Chapter 22 Shadows

A few days have passed in the blink of an eye, and tomorrow is the day for new students to register.

Although it had nothing to do with Wen Mo, who was in the senior year, he was still a little worried about Xia Lian's situation.

For some reason, the closer it got to the start of school, the more off Xia Lian's condition became.

At first, I thought Xia Lian was just experiencing back-to-school anxiety, which was why she looked so pale, but over time I realized something was wrong.

No matter how anxious you are, you can't be this anxious.

Xia Lian's complexion was still terrible during dinner; it was so gloomy it looked like it could drip water, as if she had lost her soul.

"Xiao Lian." Wen Mo called softly, a little worried about Xia Lian's mental state.

She didn't touch the food on the table, she just kept staring at the table, and the rice was still piled high in her bowl.

Those eyes, which were already listless, were now even dimmer, as if they couldn't even focus.

Xia Lian held her chopsticks, lost in thought.

Seeing that she didn't react, Wen Mo frowned, then raised his voice a little, "Xiao Lian?" At the same time, he waved in front of her.

"ah?"

It was only then that Xia Lian slowly realized someone was calling her. She slowly raised her head, revealing her slightly sickly pale face. "What... is wrong?"

Seemingly unaware of her own poor condition, she tilted her head and looked at Wenmo with a puzzled expression.

“You’ve been so absent-minded lately,” Wen Mo sighed, gazing intently at Xia Lian.

I picked up her rice bowl and then ladled out another bowl of rice from the rice cooker, as the rice had gotten cold.

"Eat first. You haven't been eating properly these past few days. You're already thin, and if you don't eat properly, you'll become even thinner and more emaciated," Wen Mo said with concern.

Upon hearing this, Xia Lian felt a slight, uncomfortable hunger pang in her stomach, which hadn't eaten much. She nodded gently and mechanically ate her meal with her chopsticks.

Perhaps she was really hungry, because after finishing a full bowl, she, who has a small appetite, surprisingly ordered a second bowl of rice.

When the rice in the bowl was almost gone, Xia Lian put down her chopsticks and said softly, "I'm full..."

Seeing this, Wen Mo pushed away his rice bowl and pulled his chair forward, instantly bringing the two of them much closer together.

"Come and tell me, why have you been in such a bad state these past few days?" he said gently, placing Xia Lian's small hand in his palm, not caring whether it was too intimate.

Xia Lian is very clingy to Wen Mo, so she can't resist this tactic. If you want her to tell the truth, you can only use the "handsome man" strategy.

“You must have something on your mind, and it’s about school.”

As if he had guessed what was on her mind with just a few words, Xia Lian's eyes trembled slightly, and she slowly lowered her eyes. A few strands of hair clung to her cheeks, and her small face, which was not very fleshy to begin with, was hidden in her hair, making her look somewhat fragile.

"I……"

She opened her mouth, seemingly still hesitant.

There's hope.

Seeing her like this, Wen Mo had a few guesses in his mind, so he quickly moved closer and stared intently at her with his sincere eyes.

The two were very close, but neither of them spoke; the silence was so profound that they could almost hear each other's heartbeats.

"It's okay, just tell me, I'll definitely understand." He pressed his advantage, patting his chest to assure her.

Hearing these words, Xia Lian slowly raised her head and met his eyes, "Wen Mo..."

"Yes, I'm here."

"I... kind of hate school."

As she spoke, she gently squeezed Wenmo's hand, as if something had flashed through her mind, her breathing became rapid, and a hint of fear appeared in her eyes.

Gradually, Xia Lian unconsciously gripped Wen Mo's hand tightly. Feeling her trembling little hand, he seemed to realize something.

"Don't be nervous, we're at home now, don't be afraid, don't be afraid..." He gently comforted Xia Lian, patting her back lightly. Xia Lian's whole body was tense, and her eyes were filled with panic.

It took quite a while for Xia Lian's condition to gradually return to normal, but the fear in her eyes lingered for a long time, making it hard to imagine what she had experienced at her previous school.

Her heartbeat echoed in her ears, her throat was dry, as if a wad of cotton was stuck in it, "I...I hate them..."

Who are they?

"At my previous school...they bullied me..."

Xia Lian buried her head between her legs, as if she had exhausted all her strength to squeeze out these words, and her voice inexplicably became hoarse.

After saying that, she stopped talking and just kept holding Wenmo's hand.

A cold glint flashed in Wen Mo's eyes, but it quickly disappeared. The most important thing now was to soothe Xia Lian's emotions.

"So that's why you don't want to go to school."

"Mmm..." came a muffled reply from her head buried between her legs.

Wenmo scratched his head, unsure of what to do.

This is a bit tricky.

Psychological trauma is always the hardest thing to overcome. Once a person develops a psychological trauma related to something, it is very likely that they will never be able to overcome it in their lifetime.

He quickly realized the weight of those words: he was Xia Lian's first friend.

When Xia Lian was bullied, she didn't have a single friend around to stop her, so she could only passively take the beating.

“Then, let’s go back to class in a few months. I’ll ask my dad to help you get a leave of absence…” As he finished speaking, he took out his phone, ready to call Wen Yiquan.

Unexpectedly, Xia Lian suddenly raised her head, shaking it anxiously, "No need...! I'm just scared, but I can go to school..."
