Day 5 Heading North

The car jolted slightly.

Xiong Xue no longer trembled as he asked, "Did you run over someone?" He only moved his lips and muttered a few words to himself.

Suffering can make people grow quickly, even if the person in question doesn't necessarily want to achieve it.

"Gah—Gah—"

A black crow flew past Xia Ning's eyes.

The rain poured down, and flashes of lightning occasionally streaked across the sky, accompanied by rumbling thunder that seemed both near and far.

Xia Ning glanced at the road sign. At their current speed, it would take another two hours to reach the neighboring city. She wondered if there would be troops guarding it.

An hour later, the rain subsided, and Xia Ning increased the car's speed accordingly, getting closer and closer to the new town.

Xiong Xue sat up straight, a little nervous. Would the soldiers stationed there let them through? They probably would. They had no wounds, and they were residents of Gansu. Gansu had developed rapidly in recent years and achieved remarkable diplomatic success, making it a country that had a voice in the world.

At most, it'll just involve undressing for a full-body checkup.

Xiong Xue tried to think positively, hoping he might meet other survivors from the Gan Kingdom and be escorted to the embassy by the military.

Meimi remained silent, staring blankly out the window.

Xia Ning felt that the most contradictory thing about Mei Mi was that she claimed her fiancé was away on a business trip and wouldn't be coming back, yet she never mentioned him or expressed any concern for him during the trip.

Xiong Xue was too preoccupied to notice that Xia Ning, however, was suspicious of her "fiancé".

That well-stocked basement was clearly meant for seclusion, so why did she voluntarily come out and save Xiong Xue?

Because of kindness? That answer might fool Xiong Xue, but don't fool yourself too.

Why didn't she, being so kind, help her familiar neighbors, her parents and relatives, or her fiancé's family?

Is there anything different about Xiong Xue?

Young, easily fooled... looking to seduce Chinese people?

Xia Ning had been thinking, and Mei Mi had probably realized that she was no ordinary person. Only Xiong Xue was caught in the middle and was trying to cover for both sides.

Xia Ning sometimes wonders, is this the legendary "clear-minded stupidity"?

Perhaps that's what Memi saw in him?

As time passed, Xia Ning's car finally entered the territory of M City. However, what awaited them was not gun barrels or a warm welcome, but a dilapidated fortress and hordes of zombies.

Without a doubt, M City has fallen!

The atmosphere inside the car became heavy again.

Xia Ning didn't hesitate at all and stepped on the gas pedal to the floor.

With so many zombies, it would take forever to kill them all; we could only pass through in one go.

The car crashed through the roadblocks, the metallic scraping sound attracting a steady stream of zombies to swarm towards it.
