Mr. Dong slapped Mrs. Dong away, looked at Dong Cang with a serious expression, and asked, "Are you sure Acheng is really dead?"
Dong Cang held his head, looking flustered, and said, "I don't know either. I was so scared at the time that I picked up half a brick and hit him twice. When he fell down, his head and face were covered in blood, and he wasn't moving anymore."
"You little beast, how dare you! That's your own brother!" Mr. Dong cried out in anguish, raising his hand to slap him. The family now relies on his eldest son; if he were really gone, how could their lives ever be as comfortable as before?
When Dong's mother saw this, she panicked and quickly pulled Dong Cang into her arms: "Why did you hit Cang? Cang already said that he didn't do it on purpose. Now that things have come to this, there's no use in being angry. You've already lost one son. If you don't hurry up and think of a solution, do you not want this last son either? If he's arrested by the police, he'll be executed. You won't even have anyone to take care of you in your old age."
Mr. Dong's raised hand remained suspended in the air for a long time before he finally sighed heavily and lowered it.
"What should we do now, honey?" Mrs. Dong had no idea, so she had to ask Mr. Dong.
Dong Cang looked at his father pitifully.
Mr. Dong glared at Dong Cang with disappointment, but there was nothing he could do. This was his only son, and he was counting on him to take care of him in his old age.
He thought for a moment and asked Dong Cang, "When you made your move, no one saw you, right?"
Dong Cang shook his head: "It was still early then, they probably hadn't gotten up yet."
Mr. Dong breathed a sigh of relief and said, "That's good. If the police really come knocking, we'll just pretend we don't know anything. Anyway, no one saw it, there's no evidence, so they can't do anything to Acang."
Dong Cang's eyes lit up. That's right, no one saw it, what was he afraid of?
Seeing Dong Cang's sudden relaxation, Mr. Dong glared at him and said, "You're staying home today and you're not allowed to go anywhere. If you cause any more trouble, you'll regret it."
"Understood." Dong Cang nodded in agreement, unusually obedient. Even if they dared to let him go out today, he wouldn't.
Thinking of something, Mrs. Dong looked at Mr. Dong expectantly: "By the way, husband, if Acheng really passes away, can his job at the textile factory be transferred to Acang?"
Mr. Dong's eyes lit up. After thinking for a moment, he said, "Acheng's job is a technical position. Acang might not be able to do it, but he should be able to get another job from the textile factory."
Dong Cang was displeased upon hearing this: "Does that mean I'd have to go to work every day, just like my older brother?"
"If you don't want it, then give it to me." Dong Cui appeared out of nowhere.
Dong's mother glared at Dong Cui: "Get out of the way, your brother doesn't even exist yet, what are you fighting over there for?" Although she also doted on her youngest daughter, she couldn't compare to her youngest son.
Dong Cui pouted, unconvinced: "My brother said he didn't want it."
“Who said that? He wanted it.” As she spoke, Dong’s mother turned to Dong Cang and coaxed him gently, “You can ask the textile factory for an easier job, slack off whenever you want, and still get a free salary. Isn’t that great? Why don’t you go?”
Dong Cang thought about it and agreed, saying, "Okay, I'll go."
"Good boy." Mrs. Dong smiled contentedly, patted Dong Cang's head, and turned to leave. "I'll go make you breakfast..."
After finishing breakfast, Dong Cang felt relieved and went back to bed for a nap.
Mr. and Mrs. Dong didn't know when Dong Cheng's incident would come to light, so they stayed home and avoided going to work.
"Bang, bang, bang," a knocking sound suddenly came from outside.
Mr. and Mrs. Dong were both startled. They glanced at each other and exchanged a tense look.
"Just pretend nothing happened and do as they agreed beforehand," Mr. Dong instructed Mrs. Dong.
Mrs. Dong nodded, took a deep breath, got up and went out.
When the person outside didn't get a response, they knocked on the door again: "Is anyone home?"
"Coming, coming! What are you yelling for? You're waking my son up. You'll make me regret this!" Mrs. Dong said irritably.
Outside the door, Zhao Bin and Zhou Haomin both looked up at the sun, which was almost directly overhead: "..." At this hour, he's still sleeping? How can he possibly sleep? And his parents still spoil him? No wonder they raised such a son.
When Mrs. Dong opened the door and saw Zhou Haomin, her heart skipped a beat. Sure enough, it was the police from the Public Security Bureau.
She feigned surprise: "Huh? Young comrade, what brings you here again? Wasn't my son Acang cleared of suspicion regarding the theft at the Fu family's house? What else is there?"
As she spoke, she turned to look at Zhao Bin and asked, "And who is this man?"
“This is our Captain Zhao,” Zhou Haomin said. “Besides the theft at the Fu family’s house, we have another matter we’d like to ask your son about.”
"Isn't your captain the same guy surnamed Lin from yesterday?" Mrs. Dong asked curiously.
"That's the vice-captain, and this is the captain," Zhou Haomin explained.
"Oh." Mrs. Dong nodded in response, opening the door to let them in while secretly wondering to herself: What should I do? This one seems difficult to deal with.
Aunt Dong led Zhao Bin and Zhou Haomin into the house: "Please sit down first, I'll go call Acang."
Zhao Bin and Zhou Haomin both looked at Mr. Dong sitting in the room, a hint of surprise flashing in their eyes. Why did it seem like he was deliberately waiting for them here?
Dong's mother soon brought over Dong Cang, who was still sleepy-eyed.
"Where is your eldest son?" Zhao Bin asked deliberately.
Mr. Dong, Mrs. Dong, and Dong Cang exchanged glances, and a hint of panic flashed in their eyes simultaneously.
Zhao Bin saw it all.
"You mean Cheng? He should be at work by now," Mr. Dong said, feigning nonchalance.
"Oh? Did you see him leave with your own eyes?" Zhao Bin continued to ask.
Mr. Dong shook his head: "No, he always goes out early."
"You don't know either?" Zhao Bin looked at Dong Cang and asked.
Dong Cang couldn't hold back any longer and became nervous: "How...how would I know? I've been sleeping at home the whole time."
"Really? But someone reported to the police station that they saw you in Liujia Village, knock your brother to the ground, and then run away," Zhao Bin said casually.
Dong Cang was startled and blurted out, "Impossible! There was no one around at the time, how could anyone have seen us?"
Mr. Dong: "..."
Mrs. Dong: "..."
Benny Chou: "..."
Zhao Bin: "..."
Dong Cang was stunned for a moment before realizing what he had said, and tried to argue, "That's not what I meant... What I meant was actually..."
Unfortunately, he was too flustered to speak clearly.
"Alright, of course someone saw it. No matter what you say, it's no use. Let's go back to the Public Security Brigade first." Zhao Bin said, looking at Zhou Haomin, "Take him away."
Zhou Haomin immediately pounced on Dong Cang like a hungry wolf and grabbed him.
Mrs. Dong quickly went over and stopped Zhao Bin: "Captain Zhao, is there some misunderstanding here? My son Acang didn't go out at all today."
"Whether it's a misunderstanding or not, you'll know once you've met the witnesses at the Public Security Bureau." Zhao Bin said, looking at Dong Cang's despicable appearance, and couldn't help but kick him. "You beat your own brother up like that, and he's still lying in the hospital unconscious, and you can still sleep soundly at home? Have you lost all your conscience?"
Mr. Dong, Mrs. Dong, and Dong Cang were all startled and looked up at Zhao Bin.
"What? Acheng isn't dead yet?" Dong's mother actually asked.
Zhao Bin frowned, his unfriendly gaze slowly sweeping across the Dong family members' faces: "What? You all thought he was dead? And you can still sit there nonchalantly, trying to cover up for your youngest son? Are you even human? Isn't Dong Cheng your son?"
