Chapter Forty-Three: You Don't Understand

May, a month that hints at the quiet arrival of summer, is the season when gardenias bloom.

"The scent of this flower is amazing. Even from a distance, the fragrance fills my nose."

Several people sat on the lawn, hands behind their backs, legs casually stretched out in front. A pile of snacks lay around them, and not far away was a flower bed filled with gardenias, patches of white dotting the green branches. Although it was early summer, the sun was not gentle, and the white buds were slightly wilted by the heat, but that did not diminish their fragrance that filled the entire campus.

Jiang Ce stared blankly at a pure white, soft flower, lost in thought.

Luo Feng, who loved to make a fuss, didn't like seeing Jiang Ce looking like he came from a humble background. So he stood up slightly to steady himself and waved one hand in front of Jiang Ce's eyes, trying to bring him back to his senses.

Jiang Ce's recent low mood has increased the pressure on their group. He doesn't say much all day and likes to stare at something in a daze. His brothers can tell what's going on with just a little thought.

Ever since that basketball game that caused the crowd to gather, Jiang Ce has been going to the entrance of Class 2 every now and then, even though they are not in the same building, he doesn't mind the trouble.

At the time, they almost thought that Ce Ge and Su Xun's relationship was about to be finalized, and they secretly discussed how to take advantage of this opportunity to make a killing for him. Until one day, after Ce Ge went there, he came back with a strange expression.

Luo Feng was the one who first discovered it, but he didn't take it seriously at the time, thinking it was just that people in love have unstable moods and it would be fine in a while.

However, in the following days, Jiang Ce seemed preoccupied and stopped going to Class 2's classroom, so the others felt that something was wrong.

They also heard from people in their grade that the two had broken up, and since they were practically insiders, it was definitely not a breakup.

So it was only that noon that Ce couldn't help but confess his feelings, and Su Xun rejected Ce, which is why she's been so heartbroken these past few days.

Luo Feng couldn't stand it anymore, but he didn't know how to comfort people. He could spout a lot of nonsense, but over the years, Brother Ce had never given him a chance to comfort them. He was like a hard rock.

Finally, unable to bear it any longer, he said, "Brother Ce, it's okay to be rejected. With your qualifications, it's just that Su Xun is blind."

As she spoke, she stood up and patted Jiang Ce on the shoulder reassuringly.

Luo Feng, embarrassed, used his clumsy method, only to be met with a glare in return.

"Tsk, who told you I got rejected?" she said, brushing the hand off her shoulder with a look of disgust.

Luo Feng: ...

Zhang Zhihao: "Brother Ce, the whole grade is talking about something. We all know about it, so you don't need to hide it from us anymore."

She said I was bothering her, so she stopped going that way.

Luo Feng: ...

Zhang Zhihao: ...

What is this if not rejection? Is Brother Ce so infatuated with someone that he's practically brainwashed?

She continued, "She's such a good student, what if she doesn't get into high school because of me?"

"But Brother Ce, you're supposed to be dating her, not a saint!"

Luo Feng couldn't stand it anymore. How could Brother Ce say such things?

Of course not!

"You should just run over there, no, just have us bring her to you and say something like, 'If you don't listen to me, you'll see what happens!'"

This is the kind of behavior that Brother Ce should exhibit, instead of sitting here at a 45-degree angle gazing at the sky. He's clearly a fierce and intimidating school bully, so why is he pretending to be an artsy young man?

However, Luo Feng only thought these words to himself.

A hand gently tugged at him, "This is abducting a woman. I think Brother Ce is usually a pretty gentleman. You should keep this to yourself."

Zhang Zhihao disagreed; in his mind, Jiang Ce had a very good image.

Luo Feng shoved Zhang Zhihao aside, saying, "Get out of my way, what do you know, you bald guy?"

She turned to Jiang Ce, "Brother Ce, I really can't stand it anymore. If you keep going like this, I won't even recognize you anymore." Her tone was intense, as if she wanted to hit him awake with a stick.

Jiang Ce continued to stare at the clouds in the sky, his expression calm, blinking occasionally, it was unclear whether he had taken the words to heart.

After a long time

"I never intended to be with her."

The words were spoken softly and then vanished into the wind, as if they had never existed.

Luo Feng and Zhang Zhihao: ?!

He pushed himself up with his hands, then deftly brushed the grass off his pants. Looking down at the two incredulous people sitting on the ground, his eyes were calmer than ever before, his light-colored pupils appearing extremely pale in the sunlight.

"You just don't understand." With that, he strode away.

They just don't understand; he never intended to be with her in the first place.

Perhaps at the beginning I wasn’t really sure what I wanted to do.

Last year, when he heard someone discover them smoking in the hallway, he would have given them a stern warning, as was his usual practice. That's exactly what he did, which scared the person out.

I can't believe that person was so stupid. He didn't even try to hide properly, and I got caught.

He's timid and likes to think he's clever; he's utterly stupid.

But why did it end up like this?

It was probably because of those eyes—so clean yet timid, clearly terrified but pretending to be brave—that he felt a moment of tenderness.

Later, after asking around, he learned that this girl was so well-behaved, spoke softly, and had a small and soft body, just like the little white rabbit he used to keep.

He was restless since childhood, and most of the people around him were also rebellious and restless, including the girls. He knew many female classmates in regular classes who were more restrained at school, but once they left school, they were just like any other woman in society.
