Chapter 19 Eat More Sugar, and You Won't Feel Bitter
Shu Yu remembered that the old man driving the cart called him... Lu Laosan.
So the woman she saw in the county town who was trying to take advantage of the situation and wanted the old man to bring her basket back for free was actually Aunt Lu's third wife?
So these are the little fat boy's parents! What a coincidence!
Lu Laosan muttered a few curses at the door, probably because the old lady's words had threatened him. He didn't dare to come in and stayed outside for a while before going back inside.
The old lady snorted coldly, "They're getting more and more unreliable."
As she approached, she immediately changed her expression and said to Shu Yu, "Miss Shu, why are you standing here? Please come and sit down in the main room to rest. I have already borrowed an oxcart from the village chief, and we will set off tomorrow morning."
As she spoke, she handed the vegetable basket she was carrying to Mrs. Ruan.
Mrs. Ruan visibly relaxed; she had been worrying about what to cook for dinner. There was a small vegetable patch in the yard, but only a few green beans and cabbages had been planted. The green beans had just been harvested yesterday, and the next batch wouldn't be ready for another two days.
If there are no guests, they can make do with some porridge and pickled vegetables.
Now, with the vegetables that my mother-in-law borrowed from somewhere, plus the piece of meat that Miss Shu brought over, she's finally able to put together a few decent dishes.
The kitchen was handed over to Madam Ruan, and Shu Yu was taken back to the main room by the old lady.
She found that although the old lady sometimes spoke rather roughly, she also had the wisdom of an old person. Shu Yu didn't feel awkward chatting with her at all, and she found it quite interesting to listen to her talk about the interesting things in the village.
She also learned that Sanya and Dahu were twins, the only pair of fraternal twins in the village. She had an older sister, Daya, who was three years older than her and was already married in the neighboring village of Dayan.
Lu Erbai has four siblings: the eldest is Lu Dasong, the second is Lu Erbai, the third is Lu Sanzhu who was just scolded outside, and there is also a younger sister, Lu Sixing.
As for why the old lady lived with her second son, who was the second oldest in the family, she didn't say.
But Shu Yu guessed that perhaps the old lady saw that the Lu family was having a hard time and wanted to help them out.
As they were talking, they saw Sanya and Dahu secretly observing them from outside.
Shu Yu looked over, but the two quickly pulled their heads back.
Shu Yu smiled, and San Ya pulled Da Hu to sit on the steps in the courtyard. She took out a piece of candy from her pocket, put it in Da Hu's mouth, and whispered, "This is from Sister Shu, it's so sweet."
She had only eaten half of the first candy that Sister Shu gave her, thinking she would give it to Da Hu when he came back.
But then Shu Yu gave her the rest of the candy, and San Ya suddenly had a lot more candy in her hands.
When she came back, she gave one to Grandma, one to each of her parents, and now she's giving one to Dahu, so everyone gets one. She'll save the rest to share with her eldest sister when she sees her later.
In this way, the eldest sister's life will be sweet and happy.
Sanya shared her thoughts with Dahu, who nodded repeatedly and added, "Then let's keep one more so that when we find Second Sister, we can give her one too."
“Okay.” Sanya nodded vigorously. She thought for a moment, “I’ll save two for my second sister. Mother said that my second sister is all alone outside and may have suffered a lot. If she eats more candy, she won’t feel so bitter.”
