Chapter Forty-Two: Joy and Bitterness

After that day, Su Xun's life became much calmer.

Jiang Ce never came to see her again, not even sending a text message. He must have lost face after being rejected so bluntly last time.

Jiang Ce is such a proud person, he's rarely rejected to his face, he must be angry.

People at the school sensed something was amiss. They had been coming over so frequently recently, and everyone privately assumed the two were together. The combination of the school bully and the model student sounded quite appealing, and they often gossiped about their relationship.

But Jiang Ce hasn't come even once recently, which makes people like him, who are usually bored to death at school, wonder what's going on.

The two must have broken up.

The two had differing opinions after breaking up.

Some people think that Jiang Ce dumped Su Xun. Jiang Ce is usually so arrogant, how could he like a little white rabbit forever? He must have dumped her after the novelty wore off. Su Xun has a soft personality and couldn't control Jiang Ce.

Another group of people believes that Su Xun initiated the breakup. It's well known that Su Xun is a top student with excellent grades; it's likely that after they got together, she realized the relationship was affecting her studies and thus broke up with Jiang Ce. Furthermore, their interactions always seemed to suggest that Jiang Ce preferred Su Xun.

The two groups argued fiercely, each believing they were right. Those watching the spectacle simply found it amusing; they were just there for the show.

But Su Xun didn't care about any of this. She just felt that everyone had too much imagination and too much free time. Moreover, she discovered another thing that was bothering her.

Pei Ke's attitude towards her has been strange lately.

Like two strangers, this reminded her of how it felt when the two of them first sat together. It was like being classmates for years but being polite to each other because they rarely interacted, never daring to be presumptuous in front of each other, and hiding all their personalities and little tempers.

But Su Xun knew that they were more than that; they both knew each other's hidden personalities, and it could be said that they were the only ones in the class who truly understood each other.

So Pei Ke did it on purpose.

So, why?

Neither of them were usually talkative, and now they had even less to say. They weren't leaning against the wall, so there was no situation where they needed to ask the people next to them to make way when they left.

The students in the two rows in front and behind them felt something unusual again near their seats. Unlike the low pressure around them last time, this time it was the opposite – very peaceful, but too peaceful, unlike their usual selves.

They all knew that Su Xun and Pei Ke were the most enviable pair of deskmates in the class. They were far ahead of everyone else in the class in terms of academic performance. Although Su Xun had come from behind to surpass them, Pei Ke deserved a lot of credit for it. Pei Ke's tutoring of Su Xun was praised by the teachers.

Furthermore, both of them have very attractive faces. Pei Ke goes without saying, and although Su Xun is a bit short, his face is really beautiful. The baby fat on his face is gradually fading, and he is becoming more and more refined. You can vaguely tell how amazing he will be when he grows up.

In fact, in the eyes of the students in Class 2, the relationship between Pei Ke and Su Xun was unusual. They had been deskmates since elementary school and were inseparable in junior high school. Moreover, Pei Ke was not very enthusiastic about many things and people, but he had extraordinary patience for Su Xun. Su Xun, who was not talkative, could also joke around with Pei Ke, which showed them another side of Pei Ke.

It was precisely because of this special connection that many people assumed they might like each other, but due to the strict school management, especially in Teacher Liu's class, they both tacitly agreed not to mention it.

That's why Song Lisha dislikes Su Xun and can't stand the way the two of them are together.

But these past few days, it seems like the two of them have had a fight, or rather, it doesn't seem like a fight. It's more like one of them is deliberately distancing themselves from the other, and the person being distancing themselves from notices it but doesn't know why, so they can only interact with people in the same way as usual.

However, Su Xun wasn't the type to be enthusiastic. Pei Ke not only didn't take the initiative to approach Su Xun but was also very distant and polite, so she naturally didn't try to win him over.

At this moment, the surrounding classmates finally realized that it was Pei Ke who took the initiative to provoke the girl when the two of them were always bickering.

It was as if he had discovered something extraordinary. Pei Ke wasn't averse to being close to people; he just didn't like being close to them. Nor was he born like a fairy who was above the mortal world and focused solely on his own affairs. He simply displayed all his lively nature in front of one person.

Since others were able to discover these things, Su Xun, as the person involved, naturally also discovered them.

The two spent some time together like strangers, which allowed Su Xun to gradually calm down.

She already had some inexplicable feelings for Pei Ke, so whenever Pei Ke made any move, it would make her think and worry a lot. She was afraid that he would dislike her, afraid that she had done something to upset him, and even more worried that he would discover her shameful thoughts and distance himself from her.

But this period of time has helped her figure out many things.

She remembered that things started to go wrong around noon when Jiang Ce last came to see her. Pei Ke seemed to have something to say to her that day, but Jiang Ce interrupted her, and when she came back, his tone had changed.

No, it may have started much earlier, but she just hadn't realized it then.

Those White Rabbit milk candies.

When someone came to deliver the candy, I wasn't there, but I was always seen. At first, I was a little surprised, but later I realized that the person was just delivering candy and I didn't think much of it. But after that simple drawing, things changed. That time, Pei Ke acted very strangely and swapped the candy box and the note.

The outline gradually became clear, as if something was about to break through the soil.

Su Xun discovered a big secret—she might not be the only one harboring secret thoughts.

Only someone who likes someone will feel unhappy when they discover that someone is treating them specially, and will get angry when someone leaves them out of the picture because they want to see someone else.

Even if none of these things are love, she must still be different to him.

Su Xun felt as if her heart had been struck heavily, like the sound of a great bell in a clock tower being struck, the echo of which could travel very far. She felt something slowly spreading through her heart, a subtle sweetness in her taste.

But this sweetness didn't last long. Soon, an even stronger bitterness surged up, more intense than the sweetness, completely overwhelming everything and occupying the entire space.

If you care, why stay away?

Did his feelings for her make him feel awkward and overwhelmed, so he wanted to destroy those nascent feelings before everything was settled, and sever them cleanly with a sharp blade before the vines could entangle him?

If that's really the case, she doesn't want to cause trouble or distress for him.

Su Xun calmed himself down, his gaze gradually hardening.
