Chapter 163 A Place Far From the Conflict

"You still haven't told me how you got the scar on your shoulder," Meng Yuxiu asked seriously.

Chang Lili frowned slightly, thinking for a moment, and said, "Hmm... I think it was when I fell as a child. I don't remember, I only remember my grandmother telling me that."

Meng Yuxiu's gaze deepened, and he said nothing more.

After resting at Meng Yuxiu's place for a while, Chang Lili insisted on returning to her own courtyard, so Meng Yuxiu had no choice but to take her back.

The two chatted and laughed all the way, and Chang Lili felt much more comfortable. The soreness in her body was also relieved. This whole thing felt like a dream.

"By the way, how is that guard? He was really a master, but he was ambushed and seriously injured. How is he now?" she said indignantly.

Meng Yuxiu chuckled and reassured him, "Don't worry, it's all over now. Just rest and recuperate, and there won't be any major problems."

Chang Lili nodded, then turned and entered the courtyard.

Meng Yuxiu stood there for a moment, then turned to leave. Suddenly, he saw a head peeking out from the courtyard gate. He saw the smile in the man's eyes, a smile as warm as a spring breeze in March.

"Would you like to come in and have a seat?" Chang Lili rarely invited her so politely.

Meng Yuxiu's smile unconsciously carried a hint of doting: "No, I have things to do. You and your mother-in-law should have a good time together."

Chang Lili's smile vanished instantly, and she pouted disappointedly, saying, "Go on with your work, you busy person."

He then withdrew his head, giving Meng Yuxiu a disapproving look.

The latter lowered his head and smiled for a while before turning around and slowly leaving.

The courtyard was quiet, and Chang Lili didn't see her mother-in-law. She went into her mother-in-law's room and saw her sitting calmly at the table, sewing.

She glanced at Chang Lili and said indifferently, "You're back."

Just like Chang Lili, who was returning from the military manufacturing department on a normal day.

Chang Lili paused for a moment, then gave a somewhat bewildered "hmm".

Although she didn't want her mother-in-law to worry, being neglected like this was too miserable.

She felt she couldn't accept it, but comforted herself by saying that her mother-in-law was probably still in shock and that she should wait patiently for a while.

She deliberately sat down next to her mother-in-law. Seeing that her mother-in-law was still focused on her needlework, she cleared her throat, poured herself a glass of water, and then poured one for her mother-in-law.

The mother-in-law remained silent, not even lifting her head, showing no reaction whatsoever.

"Grandma... I'm back!" Chang Lili finally couldn't help but say pitifully.

"I know, there's food in the kitchen. Go eat if you're hungry," her mother-in-law said without even looking at her.

Chang Lili grabbed the clothes and needle and thread from her mother-in-law's hands and said with dissatisfaction, "What are you doing? I didn't come home all night yesterday. Aren't you worried about me?"

She looked at her mother-in-law in a coquettish manner.

The mother-in-law was amused by her appearance and said, "How could I not worry about you? But I'm not worried now. Meng Yuxiu told me yesterday that he would definitely bring you back. As soon as he found you today, he told me that you were safe and sound. He also said that the doctor had examined you and that you were lively and healthy, with nothing wrong with you. So what do I have to worry about?"

As she spoke, she took the clothes and needle and thread back from Chang Lili, and couldn't help but chuckle at Chang Lili's expression.

Chang Lili didn't know whether to be happy or unhappy. Meng Yuxiu's work was truly impeccable!

"Mother-in-law, have you been bribed by him? I remember you used to dislike him and didn't want me to have much contact with him," Chang Lili said, puffing out her cheeks.

The mother-in-law smiled and said, "You said it yourself, that was in the past. In the past, I didn't understand him and was afraid he was a playboy. Now he treats us so well, and his character is impeccable. What objection could I possibly have?"

Chang Lili thought this made sense, but couldn't help blushing. Seeing her mother-in-law working hard, she asked, "What are you doing?"

“My clothes are torn, I need to mend them,” the mother-in-law said.

Chang Lili immediately objected: "What are you patching up? We're not living those hard times anymore. I'm a foundry master now. I'll take you to buy new clothes!"

As she spoke, she pulled her mother-in-law to leave, but her mother-in-law was unwilling to put down her needlework and said helplessly, "You silly girl, what are you saying? We are living a good life now, but we must always be thrifty. We can't let 'the rich feast while the poor freeze to death'!"

"Why worry about that! I haven't bought you many clothes yet. Let's make a few today and wear them slowly!" Chang Lili said enthusiastically.

But the mother-in-law absolutely refused to give up her needlework.

Chang Lili couldn't persuade her otherwise, so she had to sit down and watch her mother-in-law carefully mending the clothes. She silently memorized her mother-in-law's figure, thinking that she would secretly buy her a few new clothes later, and then tell her the truth.

Meng Yuxiu returned to his study, and from the moment he sat down, he looked worried, his brows furrowed.

After a while, someone knocked on the study door. Meng Yuxiu exhaled and said calmly, "Come in."

The voice was very soft, as if it wasn't directed at the person outside the door, but the knocking stopped abruptly. The door wasn't opened, no one entered, but a person suddenly appeared inside.

He bowed respectfully without speaking, but his actions demonstrated absolute obedience.

"Keep an eye on Chu Moyu and report all developments to me." Meng Yuxiu stared at a certain spot in the room the entire time, as if deep in thought.

The man nodded slightly and then vanished in the next moment.

Meng Yuxiu couldn't figure out what Chu Moyu's purpose was, but now he had a few clues.

Regardless of why he initially wanted to kill Chang Lili, his approach to her at this point was likely due to her suspicious identity. But was this solely Chu Moyu's doing, or was it at the Emperor's behest?

Thinking of this, Meng Yuxiu couldn't help but sigh and touch his forehead.

If the Emperor finds out about this, it will cause quite a stir, and the scars on Chang Lili's body are very likely related to her identity.

So, who was Chang Lili's mother-in-law who raised her?

He couldn't figure it out, and he had no way of investigating. He hoped that everyone else, like him, would also be unable to find out Chang Lili's background.

Regardless of Chang Lili's background, all he wanted was the carefree her now, unrelated to her past. He only hoped that she would not encounter any misfortune.

Right now, Chang Lili is being watched by more than one group of people. No matter how much he protects her, it's impossible to guard against everything. If he could send her to a place far away from the conflict, that would be the best thing.

The Light Machine Division, as a reclusive organization, is composed of individuals who are all exceptionally talented but have eccentric personalities.

As the person in charge of this organization, Meng Yuxiu knew clearly who was in it. Although the Emperor was aware of the affairs of the Light Machinery Department, these people were not under his control, and he had never even seen their faces.

This is why the emperor favored Meng Yuxiu, yet was also extremely wary of him.

He was the only one who could control those geniuses in the Light Machine Department; only he could mobilize and command that force.
