Chapter 21 The Lu Family Has Run Out of Food
The old lady said, "I know you're a young lady from a wealthy family, and you're definitely more capable than us country folk. I was thinking, if you're really grateful for our second son saving your life, then help us inquire about Er Ya's whereabouts. As for the money for treating her leg, we'll repay you in the future."
Shu Yu didn't know what to say. Inquire about Er Ya's whereabouts? She was Er Ya, so how could she inquire?
Faced with the old lady's eager gaze, Shu Yu felt a chill run down her spine and could only nod restrainedly, "...Okay."
The old lady immediately perked up, just as Sanya's voice came from outside, "Grandma, Sister Shu, Mom says dinner is ready."
Shu Yu secretly breathed a sigh of relief and quickly got up and left the main room.
The Lu family's kitchen was very small. Besides two stoves and a square table, there was only a cabinet, a water vat, and a few jars for pickling vegetables.
There were four dishes and a soup on the table. In addition to the meat she brought, there was stir-fried cabbage, stir-fried eggs with chives, fried pork cracklings with winter melon, and a loofah soup.
Da Hu and San Ya both stared wide-eyed, unable to help but swallow hard.
"Lots of vegetables, eggs, and meat..."
They've never eaten this well, not even during Chinese New Year. Especially the meat dish; back then, there was only a little bit of minced meat, but now it's big chunks, and the portion is so generous.
I wish I could eat this much meat every day.
Ruan served Shu Yu a bowl of rice, while everyone else had only thin porridge with barely any rice grains in front of them.
She packed the rice into a very heavy bowl; you could feel its weight when you picked it up.
Perhaps fearing she would feel bad, Lu Erbai explained, "It's hot, and we've been working outside all day, so we don't have much of an appetite. Porridge is more appetizing."
Shu Yu would be a fool to believe that; it seems the Lu family is probably running out of food.
She moved the bowl of porridge in front of Sanya to her own side and pushed the bowl of rice to the middle. "You all said you've worked all day, so you must be hungry. I ate something in the county town before I came, so I'm not too hungry now. Porridge will do."
“Oh, Miss Shu, you…” Madam Ruan wanted to persuade her again, but Shu Yu had already started drinking her porridge.
The Lu family members exchanged glances. Lu Erbai hadn't looked at Shu Yu closely before, after all, he was a grown man and felt a little embarrassed.
But after hearing Ruan's guess in the kitchen earlier, and looking at her now, she realized that she really did look more and more like Daya. Especially when she smiled at Sanya, it was as if Daya was still at home.
Lu Erbai quickly shook off the jumbled thoughts in his mind. He didn't try to persuade Shuyu anymore. After hesitating for a moment, he divided the bowl of rice among himself.
Sanya and Dahu were initially hesitant to pick up any food, and even the other members of the Lu family were somewhat reserved, only eating the few vegetarian dishes.
On the contrary, Shu Yu, who was a guest, couldn't bear to watch any longer and put a few pieces of meat on the twins' plates.
Shu Yu ate quickly; she barely touched the meat on the plate and soon left the table.
She thought that if she didn't eat, everyone else would finish the food. But after Shu Yu left, the old lady each took a small piece of meat and put the rest in the cupboard, saying, "We'll eat it tomorrow."
Shu Yu looked up at the sky. Wouldn't the weather get worse tomorrow?
It was getting late, so after the Lu family finished eating, they tidied up and prepared to go to bed.
The Lu family only had two rooms. The larger room was where Lu Erbai and his wife lived with their twins, and the smaller room was where the old lady lived alone.
