Chapter 3: The Engagement Jade Pendant Disappears

Chapter 3: The Engagement Jade Pendant Disappears

Chang Xixi returned home and counted the stolen property one by one, but she could not find the jade pendant she remembered.

"Could it be that the scumbag Zhang Xiucai sold it?"

For Chang Xixi, missing a jade pendant meant losing a lot of money. She was so angry that she wanted to go back and beat up Zhang Xiucai again.

After counting the belongings, Chang Xixi walked around the house, not knowing where to hide them safely.

"The house is bare...there's not even a place to hide money." Chang Xixi sighed while lying on the bed, thinking about renovating this simple home. There should at least be a place to hide things, otherwise she would feel uneasy holding so much money.

Zhang Xiucai must be more than the only one in the village who is keeping an eye on her, the fake daughter of a wealthy family. To prevent any trouble, she must build a solid sheep pen to prevent wolves from stealing.

"Cough cough..." The occasional coughing sound coming from the next room caught Chang Xixi's attention. If she remembered correctly, the person living next door was her second brother Chang Hai.

In the original owner's memory, Chang Hai had crippled legs, was taciturn, and would not easily leave his room. He would faint outside during the day, and he must have tried to crawl out to help after hearing Zhu Youcai and others making trouble.

Thinking of this, Chang Xixi remembered a secret she had hidden from everyone in her previous life.

She possesses a mysterious space. Although the space is not large and can only store small items, the spiritual spring in the space has the miraculous power of curing diseases and saving lives. No matter how serious the disease is, it can be completely cured by long-term consumption of the spiritual spring water. Of course, the premise is that the patient can live to the time when the efficacy of the spiritual spring water is sufficient to completely cure the disease.

I wonder if the spatial spiritual spring followed her across time...

Just as I thought of this, a bright space suddenly appeared in my mind, and a clear spring was gurgling out in the middle of the space.

Seeing the familiar Space Spirit Spring, Chang Xixi was pleasantly surprised, "So the Space Spirit Spring is bound to my soul!"

She no longer hesitated, put all the jewelry and money into the small space, scooped out a pot of water from the space, and knocked on Chang Hai's door with the teapot and cup.

"Second brother."

She called out softly, and the coughing in the room instantly became quieter, obviously someone was trying to suppress it.

Chang Xixi pushed the door open and saw Chang Hai sitting on the bed. His skinny body swayed like a leaf, and he covered his mouth to muffle his cough.

"Second brother, are you okay?"

Chang Hai shook his head and said with difficulty: "I'm sorry for disturbing you."

"No, second brother, drink some water." Chang Xixi poured water for Chang Hai and sat on the edge of the bed with concern. Although they couldn't be called family, anyone who saw such a poor patient would not be able to help but feel sympathy, right?

After Chang Hai finished drinking the water, his coughing subsided. "Go back to sleep. It's late."

Chang Hai had no feelings for this strange sister and didn't even know how to get along with her. Now that he had calmed down, he just felt embarrassed.

"I can't sleep. Second brother, please tell me about what's happening in the village."

"What do you want to know?"

The first thing that came to Chang Xixi's mind was the cold man with the scent of medicine.

"I remember there was a sickly man at the foot of the mountain east of the village. Who was he?" Chang Xixi was not sure whether the man lived nearby, but she was indeed the man she met at the foot of the mountain.

Chang Hai thought about it carefully and said, "It should be Gu Rongyu, the scholar of the Gu family."

Chang Xixi frowned and muttered, "Why is it another scholar..."

"I heard from my mother that he suddenly fell seriously ill before taking the imperial examination and has been bedridden ever since. He is such a poor man." Chang Hai has very few memories of Gu Rongyu. He can't even remember what he looks like. He heard everything about Gu Rongyu from his family.

"What's wrong with him?"

"I don't know," Chang Hai shook his head. He seemed to be thinking of something taboo, and his face turned even paler. "But I heard that he won't live long."

Perhaps because they felt a sense of sympathy, Chang Hai spoke more and more unconsciously, and almost told everything that had happened in the Gu family over the past ten years.

After listening to Gu Rongyu's story, Chang Xixi only felt pity for him. He was a promising young man, but he fell ill before the imperial examination. Not only did he miss the examination, but he was also kicked out of the house by his stepmother. Now he can only wait to die in the small shabby house.

He worked so hard. Last night, in order to save her, he even used meat buns to lure the dog away.

"I've made up my mind!" Chang Xixi clenched her fists and made a decision, but before she could finish her words, she saw that her second brother had fallen asleep at some point.

Chang Xixi could only tiptoe out of the door, then rushed into the kitchen and started preparing breakfast for everyone.

My family is poor. We usually eat coarse rice and occasionally noodles. Breakfast is usually porridge, which has ten times more water than rice grains.

Chang Xixi looked at the rice jar that was almost empty, and thinking that she was a rich man now, she emptied the rice jar without hesitation and used it all to make porridge.

She sat in front of the stove, yawning. Now that she was no longer energetic, she began to feel sleepy. She waited in a daze until the pot boiled, then she beat a few eggs, stirred them, and poured them all into the pot.

The rich aroma of egg porridge soon overflowed from the kitchen. When Dou came in following the smell, the first thing he saw was that the rice jar was empty.

Her heart ached, but when she saw Chang Xixi smiling at her, she couldn't bear to scold her.

"Mom, please try the egg porridge I made!" Chang Xixi diligently scooped a bowl of thick porridge for Dou.

Dou took the porridge, but was reluctant to drink it. "I'll take it to your second brother."

"Okay, then remember to eat it yourself later."

Chang Xixi said this as she walked out holding a big bowl of porridge.

Dou originally thought she was going to eat by herself, but when she saw her walking out, she asked in confusion, "Xixi, where are you going?"
