0035 Danger
That day, Jiang Jifan realized it was already very late after finishing her overtime work at the company, and the subway had already closed. Helpless, she had no choice but to take a taxi home.
The driver was a middle-aged woman who was quite talkative. During the short ten-minute ride, we chatted about everything from family and life to work and career.
Jiang Jifan was actually very tired after finishing her work, but out of politeness, she would still respond from time to time to avoid making the other person feel awkward.
"Miss Jiang, why are you back so late?" The security guard at the entrance of the residential area asked her casually when he saw her.
She smiled wearily and said, "Working overtime."
"Oh my, you young people have it tough..." The security guard said in a thick dialect, his brows furrowed and his expression slightly exaggerated.
Jiang Jifan really didn't have the energy to talk to him much, so he just gave him a few perfunctory replies and then went inside.
She was the only one in the elevator. She leaned against the corner, carrying her bag in one hand, trying to relieve her physical fatigue.
Just as the elevator doors were about to close, a figure suddenly walked in.
Jiang Jifan looked up and saw a man dressed in black clothes, black pants, and a matching mask and hat.
She assumed it was someone from the same floor and didn't pay much attention.
However, I was still a little puzzled as to why the other person was wrapped up so tightly in the middle of the night.
When the elevator arrived, she stepped out first.
The motion-activated lights on their floor have been broken for the past few days, but fortunately the lights in the commercial building across the street are still quite bright, casting a faint glow that saves her the trouble of using a flashlight to light her way.
Because it was late at night, the hallway was very quiet, so the footsteps were extremely noticeable.
Jiang Jifan, feeling drowsy, sensed something was wrong. She turned around and saw that the man who had been in the elevator with her was following behind her.
Looking at the man's strange attire, she immediately recalled some news reports from the internet and couldn't help but become wary.
She dared not look any longer, and silently quickened her pace.
The phone on the desk suddenly rang, and Tantai Qing, who was engrossed in her work, picked it up and glanced at it.
Upon seeing the caller ID, his expression softened instantly.
"Jifan, have you gotten home yet?"
"Okay, I'm ready."
For some reason, Tantai Qing felt that she was acting strangely, and even heard a high degree of tension and a slight tremor in her voice.
He immediately sensed something was wrong and asked her, "What's wrong?"
The footsteps behind her grew closer and closer, amplifying Jiang Jifan's fear. Holding up her phone, she hurriedly pulled her keys out of her bag.
Realizing he was about to catch up, she didn't care about anything else. She ran a few steps forward, quickly unlocked the door, and rushed inside.
She was breathing heavily on the phone, as if she were running. Just as Tantai Qing was about to say something, she heard a scream from her, followed by the sound of something falling to the ground.
"Ji Fan!" His heart skipped a beat, and he jumped up from his chair.
Jiang Jifan slumped behind the door, trembling, his expression panicked.
That person almost followed her in, but luckily she acted quickly and blocked him from entering by locking the door.
The sudden danger sent shivers down her spine. Hearing the heavy banging on the door from outside, she mustered her courage, pushed herself up from the ground, kicked the door hard, and shouted a warning: "I've already called the police. Don't you dare leave!"
The knocking stopped abruptly.
After a long while, there was no further sound from outside.
Seeing that the warning had worked, Jiang Jifan breathed a sigh of relief and bent down to pick up the bag and phone that she had just dropped in her haste.
She glanced at her phone; the call screen was still open. She took a deep breath and brushed her messy hair behind her ears.
"Jifan, can you hear me?" came the anxious voice from the phone.
She dragged her weak legs to sit down on the sofa, and remembering the terrifying experience, she propped her forehead up and said in a hoarse voice, "I can hear you."
Hearing her voice, Tantai Qing finally breathed a sigh of relief and immediately asked her what had happened.
Jiang Jifan said that she was being followed, but fortunately she noticed in advance and prevented an accident from happening.
Tantai Qing was terrified after hearing this, and gently comforted her, saying, "Don't be afraid, wait for me at home, I'll come to you now."
Jiang Jifan did not refuse; she genuinely needed someone to comfort her.
Fortunately, the distance wasn't too far. He risked running several red lights and arrived at her house as quickly as possible.
After a long while, there was another knock at the door. Jiang Jifan was startled and, like a frightened bird, immediately stood up and shouted, "Who is it!"
"It's me, Ji Fan."
