Chapter Fifty-Four: Anticipation, Heart Palpitation

"You're from the Military Manufacturing Department, aren't you supposed to be a foundry worker? Why are you doing all the work of a servant?" Lu Ming asked, frowning. This straightforward girl's eyes were filled with anger and indignation on Chang Lili's behalf. "When did you come to the Military Manufacturing Department? Are they bullying you because of your seniority?"

"Uh...no, no," Chang Lili was caught off guard by Lu Ming's kindness. "I arrived late, and besides, I'm a woman, so it's understandable that they can't accept me right away."

Upon hearing Chang Lili's words, Lu Ming's face showed a somber expression.

“Yes, it’s just because she’s a woman that she has to be treated like this.” Lu Ming said dejectedly.

"Well, actually... it's just their misunderstanding. As the saying goes, women are just as capable as men, and we'll prove them wrong sooner or later!" Chang Lili felt her blood boiling as she spoke these words.

She could tell at a glance that Lu Ming was probably being ostracized because of her status as a woman. Originally, Lu Ming was standing up for herself, but instead, she ended up comforting her.

Hearing this, Lu Ming cheered up, her eyes brightening again. She patted Chang Lili's shoulder and said, "Sister, you're right! I can tell you're not well-liked here, and you must be unhappy."

"No, no, I'm very happy," Chang Lili said, waving her hand.

She's finally met her match. Before, she wouldn't even call me Lili, but now she's calling me "sister."

Lu Ming looked at her, and asked with surprise and seriousness, "Really?"

"As long as I can do what I want to do, no matter how hard or tiring it is, it doesn't matter," Chang Lili said magnanimously.

Lu Ming's gaze towards Chang Lili shifted from admiration to reverence.

"Sister, we are truly kindred spirits, it's a pity we didn't meet sooner! Why don't we become sworn sisters today?" She looked at Chang Lili with great anticipation.

Chang Lili was momentarily shocked. She had thought that Lu Ming was just more adept at making friends than her, but she hadn't expected her to be so direct.

It seemed she had been alone here for too long and had been met with disdain, so Chang Lili couldn't help but feel a little pity for her.

"Chang Lili, what are you dawdling for? Bring me the ink line!" Master Liu's urgent shout came through the room.

Chang Lili immediately said, "It seems there's no chance today. Let's do it another day, there's plenty of time!"

She turned to run back after she finished speaking, but Lu Ming grabbed her arm and said, "Sister, don't worry about what others think. It's true that we women will be looked down upon, but don't take it to heart. You won't be alone here anymore. I will definitely help you."

Looking at her sincere appearance, Chang Lili couldn't help but think of the saying "Even a mud woman crossing a river can't save herself," but she still thanked her and Lu Ming left.

Unbeknownst to her, while she was talking to Lu Ming, her three masters were casting disdainful glances at her from time to time and discussing her amongst themselves.

"You think you're something special just because you're helping repair a weapon," Master Yang said disdainfully.

Master Liu said coldly, "What kind of things can a woman repair? Only that female soldier would dare to let her repair them."

Master Xue asked in confusion, "When did a female soldier arrive in this army?"

"The world is going to the dogs, and our army is getting worse and worse," Master Liu sneered.

Master Yang laughed and said, "This Chang Lili dares to repair weapons for others. I hope she doesn't do a bad job. If it breaks during a battle, she won't be helping others, she'll be harming them."

Master Xue frowned but didn't speak. Master Liu, the most senior among them, said coldly, "That's none of our business. We just need to do our own jobs."

Seeing Chang Lili chatting away with Lu Ming, Master Liu called out to her that she had returned.

After repairing Lu Ming's weapon, she returned to being a maid who helped fetch things and served tea and water every day, but something in her heart had changed.

My time at the military equipment manufacturing plant became interesting and vibrant.

It's always good to have someone who understands you.

After so many busy days, Chang Lili no longer suffers from backaches and pains all day long, and the pain in her feet has gradually disappeared as well.

She gradually adapted to her current life.

When I got back to the house at night and took off my shoes, I was surprised to find that the blisters on my feet had disappeared.

The medicine bottle on the dressing table still stood there quietly, and the scene from that night vividly resurfaced in my mind.

The bright moonlight illuminated the man's sharp yet gentle profile. His hands, which were usually wielded by swords, were large yet possessed a gentle strength. The smooth texture of his clothes and the bone-chilling coolness emanating from the soles of his feet were also visible.

Thinking of Chang Lili, his face flushed red, and waves of heat surged up from the soles of his feet.

She rubbed her face and shook her head.

"What am I doing? Acting like I'm in the throes of first love," she muttered to herself.

Speaking of "spring fever," Chang Lili recalled the insidious poison Xiao Shuer had given her before, and it was all thanks to Meng Yuxiu that she was saved from dire straits.

But thinking about how she was under the influence of the drug and how she looked so pathetic in front of Meng Yuxiu, she couldn't help but feel disgusted.

Chang Lili couldn't help but cover her face; she was really slow to realize this.

"Humans have seven emotions and six desires. Even Meng Yuxiu was once controlled by drugs. Besides, I am just a young woman. It is understandable that I am like this." She blushed and comforted herself.

Suddenly she remembered that when Meng Yuxiu used his internal energy to force the poison out of her body, she was in unbearable pain and even thought that she would rather die, but Meng Yuxiu seemed to have put his arm into her mouth.

When she woke up, she could still taste blood in her mouth.

She only just remembered how badly she had bitten Meng Yuxiu's arm back then.

She jumped out of bed, hurriedly put on her shoes, and rushed out into the yard.

As the saying goes, great kindness needs no words of thanks, but Meng Yuxiu had helped her so much, she should at least go and check on his injuries.

With a feeling of trepidation, she walked towards the study.

It was already dark, and she had a feeling that Meng Yuxiu was a very busy man and should be in his study dealing with things at this time.

"I must feel bad because I owe him too much kindness." Touching her pounding heart, Chang Lili said seriously.

She felt a little strange. She must have really wanted to see Meng Yuxiu, since she hadn't seen him for a while and wanted to know how his arm injury was doing.

But deep down, he was a little afraid to see him. He, who was usually fearless, actually felt a little palpitated.

"When did I become so pathetic? He has been kind to me, and I will try my best to repay his kindness in the future," she said, somewhat annoyed.

No one stopped her along the way; in fact, they greeted her warmly.

But when she nervously walked to the porch of the study, she found that the study was completely dark and there was no candle lit.

"Meng Yuxiu?" Chang Lili called out tentatively, "Asleep? That can't be."
