Chapter 8 Chang Xixi protects his shortcomings

Big white flour steamed buns, three bowls of peanut porridge with rice visible, and a plate of pickles.

Chang Xixi was so moved that she almost shed tears. She sat down at the table, grabbed the steamed bun and took a bite. It was so delicious.

"Mom, second brother, why don't you eat?"

Dou wanted to say something but stopped herself, as she had a lot to say in her heart.

Seeing that neither of them was eating, Chang Xixi took out the money given by her second uncle from her sleeve while eating the steamed bun, put it on the table, and muttered.

"This is the money given by my second uncle. Mother, use it to supplement the family income."

Dou didn't dare to reach out to take it.

Seeing her hesitation, Chang Xixi said, "Mother, take it first! I'll use the money from the pawned jewelry to improve our family's food. My second brother is sick and can't always eat that gruel that can't even see rice. I haven't eaten any meat for half a month."

Chang Xixi opened the door and saw the villagers outside, their faces illuminated by the torches.

When the village chief saw that the person who came out was Chang Xixi, he spoke directly to the point. Knowing that she had grown up in a large courtyard, he became more polite.

"Miss Chang, I heard that you got engaged to Mr. Gu this morning?"

Chang Xixi sneered. It was true that poor and remote places breed unruly people. "Who is gossiping?"

The village chief smiled and said, "I'm here just to tell you that I approve of your marriage to Gu Rongyu! You should choose a good time and hold the wedding. I'll go prepare the paperwork for you right away."

"That's not true. It's just a rumor spread by the villagers. Sorry to bother the village chief with this trip." Chang Xixi refused outright, walked up to the village chief, and whispered about what happened in the morning. She was just trying to protect him.

It was pitiful to see him alone in that shabby house, his frail body could fall down with a single blow.
