Chapter Nine: Can't Afford Anything

Inside the general's mansion, everything was calm and uneventful.

The mother-in-law lay on the bed, trying several times to sit up, but Chang Lili pressed her down onto the bed.

"Mother-in-law, just lie down and relax. General Meng is kind enough to have arranged for a doctor to treat you. Just wait patiently for the doctor to examine you." Chang Lili's face was full of smiles.

"I'm used to being tired, and I'm not used to lying down like this," the mother-in-law said, but she couldn't persuade Chang Lili otherwise.

This is truly a blessing in disguise. Although she lost her money and almost lost her life, she and her mother-in-law will no longer be homeless.

Actually, Meng Yuxiu is a pretty good person.

Thinking of him brought to mind the beautiful scenery of that night, and Chang Lili blushed, guiltily averting her gaze.

The servant led the doctor into the house, where Chang Lili warmly welcomed him.

"Doctor, please take a look at my mother-in-law. She often has headaches, and her arms and legs also hurt on rainy days."

When the doctor walked to the bedside, Chang Lili immediately brought a stool for him to sit down.

He stroked his gray beard, took her pulse, and looked at his mother-in-law's face. He said calmly, "It's nothing serious, young lady. The old lady has no major illness. Her legs and arms are just suffering from rheumatism. She only needs to be fumigated with mugwort every day to remove the dampness and cold."

Chang Lili was overjoyed: "That's easy, and mugwort isn't expensive. Grandma, did you hear that? Your illness isn't serious at all!"

The mother-in-law's brows relaxed.

"The problem with your hands and feet isn't serious, and the headache isn't a major issue either. It's just that you've been overworked and are a bit weak. I'll prescribe a medicine for you. As long as you take the medicine according to the prescription, avoid overwork, extreme joy or sorrow, and take good care of yourself, you'll gradually get better."

The doctor spoke with confidence, and the other two were even happier. But when the doctor finished writing the prescription and handed it to Chang Lili, she froze.

"Polygonum multiflorum...deer antler...seahorse..." Chang Lili murmured the prescription, her hands trembling slightly.

"These...these medicines are all extremely precious! I...I won't see a doctor, Lili, I'm fine." The mother-in-law climbed off the bed and said in a panic.

Chang Lili reassured her repeatedly, "Grandma, don't panic. I'll figure out a way to get the money."

"Lili, don't let this old woman like me be a burden to you." The mother-in-law grabbed Chang Lili's hand guiltily.

"Mother-in-law, please sit down. I'll go see the doctor off." Chang Lili pulled her hand away, pressed her down onto a stool, and led the puzzled woman out the door.

This doctor was the best in the capital, and the medicine he used was the most expensive among all doctors. Hearing that the doctor had come to the general's mansion to take pulses for people, how could the general's mansion be short of money? So he prescribed the medicine with peace of mind.

Unexpectedly, Chang Lili lowered her voice and said with difficulty, "Doctor, do you think we can use some cheaper herbs instead of these?"

"There are alternatives, but I can't guarantee the efficacy of this medicine. If any problems arise in the future, don't come blaming me..."

"Never mind then, thank you, doctor." Hearing that the medicine's effectiveness would be greatly reduced, Chang Lili didn't say anything more and politely saw the doctor out.

The doctor took a few steps and then stopped, advising, "Let me tell you, many pharmacies don't have these precious medicinal herbs, and even if they do, they might not be genuine. You'd better go to Mingyi Pavilion to buy them."

Chang Lili, could this doctor be colluding with Mingyi Pavilion to swindle money?

After thinking about it, I realized that these people wouldn't dare to lie to the people in the General's Mansion.

She clutched the prescription tightly in her hand and ran towards the front courtyard of the general's mansion.

Her mother-in-law had raised her with great difficulty, and all her health problems stemmed from her. She was determined to find a way to make her mother-in-law live a comfortable life.

Along the way, she kept asking the servants and maids in the General's Mansion about Meng Yuxiu's whereabouts, and also inquired about what the Yige Pavilion was.

Only then did she realize that Mingyige was the best pharmacy in the capital, and that what the doctor said actually made a lot of sense.

Knowing that Meng Yuxiu was practicing martial arts in the backyard, she hurriedly ran to the backyard.

Just then, Meng Yuxiu was practicing his sword in the courtyard. He was dressed in a neat light blue outfit, and his long sword was wielded with a sharp and swift motion.

The latter was stunned, thinking to herself that Meng Yuxiu was not only handsome, but also more and more handsome the more she looked at him. No wonder the women in the capital were infatuated with him. Now even she was a little tempted by his good looks.

A flash of cold light appeared, and Meng Yuxiu's long sword flew towards Chang Lili, embedding itself half an inch into a pillar by the corridor.

He glanced expressionlessly at Chang Lili in the corridor and said coldly, "Have you seen enough?"

Chang Lili moved her eyes, glancing fearfully at the long sword. The sound of the sword's clang still lingered in her ears, and she involuntarily moved away slightly.

Her thoughts immediately changed, and she decided to retract her initial impression that Meng Yuxiu was a decent person; such a decisive and ruthless person was truly terrifying.

"General, you're being too unreasonable. Look at this pillar; repairing it will cost a lot of money. As the saying goes, 'Behind the red gates, meat and wine go to waste, while on the road, frozen corpses lie.' If you have any spare money, give it to those who need it," Chang Lili said ingratiatingly as she walked toward Meng Yuxiu.

Meng Yuxiu glanced at her with interest: "People who need money? For example..."

“For example, General, the doctor prescribed medicine for my mother-in-law, but I can’t afford any of it. Please help me to the end, and see this through to the end. If something happens to my mother-in-law here, wouldn’t it damage the reputation of the General’s Mansion?”

Hearing Chang Lili's shameless remarks, Meng Yuxiu remained silent. He pulled the sword off the pillar and examined it carefully, as if he was afraid the pillar would damage the sword.

"Are you threatening me?" His gaze turned slightly cold as he scrutinized Chang Lili.

Chang Lili hurriedly waved her hands: "How could that be? How could that be? Even if I were ungrateful, I wouldn't dare to speak rudely to you. Here, lend me some money, and I promise to pay you back later!"

As she spoke, she held up three fingers, as if she were swearing an oath to heaven.

Meng Yuxiu knew she was telling the truth; her every move in the general's mansion was under his watchful eye. But for some reason, he just didn't want to agree to her outright. He wanted to see how she tried to find a solution.

"How can I trust you? What if you take the money and run away?" Meng Yuxiu said casually as he walked into the room.

Chang Lili felt that he was taking advantage of her kindness, but since she needed his help, she could only follow him obediently, not daring to make a scene.

The two continued their back-and-forth maneuvering for a while, until Chang Lili finally lost her temper and was about to explode when Meng Yuxiu suddenly said, "Go directly to Mingyi Pavilion to get the medicine. Mingyi Pavilion owes our General's Mansion a great favor. Just say you are from my Mansion, and they will pack the medicine for you."

Chang Lili blinked blankly, both surprised and delighted.
