Chapter 36 He Hates Me

"You have company."

"You have a boyfriend, so it's okay."

"What a waste of time, let's go."

The guys who had originally planned to strike up a conversation all wisely left.

"You're quite popular." Wen Mo squinted at their departing figures, his words unknowingly carrying a hint of jealousy.

He rested his chin on his hand, pretending not to care much, but in reality, he was silently processing this feeling called "possessiveness".

It's one thing to strike up a conversation, but to do it in a whole group is a bit too much, isn't it? My cousin is already shy, and if we scare her, Wen Mo is sure to make those guys fly away.

After a while, Wen Mo felt a little better and casually said, "I should have known better than to eat in the cafeteria. I didn't expect to run into someone trying to chat me up."

"To...pick up a girl?"

Xia Lian tilted her head, seemingly not quite understanding.

"It's a bad thing. If a guy you don't know comes up to you and starts a conversation, that's flirting."

Hearing this, she nodded as if she understood, "I'll remember."

Having resolved a major issue on her mind, Wen Mo felt much more relaxed, but the thought of so many men trying to flirt with her cousin still made her feel annoyed.

Get out of here, all of you.

He patted his chest, let out a long breath, then stood up and pulled Xia Lian to get food.

"Let's go get some food."

Because there weren't many people in the cafeteria, most of the dishes were still available and hot, and the cafeteria ladies' hands never trembled.

Since not many people eat in the cafeteria, it's better to let the students eat more than to sell too much food unsold every day, which would be a waste.

"I haven't eaten at the cafeteria all summer, and I really miss the taste." Wen Mo carefully examined today's dishes while holding a tray, and Xia Lian followed obediently behind him with her tray, like a little penguin.

"Big sister, I want this, that, and... please give me a little of this too, thank you big sister~" He called out "big sister" in a crisp voice, which made the cafeteria auntie give him a few extra spoonfuls.

Xia Lian, standing behind her, peeked inside without saying a word, simply pointing with her finger at the dish she wanted to eat.

"Why are you eating so much vegetarian food?"

Wen Mo turned around and frowned immediately. There was hardly any meat on her plate; it was mostly tofu and vegetables.

"This is enough for me." She shook her head, squeezed in front of her cousin, wanting to rush to pay, but then remembered that she didn't have a meal card, so she could only stand there dumbfounded.

"Come back first." He was somewhat speechless, and his tone unconsciously became a little harsher.

Hearing the change in tone, Xia Lian was a little startled. She hurriedly lowered her head and took small steps back to Wen Mo's side.

Wen Mo didn't say anything, but asked the aunt to give her more meat and vegetables, then took out her phone and showed her payment code, "Our school accepts both meal cards and mobile payments, either way is fine."

He began to explain, his tone flat, revealing no emotion whatsoever.

Xia Lian followed cautiously behind him the whole time, thinking that she had just angered Wen Mo, and her movements became much stiffer.

When the two returned to their previous positions, the atmosphere became somewhat tense. Neither of them spoke. Xia Lian just stared at her plate, while Wen Mo kept staring at his phone.

He looked at the deduction notification from earlier. His portion cost 15 yuan, while Xia Lian's portion cost 10 yuan. If Wen Mo hadn't added meat and vegetables later, it probably wouldn't have cost even 6 yuan.

After a while, Wen Mo couldn't stand the strange atmosphere any longer and broke the silence, "Xiao Lian, you're not trying to save me money again, are you?"

She lowered her head, first shaking it, then nodding.

Xia Lian was simply used to eating inexpensive dishes, just like she was in junior high school, when her family didn't have much money left.

Seeing her reaction, Wen Mo guessed what was going on more or less. He reached out and stroked Xia Lian's head, a smile spreading across his face. "Alright, let's eat."

Upon hearing this, Xia Lian hesitated for a moment before raising her head, her gaze towards him cautious.

"Aren't you angry anymore...?"

Wenmo was stunned. "Huh? Was I angry just now?"

He doesn't remember being angry, and how could he possibly be angry? He always feels sorry for Xia Lian.

Hearing that Wen Mo wasn't angry, Xia Lian, who had been cautious, immediately breathed a sigh of relief, and her dull eyes regained some clarity.

"What, did I look that scary just now?" Wen Mo joked with a smile.

Xia Lian shook her head.

It wasn't that she was afraid Wen Mo would get angry, but that she was afraid he would hate her after getting angry. Even if he already hated her, Xia Lian would still think about getting close to him.

"Does Wenmo hate me...?" she asked blankly, a hint of doubt in her voice.

Upon hearing this, Wen Mo almost spat out the food in his mouth, unsure how to react. These words reminded him of the childish things he and his friends said when he was a child.

"Do you hate me? Why won't you play with me?"

"I was just faking it with them, but I'm really having fun with you!"

These words completely stunned the young Wen Mo at the time, and he still finds it a bit funny to think about them now.

"I won't dislike you if you eat more."

Wen Mo said casually, like an older brother coaxing a child.

Upon hearing this, Xia Lian, who had been feeling down because of what had just happened, immediately brightened up and started eating, stuffing a mouthful of vegetables and a mouthful of rice into her mouth.
