Chapter 8 Chang Xixi protects his shortcomings
When her husband was collecting herbs in the mountains, he accidentally encountered a thunderstorm and was hit to death by a big rock, leaving her and a son to depend on each other.
On weekdays, relying on the help from the villagers, she knew everything that happened in the family and liked to join in the fun, which made her very annoying.
There was no emotion on Gu Rongyu's cold and thin face. He was still pale and thin. He stood there silently, holding a bowl in his hand, which he had washed cleanly.
"Please be kind."
Chang Xixi paused. "He's here to return the bowl again?" Why is this man so polite? He doesn't look like someone from a humble family at all.
When Widow Li heard this, she laughed so hard that she fell backwards. Then she looked at Gu Rongyu, who was even more handsome than that scholar Zhang, and spoke without thinking.
"Hey! You're already protecting someone before you even enter the room?"
Come in?
Chang Xixi felt very uncomfortable when she thought about the shameless words she had said early in the morning.
"Widow Li, you'd better take good care of your son. Don't let him idle around in the village all day. It's better to rent a few acres of land and work on it than wandering around outside." After saying that, she took Gu Rongyu's hand and walked into the courtyard, slamming the door shut to block out the inquiring gazes from outside.
"You shouldn't have come."
Chang Xixi snatched the bowl from his hand and said coldly.
Only then did Dou realize that the benefactor she was talking about was the scholar from the Gu family, and he was indeed a good-looking man.
The second brother was still sitting on the stool peeling corn. He found that his third sister, who grew up in a large courtyard, was different from before.
In the past, not only did she not talk to him, but every time she saw him, she would either make some teasing remarks or look down on him as her second brother with contempt in her eyes.
Now, there is no longer any contempt in his eyes, only heartache.
Thinking about how Chang Xixi got up in the middle of the night to pour water for me a few days ago, my heart warmed.
Gu Rongyu turned around and was about to leave, but Dou grabbed his slender, pale hand. The hand trembled slightly, and he couldn't stop coughing, which seemed to be getting worse.
"do what?"
The cold voice gradually grew weaker, even more listless than the previous few days, and a sinister glint flashed across his black eyes.
Dou was intimidated by this momentum and abruptly withdrew her hand. "You!" She paused, mustering her courage, "Widow Li said that you and Xixi are engaged?"
Chang Xixi was stunned on the spot. There were so many rumors in the small village.
"Mom, it's just a joke, just let him go!"
Before Mrs. Dou could say anything, Gu Rongyu opened the door and staggered out. The Chang family was some distance away from the foot of the mountain east of the village, and Chang Xixi couldn't bear it.
"I'll take you there." Chang Xixi followed Gu Rongyu's steps. The black shadow in the woods in the distance saw this scene and his eyes almost popped out.
The young master has changed!
The black shadow jumped down from the tree and followed the two people to the house at the east end of the village.
Chang Xixi looked at the dilapidated house and thought it was ridiculous that there were still people who wanted to covet it. What she saw was not shabby but desolate.
The person had arrived, and she turned around to leave. When she caught a glimpse of Gu Rongyu's frail body, her heart was filled with pity and heartache for him.
If it was a beggar begging on the street, she would also feel pity for him, not to mention that this person had done her a favor.
I haven't thought about it yet, maybe I can hire some temporary workers to repair the roof and windows tomorrow.
Gu Rongyu then said, "Don't send me food anymore."
How could Chang Xixi possibly listen to him? If she didn't send him off, what would he eat? Could a scholar cook? The last time she came, she discovered that there wasn't even a pot at home.
After people left.
A dark shadow emerged from the woods on one side and flew to Gu Rongyu's side. "Young Master, are we still leaving today? The sun is setting."
"Wait a little longer."
The black shadow pouted in dissatisfaction, entered the dilapidated house, and jumped onto the beam to take a nap.
Chang Xixi returned all the way to the Chang family. The villagers who had greeted her politely before now circled around her and did not come forward to talk to her.
When he saw her, he ran away as if he had seen the plague god.
As the sun was setting, Chang Xixi was still brooding over the incident of being chased by a dog in the middle of the night, so she walked faster and bumped into Zhang Xiucai's arms.
"Who the hell is so blind?"
Chang Xixi looked up and saw Zhang Xiucai's handsome face, which was also filled with anger.
Anyone who dares to argue with him will be forced to leave.
Zhang Xiucai reached out and grabbed Chang Xixi's wrist. Seeing that there was no one around, the villagers who were doing farm work had all returned home, and only the cold wind was blowing across the fields.
"Where are you going? You've only been away from me for a few days, and you're already hooking up with that sickly girl. You're really capable."
"What does this have to do with you?" Chang Xixi pushed Zhang Xiucai's hand away, took a step back, and looked alert. The original owner had no resistance to this man.
"Why are you so far away?"
Chang Xixi glanced at the Chang family and saw a faint candlelight in the yard.
It gets dark so quickly in the mountains. The sun was just hanging on the mountainside, but now it's completely dark. "We're even now. Don't bother me anymore."
Mr. Zhang smiled and said, "You forced me to lose face in front of relatives and neighbors a few days ago. Don't you plan to compensate me?" He pointed to his cheek shamelessly.
Chang Xixi stretched out her hand and hit it. There was a loud snap, which was particularly loud in the dark night.
Woof woof!
A big black dog suddenly appeared from nowhere and barked at the two of them. Chang Xixi was quick to push Zhang Xiucai, and he fell to the ground with a thud.
The black dog pounced directly on Zhang Xiucai and the two of them wrestled with each other. Chang Xixi quickly fled the scene.
Thanks to the familiarity she had gained over the past few days, she walked into the yard in the moonlight. Dou and her second brother were sitting at the table waiting for her. The food on the table was the most food the original owner, Chang Xixi, had ever seen since she returned to this poor home.
