Chapter 31: The Umbrella in Her Heart

Chapter 31: The Umbrella in Her Heart

Chapter Thirty-One: The Umbrella Held in Her Heart

Wen Jin hurriedly looked up and met a pair of impatient eyes.

He held a black umbrella in one hand, standing gracefully behind Wen Jinye. The scent of soap emanating from him wafted through the rain, inexplicably calming Wen Jinye's anxiety.

Behind him, Xu Xiangbai ran towards them, splashing through puddles. "Brother Jing, the driver's here. Let's go. The car can't get in this way if you go this way."

As they got closer, they discovered that Fu Yanjing's spotless school uniform was stained with large patches of orange beverage.

"Holy crap, what's going on? Who told you to get wet?"

His umbrella tilted slightly, and water droplets fell onto Wen Jinye's brow bone.

Water droplets fell down along the ends of her hair.

Fu Yanjing glanced at him and said, "If you don't know how to use an umbrella, leave it for someone who needs it."

As he spoke, he snatched the umbrella from Xu Xiangbai's palm and held it over Wen Jinye's head.

Raindrops pattered against the umbrella.

Through the rain curtain that blocked her view, Wen Jin finally got a clear look at the person who had come.

With a high nose bridge and prominent brow bones, her classic peach blossom eyes drooped down, giving her a somewhat aloof appearance.

He was very famous at school. He was handsome, arrogant, and had a very good relationship with Xu Xiangbai, a rich second-generation who spent money like it was nothing. He was the object of affection for many girls at school.

But it seems he has a girlfriend, He Jiayu, who is a very popular senior in high school.

She was the only girl around Fu Yanjing who could eat with them and walk home with them after school.

Wen Jin also resembled a still puppet.

Unexpectedly, in such a miserable and desperate moment, someone actually appeared behind me.

"What are you standing there for? Go on."

Under the shadow of extreme fear, any bit of care could become her lifeline.

Wen Jin's taut string snapped completely when an umbrella was held over her head.

The rain no longer dripped into her eyes, but her vision became increasingly blurry.

Her school uniform sleeves were soaked, and she couldn't wipe away her tears no matter what she did.

Wen Jin gripped the umbrella handle tightly and said in a choked voice, "Thank you."

Xu Xiangbai huddled under Fu Yanjing's umbrella, belatedly realizing the strange situation. "Brother Jing, you're not here to be a hero and save the damsel in distress, are you?"

Fu Yanjing frowned as he looked at the stains on his school uniform. "It was just something I did on the spur of the moment."

Tan Donglin realized what was happening after he saw that the man was wearing the Jiangbei High School uniform.

Pointing at Wen Jinye, he cursed, "Wen Jinye, you've got some nerve, daring to call for backup?"

The ignored group lost patience and started shouting threats, "What's going on with you guys? Young man, if you want to play the hero, you'd better find out who's in charge of this Mingshui Lane area!"

Xu Xiangbai despised this kind of person the most. He poked his ear and said angrily, "Speak louder, tell me who it is? It's not you, is it?"

The leader snorted coldly, "You're lucky you have eyes."

"Hahahaha," Xu Xiangbai's arrogant laughter echoed in the rain. "I didn't realize you were a turtle, you even wear a mask when you go out?"

One sentence completely enraged the group, and several thugs rolled up their sleeves.

Wen Jin didn't want them to be dragged into her mess either. "You guys should leave quickly, these people are not easy to mess with."

"Don't worry," Xu Xiangbai replied, making the call. "Although we are outnumbered, we can still win by spending money."

Fu Yanjing merely scoffed, "How intimidating are you?"

This remark thoroughly enraged the leader of the blond-haired thugs.

"Do you really want to die, you brat?"

Upon seeing this, Tan Donglin, as if to show his loyalty, threw down the umbrella in his hand and said, "Brother, I can handle this kind of person myself."

He rushed straight towards Fu Yanjing.

However, before the fist, which was raised in mid-air, could fall, it was kicked away by Fu Yanjing.

Fu Yanjing even held the umbrella in one hand, and with the other hand easily threw the man down into the mud. Fu Yanjing's shoe stepped on Tan Donglin's chest, looking down at him, "So eager to find a grave?"

Tan Donglin was unable to move.

Another group of thugs were eager to try their luck.

However, before they could make a move, Mingshui Lane was surrounded by a group of bodyguards in black.

Xu Xiangbai exaggeratedly cursed, "Damn it!" feeling deeply unfair. "Brother Jing, your life is still more valuable. Back in junior high, I spent money to fight someone, and two bodyguards came back then."

Fu Yanjing didn't respond to that, but simply said, "Go buy me a few drinks."

"I'll take the one on the ground."

A short while later, the bodyguard came out carrying a box.

Fu Yanjing slowly pulled open the tabs of soda cans and smashed them onto Tan Donglin one after another.

"Remember? Don't litter."

Tan Donglin sobbed, unable to speak, his face bruised and swollen, and kept waving his hands, begging for mercy.

The last bottle of beverage hit Tan Donglin on the forehead. Fu Yanjing finally stopped, his contemptuous gaze as if looking at trash. "Apologize."

Tan Donglin shakily got up, not daring to do anything rash, "I...I'm sorry, I shouldn't have thrown the drink at you."

"Not with me."

Fu Yanjing grabbed Tan Donglin by the neck and dragged him in front of Wen Jinye. "Apologize to her."

"I'm...I'm sorry, cousin."

Fu Yanjing's voice held a hint of sarcasm, "So you know she's your cousin?"

Tan Donglin had never seen anything like this before, and he was on the verge of tears: "I really know I was wrong, just let me get out of here."

"Stop asking about the color of a girl's underwear, okay?"

Tan Donglin nodded vigorously, "I understand, I understand!"

Fu Yanjing seemed to have seen through Tan Donglin's character; he could guess everything. He warned her indifferently, "Don't cause her any trouble after I leave."

"Yes, yes, yes..."

"Get lost."

Tan Donglin felt a great weight lifted off his shoulders and ran away, almost stumbling.

Mingshui Lane has returned to tranquility.

Xu Xiangbai put his arm around Fu Yanjing's shoulder. "Let's go, Ajing. There's a ball game tonight, don't let it interfere."

"Let's go."

Looking at the boy's tall figure, Wen Jin, as if possessed, spoke up, "Thank you."

Xu Xiangbai answered her, "It's alright, Brother Jing said it was just something that could be done easily."

"Your umbrella."

Fu Yanjing didn't even turn his head. "Just hang in there."

...

That umbrella briefly sheltered her from the rain, but it remained a constant presence in Wen Jinye's heart.

Perhaps in retrospect, it was just a casual act on his part.

In the heart of a sixteen-year-old girl, he was a ray of light that pierced through the darkness.

Despite all that, he had no recollection of it.

Rainwater meandered outside the car window, and the rising mist on the glass blurred Wen Jin's features.

The air was thick with the dampness of rain.

The sound of horns blaring was constant on the road.

Wen Jin also thought unwisely that perhaps even if it happened ten thousand times, she would still fall in love with Fu Yanjing again at that time.

She never imagined that she would be trapped for so many years.

She has experienced too many unpredictable ups and downs in her life, and Wen Jin can only let things take their course.

But when it came to Fu Yanjing, she was brave enough to apply to a university in Hong Kong, just to gamble on the possibility of meeting him again.

As it turns out, she did succeed.

She was grazed by his car and fell to the ground. The way he looked at her as he got out of the car was so unfamiliar.

Yet it still brought tears to Wen Jin's eyes.

At first, I thought I would be content just to see him again.

Fu Yanjing's contempt was the greatest price she paid for her greed.
