They went their separate ways.

Xiong Xue is no longer the naive and innocent kid who would shout "We're one of you!" and spill all his secrets the moment he saw Xia Ning.

He caught Xia Ning's look, quickly understood, said nothing, sped up, and buried himself in packing the supplies.

Urged on by the soldiers, they got back into the messy vehicle.

Xiong Xue gently touched the twins' little faces, forced a smile, and said, "Actually, it's alright. When they were checking me, one of the soldiers reminded me that I shouldn't shake the babies, as it would affect their health. I even got a warning from his superior."

Xia Ning guessed that it was probably the young man who had been peeking at the twins. If it was because he also had young children at home that he felt sorry for them, then it would be alright.

The two people drove across the border.

Along the way, the guards at the gate demanded a second toll—no, this time it was protection money—from Xia Ning and her companions for the bullets they had wasted protecting them while killing zombies.

If Xia Ning's car hadn't looked so dilapidated, these people might have impounded it.

Xiong Xue said through gritted teeth, "I really thank you for everything, including your ancestors for eighteen generations."

The other person couldn't understand Mandarin, but could understand "thank you," and even mocked him as a coward to his teammates.

Similarly, Xiong Xue also mastered foreign language swear words without a teacher, which helped him develop a habit of constantly uttering polite greetings with a smile.

Xia Ning felt that if Xiong Xue were given a chance, he would definitely take back his words, "Actually, it's not so bad."

Xia Ning told Xiong Xue that the embassy would send someone to coordinate, and that he should prepare his belongings in advance.

Upon hearing this, Xiong Xue reacted even more strongly than when he was asked to be searched: "Aren't you coming back with me?"

His face was red and his neck was thick, and he kept firing off like a machine gun: "You've seen the situation now. This is how the army is managed. They openly seize supplies. What kind of chaos would other places be in? Our soldiers will never take a single needle or thread from the people."

Xiong Xue: "Do you believe in the end of the world? Gansu will be the last chaotic country in the world."

Xia Ning: "I believe you."

Why else would Memi have died hoping her child would go to the land of Gan?

Xiong Xue hesitated, "Then you..."

Xia Ning looked intently into his eyes: "I have my own mission. We're not on the same path. Aren't you relying on me too much?"

Xiong Xue's nostrils twitched, his mouth trembled, and after a long while, he let out a low growl.

"What kind of bullshit mission is this? Is it more important than staying alive?"

Xia Ning sighed and said, "You may have misunderstood me. I don't have such noble sentiments. Everything I do is to survive."

Xiong Xue didn't know if he had listened or how much he had heard; he slumped his shoulders in dejection.

"I see."

He packed all the baby supplies into his bag, keeping only a few packs of compressed biscuits for himself.

Xia Ning saw it all, but said nothing.

The embassy staff arrived faster than expected. One of them was a young man. His first words to Xia Ning and her group were, "You've come at the right time. The main force will be leaving in two hours. Hurry up and pack your things. Each person can only take one handbag."

Xiong Xue was taken aback: "What about the rest of the people?"

The staff member who identified himself as Guo Xiangyang said with a wry smile, "Didn't you hear our broadcast? If possible, try to go to the embassy for a collective evacuation. If the journey is long, we suggest you stock up on food and find shelter."

The implication is that one should pray for good fortune.

Guo Xiangyang added, "Hurry up and pack your things. Space on the plane is limited; each person can only bring one small carry-on bag." He glanced at the twins in Xiong Xue's arms and sighed, "You can bring an extra bag."

Xia Ning said, "I'm not going. Only he will go with you."

Guo Xiangyang didn't ask why, he only said, "Have you thought this through? This is the last time we'll evacuate a large number of people. We don't know when the next one will be."

Xia Ning nodded firmly, then asked, "Do you know about the Northern Research Institute?"

Guo Xiangyang said, "I heard that the North is building a survivor base. Above this city is an ancient city that they call Utopia."

Xia Ning thanked her.

Guo Xiangyang asked a second time, "Are you sure you don't want to come with us?"

Xia Ning answered without even blinking: "I'm sure."

He glanced at his sister, whose skin was smooth and shiny, and knew that the young woman in front of him was no ordinary person.

Guo Xiangyang didn't try to persuade him anymore. He told Xiong Xue to take the child and backpack and get into his car. There were too many foreigners around who wanted to evacuate with Gan Guo. He had already wasted a lot of time, and in just a short while, many people were already secretly envious.

In the apocalypse, people going mad can be terrifying.

During this period, many Chinese died in front of the Chinese embassy.

One reason was jealousy; they couldn't bear to see their fellow countrymen escape their suffering.

Secondly, it's wishful thinking that killing a Chinese person will allow them to take the plane in his place.

Guo Xiangyang even made two wigs for Xiong Xue to wear, because black hair attracts more than just zombies in this land.

Just before Xiong Xue boarded the embassy car, he looked at Xia Ning with red eyes and asked, "Sister, will we ever meet again?"

Xia Ning didn't answer, she just waved and said, "Goodbye."

She and Xiong Xue met in the first year of the biohazard, spent five days together, and then parted ways.

Xia Ning offered her most sincere blessings—

Hopefully, ten or twenty years from now, Xiong Xue will be able to recall his dark past while still alive.

Only those who have a vision of the future can envision it.

The presence of military personnel does not guarantee that a city is safe and orderly.

Xia Ning bid farewell to Xiong Xue and the twins, planning to continue north alone with her cat. The streets along the way were full of signs of vandalism and looting, as well as the remains of various Molotov cocktails. Moreover, she could sense various malicious prying eyes from under the tightly closed windows.
