It rained on and off for two weeks, and then it stopped. The spider plant by the window finally got some sunshine after almost half a month.
The streets are getting busier. With the New Year just around the corner, everyone is out buying New Year's goods that their homes still need. Everywhere is decorated with festive red decorations and lanterns.
Pei Family Villa
"Xiao Ke, I need to go out and deliver some documents to your father. A friend of mine is coming to visit today, so if you hear someone coming, please greet them." Pei's mother instructed her son, who was watching TV on the sofa, as she changed her shoes in the entryway.
Pei Ke waved his hand, "I know."
The TV was showing an animal documentary, with the lyrics, "Spring is here, it's here again..."
Pei Ke's mind was clearly not on the content of the television program; he was staring blankly at one spot, lost in thought.
Five minutes later, the door opened again.
Ms. Lin walked in, complaining all the while. "Seriously, they said they'd deliver the documents, but as soon as I stepped out, they called to say it wasn't necessary. This is just making things difficult for me," she said, though her face showed no sign of displeasure.
Seeing that her son was still in the same position as when she left, and worried that he might not be feeling well, Pei's mother changed her shoes and went to the sofa to sit next to Pei Ke.
"Xiao Ke, have you been feeling unwell lately? You always seem distracted."
"I'm fine, just in a bad mood." Pei Ke moved his leg, hiss—it was a little numb.
"Are you feeling down? Can you talk to your mother about it?" Pei's mother was worried because her son had been staring blankly at one spot for days. She often read news reports that teenagers tend to have many thoughts and that if parents don't handle things properly, it can easily develop into depression. The thought of her son becoming like that terrified her.
"It's nothing."
"Okay, then I won't say anymore," the son said, clearly not wanting to continue the conversation, as asking would only make things worse, so he decided to change the subject.
"Oh, by the way, the auntie who's coming later is my mom's classmate from junior high. We used to be really close, and we've kept in touch even after graduation. Later, she got into a dance academy and now tours all over the world every year. She's amazing. Oh, she also has a daughter who's the same age as you. I heard she goes to the same school as you. I wonder if you know her?"
Pei Ke didn't listen carefully to what his mother was saying. This time, he turned his eyes to the television screen, where cattle and sheep were grazing on the grassland, a scene of leisurely harmony.
A sound came from outside the door.
Ms. Lin kicked off the door and ran to open it. Her son is getting older and more thoughtful. He doesn't want to talk to his mother anymore and even acts indifferent. It's giving her a headache.
Hearing the noise outside the door, he quickly ran over.
"Ah Ran, it's been a long time." A tall figure stood at the door, her hair smoothly tied up in a bun at the back of her head, revealing her slender neck. She wore light makeup, and her eyebrows and eyes were gentle. When she saw Ms. Lin, her eyes curved into a smile, revealing a few wrinkles that showed the marks of time.
Upon seeing the person outside the door, Ms. Lin couldn't wait to give them a hug. "Ah Yuan, you're finally here." After the hug, Ms. Lin took the things from Xiao Yanyuan's hands and welcomed her in. Only then did she notice a little girl standing next to her.
"This must be Sasha. She's grown so much."
"Hello, Aunt Lin," Song Lisha greeted politely.
After everyone was seated in the living room, Ms. Lin patted Pei Ke on the shoulder and said, "Go to the kitchen and get the fruit I washed."
"Pei Ke! It really is you!" A surprised voice suddenly rang out.
As if to confirm, Song Lisha took a few more steps closer to him, "I thought I was seeing things because I didn't see your face clearly just now."
“You two know each other.” Xiao Yanyuan looked at her daughter and then at Pei Ke.
“We are classmates.” Song Lisha answered excitedly. She hadn’t quite realized it yet. She had been a little suspicious when her mother told her that this friend’s son was in the same school as her and also had the surname Pei. But it was more of an expectation than a suspicion. Now that she saw that her mother and Pei Ke’s mother were actually friends, she was overjoyed.
Pei Ke nodded, hummed in agreement, and moved to get the fruit.
Clearly, seeing Song Lisha brought to mind that blue love letter, which then conjured up even more unpleasant thoughts. Moreover, the person in front of him was too enthusiastic and too close, making him feel uncomfortable and wanting to keep a little distance.
"Since you're a classmate, that's great. You can stay here and keep your classmate company; you'll have something to chat about. I'll go get some fruit." Ms. Lin pressed down on Pei Ke's shoulders with both hands to help him sit back on the sofa, and then went to the kitchen.
Pei Ke watched his mother's cheerful steps speechlessly. He and Song Lisha were classmates, so why was she so happy?
The four of them sat on the sofa chatting, mainly Ms. Lin and Xiao Yanyuan. Xiao Yanyuan was often away on tour, and the two hadn't seen each other for a long time. They seemed to have endless things to talk about.
The two children were bored sitting there, so Pei Ke got up and went upstairs.
Seeing that the two adults were talking so enthusiastically, Song Lisha didn't pay much attention to her and followed Pei Ke to the balcony.
The boy she longed for was leaning on the balcony railing, the wind blowing against his forehead, a few stray hairs fluttering in the breeze, revealing his delicate features. The January wind was still quite chilly. She pulled her coat tighter around herself, looked at him, and suddenly hesitated to approach.
Thinking of the love letter she had secretly tucked into her exercise book, Song Lisha blushed slightly. She wondered if he had seen it, and if he had, why hadn't he reacted at all? She had waited for several days without Pei Ke contacting her, and she was starting to suspect that the letter had fallen out and gone unseen. Now that she finally had a chance to be alone with him, she wanted to ask him in person.
"Pei Ke, I have something to tell you." He finally mustered up his courage.
