Chapter Fifty-Five: Help from a Benefactor

For some reason, she felt a sense of relief, but the next moment, she felt unwilling and couldn't help but knock on the door again.

At this moment, a maid suddenly called out, "The prospective wife?"

Chang Lili frowned, wondering who she was calling.

She turned around and looked at the maid with a strange expression. The maid immediately changed her tone and said respectfully, "Miss Chang! What are you doing here? Are you looking for the General? The General has been too busy these past few days and hasn't returned yet."

Chang Lili's heart stirred. She thought of Meng Yuxiu's late-night visit that time. He must have been too busy. But even in such a busy time, he still remembered her. Could it be...?

She cleared her throat and raised her head slightly, saying, "Who said I came to see him? I was just wandering around."

She walked away with light steps. Ever since she saw Meng Yuxiu secretly applying medicine to her, she had felt a soft, tender feeling in her heart, and now that feeling was growing stronger.

Back in the house, Chang Lili thought of the three tests Meng Yuxiu had set for her. If she passed the tests, she would be able to learn mechanical arts. However, because of the trouble caused by Xiao Shuer, the matter was left unresolved.

Chang Lili's desire to learn mechanical arts has grown stronger, and she doesn't want to give up easily.

Now that her mother-in-law has finally agreed to let her do these things, she should naturally go ahead and do them.

After making this decision, Chang Lili was busy at the military workshop every day, and when she returned to the courtyard, she was busy drawing blueprints for the nine-section whip. Her life was thriving.

Meng Yuxiu, who was busy all day long, finally had some free time after he had reorganized the army. But as soon as he had some free time, a maid came to tell him that Chang Lili had come to see him.

"When?" Meng Yuxiu asked, unusually, with great care.

Life may seem mundane, but it has its own unique charm.

Today, Chang Lili was serving tea and water to the master craftsmen at the military workshop as usual, fetching this and that, when a military officer arrived. He was wearing armor and stood out from the group of soldiers. He had a broad forehead, rugged features, a burly figure, and came in with a menacing aura.

The master craftsmen and junior craftsmen in the military workshop looked at each other in bewilderment, fearing that something bad might be about to happen.

Everyone remained silent, busy with their own affairs.

After the man stopped, he whispered something to the soldier behind him.

Chang Lili, feeling curious, quietly moved closer to Xiao Liuzi and asked in a low voice, "Who is this? What happened?"

Xiao Liu pretended to be working with his head down and replied in a low voice, "How would I know what happened? I only know that this is a third-rank cavalry deputy commander. He is arrogant and ruthless. Judging from his behavior, nothing good can happen."

Chang Lili, with a heart set on watching the spectacle, nodded with a sigh.

Xiao Liu suddenly asked nervously, "Could it be that you messed up something while repairing that soldier's weapon the other day?"

Chang Lili glared at him angrily: "Stop looking down on me."

Then, a soldier behind Deputy Lu shouted in a strong voice, "Which one is Master Chang?"

Chang Lili's heart skipped a beat, and she and Xiao Liuzi stared at each other in horror.

Xiao Liu immediately buried himself in his work and ignored Chang Lili.

After the soldier finished asking his question and received no response, Deputy Lu pushed the soldier aside and his booming voice echoed throughout the military equipment department: "I said, call your Master Chang out here!"

Master Liu looked up and said unhappily, "Deputy Lu must be mistaken. There are quite a few people in our military manufacturing department, but there is no Master Chang among them."

Chang Lili stopped watching the spectacle and shrank back, thinking to herself, "Could it really be that there's something wrong with the weapon I made? That shouldn't be!"

"How could there not be? Could I be mistaken?" Lu Fuwei shouted, but no one paid him any attention. Now he was anxious and yelled, "It's one of your female chefs, I can't be wrong!"

With a wave of his hand, the people in the military manufacturing department were stunned. Then, all eyes turned to one place, and they made way for Deputy Lu Wei. Chang Lili stood in the middle of the crowd, her figure slender, looking somewhat isolated and helpless.

The masters looked on with expressions of anticipation, as if they were watching a good show.

Chang Lili slapped her forehead, unable to understand what was wrong with the weapon she had repaired and modified.

A familiar voice rang out: "Sister Lili, Dad, that's right, it's her, it's Sister Lili!"

Chang Lili looked up at Lu Ming in surprise: "Father?"

Facing Lu Ming's happy face, Lu Fuwei raised her eyebrows, and she immediately stood up obediently and said respectfully, "Lu Fuwei, she is Master Chang, who repaired and modified my weapon."

Lu Fuwei's expression improved slightly, and whispers began to circulate around him.

Deputy Lu didn't take it seriously. His face, which had been stern just a moment ago, suddenly became full of smiles. He stepped forward, grabbed Chang Lili's two thin arms, and said, "Master Chang, the weapons you modified are truly amazing. Please make me a batch of these spears so I can distribute them to my soldiers."

The onlookers were so shocked their jaws nearly dropped. Xiao Liu staggered, rubbing his eyes and ears in disbelief.

“Me…me?” Chang Lili pointed to herself.

Lu Ming was eager to step forward, but was glared at by Lu Fuwei and returned to her original spot to stand obediently.

"Yes, I'll leave it to you. I have a lot of soldiers under my command, so I'll trouble you to forge three hundred for me to use first," Lu Fuwei said with a smile.

Chang Lili was stunned for a moment: "Three...three hundred weapons? But...but I've only just arrived at the Military Manufacturing Department and my skills are not yet proficient. It would be better if you asked a few experienced craftsmen to forge these weapons."

“No, this has to be done by you, Master Chang. I don’t trust anyone else to do it,” said Deputy Director Lu.

Chang Lili couldn't help but glance at the expressions of the veteran masters, and indeed, they were quite a sight to behold.

She thought to herself that Lu Ming was indeed Lu Fuwei's daughter; both of them were straightforward and didn't care about what others thought.

"But I'm still learning, I don't have my own blacksmithing table or tools yet." Chang Lili thought that since things had come to this point, she had already offended these masters anyway, so she might as well take this opportunity to offend them completely.

Sure enough, Master Liu said in a cold voice, "How could that be? Although Master Chang is new here, he is much more outstanding than us old guys. I will have someone procure the blacksmithing table and tools later."

"Alright, it's settled then. Master Chang, I'll send someone to pick up the weapon in a few days. Thank you very much."

"Not at all," Chang Lili said casually to him before seeing him off.

Lu Ming followed behind Lu Fuwei, winking playfully at her with a smile, and then left as well.

Chang Lili exhaled, and before she even turned around, she felt countless eyes scrutinizing her, and a constant buzzing of voices.

She turned around and asked with a smile, "Master Liu, where are my tools and work surface?"
