Chapter 229 Where's my mom?

Gao Mingcheng called a nurse over and, after confirming that Xing Zhaozhao was indeed ready to be discharged, had the nurse remove the IV drip. He then went to get the medication and personally escorted Xing Zhaozhao home.

In the abandoned cellar, Gao Mingcheng handed the medicine to Xing Zhaozhao and solemnly instructed her, "Remember to take your medicine on time. If you still can't sleep tonight, call me anytime."

"Okay." Xing Zhaozhao nodded with a smile and was about to turn and leave when Gao Mingcheng suddenly took out a thick letter from his pocket and handed it to her. "And this, when you go back, remember to mail it for me."

"This is..." Xing Zhaozhao reached out and took the letter. When she saw the name of Gao Mingcheng's current unit commander written on the envelope, her expression hardened. She looked at Gao Mingcheng, somewhat nervously, and asked, "Will sending this letter have any consequences?"

Gao Mingcheng smiled and patted her head, comforting her, "Don't worry, it will only have a good impact." Ending a war a few years earlier and saving many lives is a good thing, isn't it? However, he couldn't say what changes might occur in the future, but he trusted the wisdom of his superiors.

Xing Zhaozhao then accepted it with peace of mind.

“And this…” Gao Mingcheng then handed Xing Zhaozhao another piece of paper.

"What is this?" Xing Zhaozhao asked curiously as she took the book and opened it. Inside was a list of names and their contact information.

Xing Zhaozhao looked up at Gao Mingcheng, puzzled.

"If Chen Dachuan's affair is exposed, try to find these people; they should be able to help," Gao Mingcheng said.

Xing Zhaozhao's heart sank, and she felt uneasy. She said, "After Zhang Gong'an and Chen Hao finished their investigation, they left without saying anything. They probably didn't find anything. They should be fine, right?"

“I haven’t met that Officer Zhang, so I can’t say for sure, but Chen Hao…” Gao Mingcheng paused, looking at him with a complicated expression, and said, “Sometimes you just can’t figure out what he’s thinking. Anyway, it’s always good to be prepared in advance.”

Xing Zhaozhao nodded seriously: "I understand." Then she solemnly put the letter and the list into her pocket.

"I'm going back." Xing Zhaozhao rushed over and hugged Gao Mingcheng tightly.

Gao Mingcheng's heart tightened, and he subconsciously reached out to hug her, but his arms were quickly empty. She had already turned around and gone back. He reached out and touched the wall where she had disappeared. It was as solid as ever, and he felt a sense of emptiness in his heart.

Just then, his phone rang. He took it out and saw it was Gao Hongfei calling. He answered it casually, but before he could say anything, he heard Gao Hongfei ask abruptly on the other end of the line, "Where's my mom?"

Gao Mingcheng was taken aback: "How did you know?" It seemed he hadn't told him this.

"Driver," Gao Hongfei uttered through gritted teeth.

Gao Mingcheng only then realized that he had almost forgotten about this.

Gao Hongfei stayed up late yesterday and woke up late today. He was sitting at the dining table eating breakfast when he suddenly saw the nanny carrying a huge insulated box out of the kitchen and handing it to the driver.

"Who is this meant for?" Gao Hongfei asked, looking at Ying Rongrong who had just finished breakfast. He assumed that Ying Rongrong had asked someone to prepare it.

Ying Rongrong looked at Gao Hongfei with a blank expression: "I don't know, didn't you ask the nanny to prepare the nutritious breakfast?"

"I didn't," Gao Hongfei said, and then he and Ying Rongrong both looked at the driver.

The driver's hand holding the insulated box stiffened for a moment before he explained, "The old general ordered it to be prepared."

Oh, I see. Then it's alright.

Gao Hongfei and Ying Rongrong turned around at the same time.

Gao Hongfei continued eating his breakfast.

Ying Rongrong casually asked, "Where are you planning to send this to?"

"The hospital," the driver said, turning to leave.

Gao Hongfei and Ying Rongrong exchanged a surprised glance, then turned to look at the driver who was about to leave and called out, "Stop."

"Why is the old man in the hospital? What happened? When did it happen? How come I didn't know?" Gao Hongfei asked in rapid succession.

The driver hesitated for a moment, then said, "It's not the old general, it's... the old... lady."

"Old lady? What old lady?" Ying Rongrong was completely confused. Where would they get an old lady from?

Gao Hongfei paused for a moment, then quickly realized what was going on. His expression hardened as he looked at the driver and asked, "Did the old man go up the mountain?"

The driver nodded.

"When did you go?" Gao Hongfei then asked.

“Last night, around midnight,” the driver said.

Ying Rongrong then remembered something, looked at Gao Hongfei, and said, "Wait a minute, when I was heating up your milk yesterday, didn't I run into Dad? He said he couldn't sleep and went out for a walk, right? But when I went back to my room, I saw him get into a car and leave. So he lied to me? Why?"

Gao Hongfei's face was gloomy and extremely ugly. Why else could it be? She didn't want him to know. This old man was getting more and more outrageous; even though her mother was in the hospital, he was still keeping it from her.

Unable to finish the rest of his breakfast, Gao Hongfei slammed his chopsticks on the table, stood up, and said, "I'll go with you."

“I’ll go too,” Ying Rongrong said, getting up as well. She also wanted to see what was going on.

The driver sensed something was wrong and hesitated whether to call Gao Mingcheng to let him know. But before he could even carry out his plan, he saw Gao Hongfei reach out his hand to him.

The driver looked over, puzzled.

"Give me your phone, so you don't tip me off," Gao Hongfei said.

driver:"……"

"Isn't it a bit much? There's no need for that." Ying Rongrong also felt that Gao Hongfei was making a fuss over nothing.

Gao Hongfei insisted: "No, it has to be done."

The driver had no choice but to take out his phone and hand it to Gao Hongfei.

Gao Hongfei took it and casually put it in his pocket: "I'll return it to you when I get back."

Gao Hongfei thought he had made all the necessary preparations and that nothing else would go wrong. However, when he rushed to the hospital emergency room, he found that the person was already gone.

"Is this the place? Where is everyone?" Gao Hongfei looked at the empty bed, his face extremely grim.

The driver's forehead was already sweating profusely: "I... I know too. When I left, she was lying here, and the old general was sitting on that stool with her."

"Then why is he gone?" Gao Hongfei looked at the driver suspiciously. "You didn't secretly hide a cell phone and tip off the old man, did you?"

driver:"……"

The driver felt utterly wronged and emptied all his pockets to show Gao Hongfei: "I really only have that one phone." If Gao Hongfei still didn't believe him, he wouldn't mind cutting open his stomach to show him that he really only ate one bowl of noodles—no, he really only had one phone.

Just then, a nurse happened to pass by, and Ying Rongrong stopped her and asked, "Excuse me, where is the patient on this bed?"

"The patient in this bed has already passed away," the nurse said.

"When did you leave?" Ying Rongrong asked.

The nurse checked the time: "About half an hour ago."

"What illness did she have? Why did she suddenly pass away?" Ying Rongrong continued to ask.

"It's nothing, just a bit of a shock, she developed a high fever. After the IV drip was finished, the fever subsided, and she left. However, this lady left before the IV drip was finished, it seems like there was an emergency at home. Fortunately, the fever has gone down, and she's fine now," the nurse said.

Remembering the driver's address of her as "old lady," Ying Rongrong couldn't help but ask again, "Excuse me, how old is that lady? Is she an elderly woman?"

The nurse shook her head: "No, she's only in her early twenties."

Upon hearing that it was only "twenty-something," Ying Rongrong immediately thought of Xing Zhaozhao. But then she thought again and felt something was wrong. She turned to look at Gao Hongfei with a hint of doubt in her eyes. If it were Xing Zhaozhao, he shouldn't have reacted so strongly.

The nurse looked at Ying Rongrong and Gao Hongfei and realized something was amiss: "What is your relationship with that lady? How come you don't even know how old she is?"

Ying Rongrong hesitated for a moment, unsure how to answer.

Standing nearby, Gao Hongfei blurted out, "She's my mom."

The nurse paused for a moment, then quickly smiled and said, "I'm sorry, I think you've probably got the wrong person. I suggest you try looking somewhere else."

Ying Rongrong's face flushed slightly. She apologized to the nurse, saying, "I'm sorry," and then pushed Gao Hongfei out.

Gao Hongfei, his face grim, reluctantly walked out while taking out his phone to call Gao Mingcheng. As soon as the call connected, he blurted out, "Where's my mother?"
