Chapter 728. Something's definitely on his mind.

Chapter 728 Something's definitely on his mind.

"Mom is fine."

Shen Jingjing forced a smile, not wanting her daughter to overthink it: "I've probably been busy with a lot of work lately, and I'm a bit overwhelmed."

Shen Ci and Shen Li exchanged a suspicious glance, but did not press the matter further. Shen Li took the initiative to pick up the plate of shredded potatoes and head to the kitchen, saying, "I'll throw this away. Let's eat other dishes."

During the meal, Shen Ci would glance at her mother from time to time, still feeling that something was wrong with her.

Even when it's just her and her mother at home during dinner, the atmosphere is usually cheerful and lively. But today, her mother was unusually quiet, clearly preoccupied.

“Mom, if you encounter any difficulties in your business, you can tell me,” Shen Ci couldn’t help but say.

Shen Jingjing put a piece of beef rib into her daughter's bowl: "It's okay, Mom can handle it. Your aunt also said she'll come to help me in a few days, so you don't need to worry about me."

Have you seen Gao Zhan recently?

Shen Ci shook her head: "He's been very busy lately. He was transferred from the inpatient department to the obstetrics and gynecology outpatient department to see patients. He said that there are a lot of pregnant women in the month or two after Valentine's Day, and the department is too busy to keep up."

Then there was a moment of silence at the table.

Shen Ci looked at her mother and found her holding a bowl, lost in thought, clearly not listening to her.

"mom?"

"Ah." Shen Jingjing nodded, snapping out of her reverie. "You'll be starting school soon too, we should make time to see each other more often."

Shen Ci frowned slightly, looking worried.

Shen Li noticed too: "Mom, are you feeling unwell?"

"No, I don't feel uncomfortable."

Shen Ci hesitated for a moment, then said in a half-command tone, "I'm going to the hospital to see Gao Zhan tomorrow. Mom, you come with me. I'll take you for a check-up."

“Didn’t we have a check-up last year? There were no problems at all,” Shen Jingjing said.

"That was half a year ago. You need to have regular checkups, otherwise you won't know if there's a problem with your health. Don't cook tomorrow morning, come to the hospital with me on an empty stomach."

Shen Jingjing pursed her lips, but didn't refute it in the end. After all, the physical examination was a serious matter. The family didn't have to worry about money now, so the most important thing was to be healthy so that they could enjoy life. This was what her daughter said, and she thought it made a lot of sense.

So the next morning, Shen Ci set her alarm and got up at seven o'clock.

"Mom, didn't you sleep well? You look terrible."

Seeing her mother's slightly sallow and dull complexion, and obvious dark circles under her eyes, Shen Ci asked worriedly, "Don't you always sleep well when you're tired?"

Shen Jingjing touched her face: "Do you look bad? I slept very well!"

She lied; she only managed to fall asleep around 3 or 4 a.m. and slept for three or four hours.

My mind is in turmoil, a complete mess, and I can't sleep at all.

She wanted to drive, but her daughter stopped her, saying, "Let me drive."

Upon arriving at the hospital, Shen Ci led her mother through each procedure, from registration to blood tests and X-rays.

Shen Jingjing was very cooperative, but she was clearly lacking in energy and spirit.

After a lot of work, I had a thorough check-up from head to toe. Some reports would take one or two days to arrive, but the reports I received showed that there were no problems.

Shen Ci felt a little relieved, and Shen Jingjing smiled when she saw this: "See, Mom said she's fine."

“I was worried about you because you weren’t feeling well.” Shen Ci sighed helplessly and looked at her mother, saying, “Since you’re physically fine, then you must be having something on your mind.”

"Mom, what exactly happened yesterday? You were acting very strangely. I didn't say much to you, but you need to explain it to me now."

Shen Jingjing smiled calmly and shook her head as if nothing was wrong: "I don't have anything on my mind, don't overthink it."

Shen Jingjing was reluctant to tell her daughter what was on her mind; she found it difficult to talk about.

Moreover, the truth of this matter is still unknown, so we don't want to make a big blunder later.

"You should go check on Gao Zhan. I'm going to the company." Shen Jingjing said, holding out her hand: "Give me the car keys."

"You can even mix up sugar and salt, how can I trust you to drive?" Shen Ci said firmly, "I'll take you there, or you can take a taxi. You can't drive."

"Then I'll take a taxi." Shen Jingjing chose to take a taxi without hesitation. Afraid that her daughter would keep asking questions, she quickly waved to her daughter and left the hospital.

Shen Ci watched her mother's retreating figure with a slightly darkened expression. Since her mother was unwilling to talk about it, she didn't press the matter, but she was certain that her mother had something on her mind.

Then she called her aunt via video.

"Auntie, didn't you bring my mom lunch yesterday? Did you notice anything unusual about her?"

Upon hearing this, Shen Yingying looked surprised: "Something's not right? No, she's in a good mood and has almost finished all the food I brought."

"What's wrong? Is something wrong with your mother?" Shen Yingying asked back.

Shen Ci truthfully told her aunt what she had seen and what she had guessed.

"Huh?" Shen Yingying exclaimed in surprise, "You mixed up sugar and salt? How is that possible! Your aunt's husband and I have been dealing with these two seasonings every day for decades and have never made a mistake."

"Did you notice she seemed distracted after she got home that night?"

Shen Ci nodded.

Shen Yingying recalled, "I didn't see anything special at your mother's place yesterday. The big boss who's been pursuing your mother sent over a bouquet of flowers, but he didn't show up. Then a client came, and your mother personally received her. She was a very elegant woman surnamed Wen. The two of them didn't talk much; it was just normal business communication."

"Then, when they were seeing Ms. Wen off, they ran into your mother's friend who came to deliver bird's nest to her. Your mother called her... what was her name again..."

Shen Ci subconsciously reminded her, "Sister Mo Ru?"

"Yes!" Shen Yingying immediately realized, "It was Sister Moru. Sister Moru also knows Ms. Wen. They seemed to have a good relationship, but they only chatted for a few words before leaving the Pure Realm together. Then I packed up the lunchbox and left too. Your mother was fine when I left."

After listening to her aunt's recollection, Shen Ci felt a little more at ease, wondering if she was overthinking things.

Just as I was about to speak, I heard my aunt suddenly say, "Oh right, after I left, when I was waiting for a ride-hailing car on the roadside, I saw that Sister Mo Ru go back."

"Aci, do you know this Moru?"

"I know her. I'll ask her if anything happened afterward."

"Okay, if anything happens, remember to let me know, don't make me worry."

Shen Ci hung up the phone and sent a message to Chen Moru: "Aunt Moru, are you available for a video call now? I need to talk to you about something."

Soon, Chen Moru took the initiative to reply to the video call.

The video call connected, and Chen Moru, sitting in her office at the company, couldn't help but smile when she saw Shen Ci on the screen: "Ah Ci, it's been a long time."

"It's been a long time since I've seen Aunt Moru."
