After dealing with the trivial matters that had accumulated over the past two days, Meng Yuxiu decided to go to Chang Lili's courtyard to find her, as there were some things that needed to be arranged.
He took the wine and food and walked towards the courtyard.
The courtyard was peaceful. In the hall, Chang Lili and her mother-in-law were sitting around the dining table. Although there were only two of them, they were eating with great relish, and laughter filled the air.
"Stop putting food on my plate! You're going to stuff me to death!" The mother-in-law's voice was filled with laughter and helplessness.
Chang Lili's playful voice came from behind: "That won't do, it's called reciprocity!"
Seeing someone enter the courtyard and walk towards the hall, the two looked up and saw Meng Yuxiu carrying a food box, walking steadily, with smiles in his eyes and brows.
The mother-in-law hurriedly got up to greet him, saying warmly, "Yuxiu, what brings you here? Haven't you eaten yet? Lili, quickly go and get a couple more bowls and chopsticks."
Before Chang Lili could react, she was sent to serve Meng Yuxiu. She reluctantly said "Oh," but saw a smug smile on Meng Yuxiu's face.
She took a bowl and chopsticks and placed them forcefully in front of Meng Yuxiu.
"Lili!" the mother-in-law called out, glancing at her.
Meng Yuxiu casually placed the food box on the table, only to see Chang Lili, who had turned her head away and refused to look at him, now staring intently at the food box.
He thought for a moment and withdrew his hand that was about to open the food box.
Chang Lili frowned and said loudly, "Take out whatever you brought right now! How can you be like this?"
The mother-in-law was both amused and exasperated, and said indulgently, "Lili, how can you be like this?"
Chang Lili put down her chopsticks and stood up to run to the food box, muttering to herself, "Is it the behavior of a real man to hide things and whet people's appetites?"
Meng Yuxiu didn't stop him, and picked up his chopsticks and began to eat elegantly.
As soon as the food box was opened, Chang Lili was stunned for a moment, and a smile spread from the corner of her mouth to the depths of her eyes, but then she looked nervously at her mother-in-law.
The mother-in-law had already noticed the half-exposed white porcelain wine pot on the food box, but she calmly put away her own bowl and chopsticks, a smile playing on her lips, and slowly said, "Alright, I'm done eating. You two can continue eating."
Chang Lili asked worriedly, "Grandma, you haven't finished eating yet."
The mother-in-law said helplessly, "Alright, you silly girl, if I finish all the food you put on my plate, I'm afraid I'll have to walk out of this house sideways."
After saying that, he left.
Meng Yuxiu continued eating his food without paying attention to himself. When Chang Lili brought the wine pot and cups to the table with great joy, she didn't pour any for him, but instead eagerly poured herself a cup and drank it herself.
He finally couldn't take it anymore and said, "You... little drunkard." His voice was full of laughter and doting.
Chang Lili drank it all in one gulp and felt instantly refreshed.
Meng Yuxiu picked up the wine pot and filled her cup, then poured one for himself. When Chang Lili was about to finish her drink, he raised his hand to stop her.
"Eat some food. If you keep drinking like this, I'll take the wine with me," Meng Yuxiu threatened her.
Chang Lili was unusually well-behaved; she immediately sat up straight and began to eat her food seriously.
Meng Yuxiu suddenly realized that he seemed to have caught Chang Lili red-handed.
He sighed and said, "I can't let anyone know that I have a wife who's addicted to alcohol."
Seeing this, Chang Lili glanced at Meng Yuxiu's expression, took a small sip of wine, and as the aroma filled her nose and mouth, she said contentedly, "Don't worry, you don't need to worry now. You don't have a wife yet."
Meng Yuxiu was displeased upon hearing this, his tone arrogant and domineering: "It's only a matter of time."
When Chang Lili first heard this, she was stunned for a moment before she understood what it meant. Her face turned red and her head spun, and she drank the wine in one gulp.
The two chatted casually, eating their food, enjoying the evening breeze.
"Are you here to celebrate my survival? You have a conscience, though. Even though the cooks in the kitchen have all learned how to brew wine, so what? You've given them orders not to give me any wine without your permission. They might as well not know how!" Chang Lili complained, and after a few cups of wine, she finally satisfied her craving.
Meng Yuxiu gently shook his head: "Although the wine is good, it is not advisable to drink too much, as it is easy to make mistakes after drinking."
“If you just go to sleep after drinking, what problems could you possibly cause!” Chang Lili immediately retorted.
Unexpectedly, Meng Yuxiu suddenly leaned close to her ear and gently blew a breath. Chang Lili immediately felt itchy and hot, her face turned red, and she looked at Meng Yuxiu in astonishment.
The latter smiled ambiguously and said with satisfaction, "Indeed, even if it causes trouble, it's still a good thing in my residence."
Chang Lili dared not speak, so she sat a little further away from Meng Yuxiu and stuffed a few pieces of green vegetables into her mouth.
Meng Yuxiu stopped teasing her, looked at Chang Lili for a while, and then said slowly, "Don't go to the Military Manufacturing Office these next few days."
"Huh?" Chang Lili asked instinctively, her blush still lingering, quickly swallowing the vegetables in her mouth. "Why?"
The disappointment in her eyes was undeniable.
"Didn't you want to learn mechanical arts?" Meng Yuxiu said indulgently.
Chang Lili nodded firmly, the disappointment in her eyes instantly turning into anticipation: "You mean I don't have to go to the Military Manufacturing Department, but instead I'll go to learn mechanical arts? Can I go and learn mechanical arts?"
Meng Yuxiu looked at her head as it approached and gently tapped her forehead: "Don't get excited yet, have you forgotten there's a third test?"
