked: "Human trafficking?"
“That’s impossible.” She didn’t believe it. “Back then, Lanyuan was so safe and there was never anything like this. There must be a mistake.”
"Think carefully, did anyone introduce your sister to anyone back then? According to the person involved, he met your sister through an introducer and that's how he decided on his target," the police officer said.
“That’s even more impossible. Back then, the only person who introduced someone to my sister was…” Fu Hong blurted out, but before she could finish, she realized something, abruptly stopped, her face turned deathly pale, and her whole body trembled involuntarily. She muttered to herself, “This is impossible, this is absolutely impossible…”
Xing Zhaozhao couldn't bear to watch, so she turned around and buried her face in Gao Mingcheng's chest.
Gao Mingcheng hugged her and gently patted her head comfortingly.
Just then, Gao Hongfei's cell phone suddenly rang in his pocket.
He took it out and frowned. It was a call from the director of the mental hospital.
He glanced at Fu Hong beside him, vaguely guessing what was going on, and quickly answered the phone: "Hello? What's up?"
"Two police officers just arrived with an arrest warrant and took Lin Wan away in handcuffs," the dean said.
"Understood." Gao Hongfei replied, hung up the phone, glanced at Fu Hong, then turned to Gao Mingcheng and Xing Zhaozhao and said, "The police just went to the mental hospital and took Lin Wan away in handcuffs."
Fu Hong suddenly turned to look at Gao Hongfei, her eyes red as if they were about to bleed.
Her suspicions became true, and she could no longer deceive herself. Her heart was clenched in agony.
"How could I be so stupid!" She raised her hand and slapped herself hard, then burst into heart-wrenching sobs, "Xiao Lan..."
